Maladaptive music listening strategies are modulated by individual traits
2022
Music listening is a great resource for mental well-being, pleasure, and self-regulation, but it may also be maladaptive. Depression, for instance, has been shown to relate to music use that is characterized by rumination, avoidance, and mood worsening. However, we know little of the role of individual differences in such maladaptive music use. Hence, this study focused on examining the role of personality, empathic traits, emotional contagion, and the types of musical reward as predictors of maladaptive music listening. Participants ( N = 318) answered an online survey comprising measures for the abovementioned traits in addition to the Healthy-Unhealthy Music Scale (HUMS) as a measure of…
Ikääntyneiden ihmisten elinpiirin laajuuden yhteys masennusoireisiin
2013
Masennus on ikääntyneiden ihmisten yleisin psyykkinen häiriö. Masennukseen yhteydessä olevia tekijöitä on tutkittu paljon, mutta tutkimus on keskittynyt enemmän ikääntyvään yksilöön, kun taas ympäristön merkityksen tarkastelu on jäänyt vähemmälle. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää, onko elinpiirin laajuudella yhteyttä ikääntyneiden ihmisten masennusoireisiin ja selittääkö liikkumiskyky, fyysinen aktiivisuus, sairauksien lukumäärä ja kodin ulkopuoliseen harrastustoimintaan osallistuminen tätä yhteyttä. Tutkimuksen aineistona käytettiin iäkkäiden ihmisten liikkumiskykyä ja elinpiiriä tutkivan ”Life-Space Mobility in Old Age” (LISPE) tutkimushankkeen aineistoa. Tutkimukseen osallistui 84…
Personality Traits and Changes in Health Behaviors and Depressive Symptoms during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Longitudinal Analysis from Pre-pandemic to…
2021
The COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing measures targeting the transmission of the virus impacted everyday life in 2020. This study investigated pre- to in-pandemic changes in health behaviors and depressive symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic and the role of personality traits in these changes in Finland. Data from a larger population-based cohort study of 51–59-year-old Finnish women were used (n = 358). Self-reported questionnaires gathered information about depressive symptoms, eating behavior, physical activity, and alcohol consumption before the pandemic time, at the onset, and at the end of the COVID-19 emergency conditions. Information about personality traits (extraversion an…

Comparison of antiplatelet effects of aspirin, ticlopidine, or their combination after stent implantation.
1998
Background —This study was performed to analyze the influence of either aspirin, ticlopidine, or their combination on platelet activation and aggregation parameters after stent implantation. Methods and Results —Sixty-one patients with successful implantation of a single Palmaz-Schatz stent in a native coronary artery were randomly assigned to either group A (aspirin 300 mg/d+ticlopidine 2×250 mg/d), group B (ticlopidine 2×250 mg/d), or group C (aspirin 300 mg/d). Platelet activation was evaluated on days 1, 7, and 14 by flow cytometry measurement of expression of CD62p (p-selectin) and the binding of fibrinogen to the platelet surface glycoprotein IIb/IIIa receptor. Platelet aggregation w…
The role and presence of conflicts in romantic Erasmus relationships
2017
The present study assesses the presence and importance of conflicts in intercultural relationships that were created during an Erasmus exchange period abroad. The theoretical background is based upon the concepts of third culture building (TCB) and conflict management styles, both of which were used to explain the various stages of the relationship development. So far the scholarly literature on the subject of Erasmus students is rather scarce and only a few studies focus on intercultural couples’ lived experiences concerning conflicts. This study is driven by the need for more developed and valid information of Erasmus couples that in fact form a rather large number of the Erasmus students…

Personality, motivational, and social cognition predictors of leisure-time physical activity
2022
Objective The purpose of the present study was to investigate associations between personality traits of extraversion and neuroticism, autonomous motivation, and the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) constructs and leisure-time physical activity. The study examined whether autonomous motivation and the TPB constructs mediate the association between personality traits and physical activity, and whether personality traits moderate the relationship of autonomous motivation and the TPB constructs with physical activity. Methods Middle-aged women (N = 441) completed self-report measures of personality traits, autonomous motivation, attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control (PBC) a…
Testing the need for novelty as a candidate need in basic psychological needs theory
2020
The purpose of this research was to test novelty as a candidate basic psychological need according to the inclusion criteria established within basic psychological needs theory (BPNT). Two cross-sectional studies with 303 (Mage = 33.50, SD = 12.95; 58.41% female) and 598 (Mage = 35.47, SD = 11.89; 54.18% female) Spanish adults were conducted in physical exercise and general life contexts with the following aims: (1) to analyze relations between novelty satisfaction/frustration and well-being outcomes; (2) to examine the mediating role of motivation (autonomous, controlled, and amotivation) in these relations; and (3) to study whether these associations held regardless of the importance part…
