Choline is product and precursor to both acetylcholine and membrane phospholipids, and, in the brain, is ultimately provided by the circulation. The brain is protected from excess choline and choline deprivation by a refined system of homeostatic mechanisms that maintain a level of extracellular choline that, for its role as precursor, meets saturation criteria under normal conditions. The kinetic and activity profiles of choline are typical for a biosynthetic precursor.

Visualization of biological membranes by scanning force microscopy (SFM) has tremendously improved the current understanding of protein ‐ lipid interactions under physiological conditions. SFM is the only tool to directly image processes on surfaces in aqueous solution at molecular resolution. Abstract Ternary systems containing phosphatidylcholine-cholesterol, phosphatidylcholine-gramicidin A or cholesterol-gramicidin A in tetrahydrofuran have been examined by high performance liquid chromatography. Preferential solvation of cholesterol and especially gramicidin A by phosphatidylcholine is observed. These results are interpreted in terms of hydrophobic interactions between membrane components.

Abstract FT-IR spectra of urea/lecithin/CCl4 and urea/sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (NaDEHP)/CCl4 systems as a function of the urea-to-surfactant molar ratio (Rurea) at a fixed surfactant concentration (0.1 mol kg−1) have been recorded at 25 °C. Analysis of the absorption spectra leads the to hypothesis that urea is confined within the hydrophilic micellar core of lecithin and NaDEHP reversed micelles. The encapsulation of urea involves some changes of the urea NH stretching band with respect to that of the pure solid urea, attributable to confinement effects. This study was carried out to investigate the influence of the membrane fatty acid composition on the basal electrical and contractile activities and the response to beta-adrenergic stimulation of rat cardiac muscle cells in culture. Cells were grown for 3 days in a conventional serum culture medium and then incubated for 24 h in synthetic media containing either n-6 or n-3 as the sole source of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). The n-6/n-3 ratio in the phospholipids was 0.9 in the n-3 cells and 13.1 in the n-6 cells compared with 6.3 in controls cells. We have investigated the conformation of gramicidin A reconstituted in different phospholipid environments, small unilamellar vesicles, extensive bilayers, and micelles by exploiting a recently proposed experimental approach based on high-performance liquid chromatography [Bano et al.
