Optimal positioning of patients for spine surgery is crucial for ideal surgical conditions and operative-site exposure. During surgery of the spine patients are placed in non-physiological conditions already in anesthesia which lead to complications as patients are not able react to an unpleasant tissue damaging position. The factors duration of a surgical procedure, mechanical pressure and immobility increase the risk for positioning related complications and rare complications such as postoperative visual loss (POVL) or perioperative peripheral nerve injury (PPNI) result in significant patient disability and functional restrictions.

The present study tests the effects of glucose and choline, the biosynthetic precursors of acetylcholine, on passive avoidance behaviour and hippocampal acetylcholine release measured by microdialysis in awake mice. Glucose (10 and 30mg/kg) or choline chloride (6-60mg/kg), given by i.p. injection immediately after training, dose-dependently enhanced retention in an inhibitory avoidance task. Combinations of low doses of glucose (10mg/kg) and choline chloride (20mg/kg) which alone were submaximally effective significantly increased retention latencies in a synergistic manner, an effect which was sensitive to atropine (0.5mg/kg). 1. Isolated rabbit hearts were perfused with (−)-noradrenaline, (−)-adrenaline and (±)-isoprenaline for various time periods (1–180 min) and then washed with an amine-free medium. The venous concentration of the amine was estimated fluorimetrically during the infusion and after its end, to study removal and efflux, respectively. 2. In untreated hearts and after pretreatment with reserpine the removal had a constant rate over 20–60 min. Rabbit hearts were isolated after pretreatment with the MAO inhibitor pargyline and with reserpine and were perfused with 200 ng/ml noradrenaline for 1 h. During the subsequent wash-out with an amine-free solution for 2 h, the neuronal efflux of noradrenaline declined mono-exponentially with a mean halftime of 42 min. Both Na+-free solution and ouabain caused facilitation of the efflux which thereafter declined in a multi-exponential fashion. The maximum facilitation was reached after 3 min of Na+-free perfusion and 25 min after introduction of ouabain. The isolated heart of the rabbit with the sympathetic nervous supply from the right stellate ganglion intact was set up according to Hukovio and Muscholl. The ganglion was stimulated for 30 s at supramaximal voltage with rectangular impulses of 3–5 ms duration a frequency of 10 shocks/s. Each stimulation period was followed by a resting period of 30 s. In the rabbit, four doses of 50 mg/kg l-α-methyldopa decreased the noradrenaline concentration in auricles, right, and left ventricles by 38–60%. Abstract In this work, the accuracy of the implementation of the Macro Monte Carlo electron dose calculation algorithm into the radiation therapy treatment planning system Eclipse is evaluated. This implementation – called eMC – uses a particle source based on the Rotterdam Initial Phase-Space model. 1. Adult, female rats were treated orally for 23 days with 1.6 mg/kg haloperidol or 36 mg/kg clozapine per day, to study chronic effects of the two neuroleptics. 2. At five time points during the neuroleptic treatment, animal behavior was recorded in an open field and locomotive activity was analysed. At the end of the experiment, rats were decapitated, blood samples were collected and serum concentrations of haloperidol and clozapine were determined by a radioreceptor or HPLC assay, respectively.
