The advent of endoscopic resection (ER) techniques has enabled gastroenterologists to remove premalignant or neoplastic lesions throughout the gastrointestinal tract. This review discusses the indications and the several techniques of ER in early carcinomas of the esophagus and stomach. Before ER is performed an accurate evaluation of patients and careful staging of lesions is mandatory. After ER of the neoplasia histological assessment of the entire specimen with detailed histological analysis of layer infiltration is crucial. Genetic effects in common on maximal walking speed and muscle performance in older women

The purpose was to examine whether maximal walking speed, maximal isometric knee extensor strength, and leg extensor power share genetic or environmental effects in common. The data was collected from 103 monozygotic and 114 dizygotic female twin pairs aged 63–76 years. Maximal walking speed over 10 m was measured in the laboratory corridor using photocells for timing. Isometric knee extensor strength and leg extensor power were measured using an adjustable dynamometer. The genetic models showed that strength, power, and walking speed had a genetic effect in common which accounted for 52% of the variance in strength, 36% in power, and 34% in walking speed. Pharmacogenomics in psychiatry: from therapeutic drug monitoring to genomic medicine.

Psychiatry is increasingly combining new pharmacogenomic findings with therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) to improve the safety and efficacy of pharmacotherapy. However, a distinction should be made between “nice to know” and “need to know” pharmacogenomic data because many results are statistically significant in meta-analyses but are not clinically relevant due to their low effect sizes. Some examples will illustrate this integration.

A double-blind, placebo-controlled, gluten challenge has been proposed to confirm a diagnosis of non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) in patients without celiac disease who respond to a gluten-free diet. To determine the accuracy of this approach, we analyzed data from 10 double-blind, placebo-controlled, gluten challenge trials, comprising 1312 adults. Cloning of two melanocortin (MC) receptors in spiny dogfish

We report the cloning and characterization of two melanocortin receptors (MCRs) from the spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias) (Sac). Phylogenetic analysis shows that these shark receptors are orthologues of the MC3R and MC5R subtypes, sharing 65% and 70% overall amino acid identity with the human counterparts, respectively. The SacMC3R was expressed and pharmacologically characterized in HEK293 cells. Patients with soft tissue sarcoma (STS) experienced better outcomes when treated according to existing clinical practice guidelines either at reference institution or dedicated treatment networks. 1. The effects of GABA on release of acetylcholine and on contractility of the smooth muscle were studied in the myenteric plexus-longitudinal muscle preparation of the guinea pig. Acetylcholine was determined as radiolabelled transmitter from strips preloaded with 3H-choline. 2. GABA (1–300 μM) caused an increase in resting tension of smooth muscle as well as an increase in release of acetylcholine that was considerably reduced by tetrodotoxin. The facilitation by GABA of acetylcholine release exhibited a marked tachyphylaxis. The increase in muscle tension was clearly related to the increase in acetylcholine release.
