The time course of the repetitive impulse discharges has been investigated for two high intensities of maintained depolarizing currents, 30 nA and 50 nA, for which the receptor adaptation was complete within 70 msec. Yeast mRNA cap-binding protein Cbc1/Sto1 is necessary for the rapid reprogramming of translation after hyperosmotic shock.

Global translation is inhibited in Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells under osmotic stress; nonetheless, osmostress-protective proteins are synthesized. We found that translation mediated by the mRNA cap-binding protein Cbc1 is stress-resistant and necessary for the rapid translation of osmostress-protective proteins under osmotic stress.

Marine sponges (Porifera) are producers of the largest variety of bioactive compounds among benthic marine organisms. In vitro culture of marine sponge cells has been proposed for the sustainable production of these pharmacologically interesting compounds from marine sponges but with limited success. The development of a suitable growth medium is an essential prerequisite for sponge cells grown in vitro. Adenine auxotrophy--be aware: some effects of adenine auxotrophy in Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain W303-1A.

Adenine auxotrophy is a commonly used genetic marker in haploid yeast strains. Strain W303-1A, which carries the ade2-1 mutation, is widely used in physiological and genetic research. Yeast extract-based rich medium contains a low level of adenine, so that adenine is often depleted before glucose. This could affect the cell physiology of adenine auxotrophs grown in rich medium. The aim of our study was to assess the effects of adenine auxotrophy on cell morphology and stress physiology. Pharmacological inhibitors are frequently used to identify the receptors, receptor subtypes, and associated signaling pathways involved in physiological cell responses. Based on the effects of such inhibitors conclusions are drawn about the involvement of their assumed target or lack thereof. Cellular physiology of the neonatal rat cerebral cortex.

The early development of the cerebral cortex is characterized by neurogenesis, neuronal migration, cellular differentiation and programmed cell death. Cajal-Retzius cells, developing cortical plate neurons and subplate cells form a transient synaptic circuit which may serve as a template for the formation of cortical layers and columns. These three neuronal cell types show distinct electrophysiological properties and synaptic inputs. Endogenous or exogenous harmful disturbances during this developmental period may lead to the preservation of early cortical circuits, which may act as trigger zones for the initiation of pathophysiological activity.

Interplay of oxidants and antioxidants during exercise: Implications for muscle health

Muscle contraction results in generation of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) at a rate determined by the intensity, frequency, and duration of the exercise protocols. Strenuous exercise causes oxidation of protein, lipid, and DNA, release of cytosolic enzymes, and other signs of cell damage; however, only exhaustive exercise is detrimental. Indeed, the regulation of vascular tone, the excitation-contraction coupling, growth, and differentiation in skeletal muscle, are governed in part by RONS.
