Diabetes-related nutrition knowledge and dietary intake among adults with type 2 diabetes.

2015

Nutrition knowledge and skills enable individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) to make food choices that optimise metabolic self-management and quality of life. The present study examined the relationship between nutrition knowledge and skills, and nutrient intake in T2DM. A cross-sectional analysis of diabetes-related nutrition knowledge and nutrient intake was conducted in 124 T2DM individuals managed in usual care (64 % male, age 57·4 (sd 5·6) years, BMI 32·5 (sd 5·8) kg/m2), using the Audit of Diabetes Knowledge (ADKnowl) questionnaire and a 4 d food diary. Data on sociodemographic characteristics, food label use and weight management were also collected. The average ADKnowl dietary subs…

Adiponectin, resistin and leptin in paediatric chronic renal failure: Correlation with auxological and endocrine profiles

2013

Introduction: Chronic renal failure (CRF) compromises nutrition, growth, puberty, glycometabolic homeostasis, and adipokine secretion (i.e. adiponectin, resistin, and leptin). Adipokines play a role in the clinical outcome, but data in paediatric patients is scant. Aim: To evaluate the link between kidney function, adiponectin, resistin, leptin, hormonal status, nutritional state and late outcome of CRF children. Materials and methods: We studied leptin, adiponectin and resistin levels in 31 CRF patients (19 males, 12 females, aged 12.1 ± 4.47 years) managed conservatively, and 30 healthy age- and gender-matched controls. Clinical, auxological, biochemical, hormonal data, glucose and insuli…

The role of morbid obesity in the promotion of metabolic disruptions and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis by Helicobacter Pylori

2016

Background Helicobacter pylory (HP) infection has been associated to an increased rate of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and liver disease through its effect on insulin resistance and systemic inflammation. However, results are inconstant and no studies exist in morbidly obese patients, in which both insulin resistance and inflammation coexist. Material and methods Cross-sectional study to evaluate the relationship between HP infection and alterations in carbohydrate metabolism, lipid profile, inflammation markers, and liver disease in patients awaiting for bariatric surgery. HP infection was histologically assessed in gastric antrum biopsy from 416 subjects. Liver biopsy was also available in 93 su…

Time course of changes in serum oxidant/antioxidant status in overfed obese rats and their offspring.

2009

The aim of the present study was to determine the time course of changes in oxidant/antioxidant status, as well as serum glucose, insulin, leptin and lipid levels, liver adipose tissue and muscle lipid and protein contents, in cafeteria-diet-fed dams during gestation and lactation, and in their offspring throughout adulthood. Food intake was also evaluated. The cafeteria diet induced a significant increase in maternal body and relative adipose tissue weights, daily energy intake, and plasma glucose, insulin, leptin and lipid levels at parturition (day 0) and at the end of lactation (day 21). Plasma total antioxidant status [ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity)], erythrocyte catalase an…

Metabolomic analysis of long-term spontaneous exercise in mice suggests increased lipolysis and altered glucose metabolism when animals are at rest

2014

Exercise has been associated with several beneficial effects and is one of the major modulators of metabolism. The working muscle produces and releases substances during exercise that mediate the adaptation of the muscle but also improve the metabolic flexibility of the complete organism, leading to adjustable substrate utilization. Metabolomic studies on physical exercise are scarce and most of them have been focused on the effects of intense exercise in professional sportsmen. The aim of our study was to determine plasma metabolomic adaptations in mice after a long-term spontaneous exercise intervention study (18 mo). The metabolic changes induced by long-term spontaneous exercise were su…

A novel flash glucose monitoring system in patients with diabetes mellitus type 1 and 2: which are the pieces of evidence for payer decision-makers?

2018

A rigorous health technology assessment is necessary to evaluate a new technology. However, healthcare regulatory agencies have less restrictive rules about medical devices, despite some recent warnings about this relevant matter. The evaluation should have at least two key issues, which require attention. The first one is its effectiveness, and the second one is its economic sustainability. In this paper, we deal with a novel glucose-sensing technology as a case study to examine the matter in depth. An evidence-based point of view is used to highlight this important issue.

Plasma corticosteroids, free fatty acids, insulin and glucose in maternal blood during delivery.

1970

Plasma-corticosteroids (PCS), free fatty acids (FFA), insulin and glucose were determined continously in maternal blood during the entire course of delivery, from the first stage of labour until 6 hours after delivery. A steep increase in the PCS and FFA concentration could be noticed from the onset of labour (PCS: 37,8±11.2 µg/100 ml;\(s_{\bar x} \),p≦0.01; FFA: 556±106.6 µVal/l;\(s_{\bar x} \),p≦0.01) to the birth of the child (PCS: 96.8±19,5 µg/100 ml;\(s_{\bar x} \),p≦0.01; FFA: 1129±220 µVal/l;\(s_{\bar x} \),p≦0.01) and basal levels were already reached 6 hours later (PCS: 36.0±18.5 µg/100 ml;\(s_{\bar x} \),p≦0.01; FFA: 538±192.8 µVal/l;\(s_{\bar x} \),p≦0.01). Altered adipose tissue metabolism in offspring of dietary obese rat dams.

2011

To investigate further the mechanisms of developmental programming, we analysed the effects of maternal overnutrition and of postnatal high-fat feeding on adipose tissue metabolism in the offspring. Postnatal changes in serum adiponectin, leptin and TAG [triacylglycerol (triglyceride)] levels, adipose tissue TAGs, fatty acids and enzyme activities were determined in offspring of cafeteria-diet-fed dams during gestation and lactation, weaned on to standard chow or on to cafeteria diet. Obese rats showed higher adiposity (+35% to 85%) as well as a significant increase in serum glucose, insulin, leptin, adiponectin and TAG levels (P<0.01) and adipose tissue LPL (lipoprotein lipase) and …

Native, Intact Glucagon-Like Peptide 1 Is a Natural Suppressor of Thrombus Growth Under Physiological Flow Conditions

2020

Objective: In patients with diabetes mellitus, increased platelet reactivity predicts cardiac events. Limited evidence suggests that DPP-4 (dipeptidyl peptidase 4) influences platelets via GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide 1)-dependent effects. Because DPP-4 inhibitors are frequently used in diabetes mellitus to improve the GLP-1-regulated glucose metabolism, we characterized the role of DPP-4 inhibition and of native intact versus DPP-4-cleaved GLP-1 on flow-dependent thrombus formation in mouse and human blood. Approach and Results: An ex vivo whole blood microfluidics model was applied to approach in vivo thrombosis and study collagen-dependent platelet adhesion, activation, and thrombus for…

Oxidant stress: the role of nutrients in cell-lipoprotein interactions

1999

Oxidant stress is increasingly becoming an important hypothesis to explain the genesis of several pathologies, including cancer, atherosclerosis and also ageing. Beside a few rare genetic defects, dietary factors are thought to play a key role in the regulation of the production of reactive oxygenated species. An imbalance between nutrients, and in particular those involved in antioxidant status, could explain the onset of an enhanced production of free radicals. We will briefly review information concerning oxidation of lipids and lipoproteins which lead to atherothrombosis. We also present new findings supporting a role for blood platelets in generating oxidant species. New data are also …
