New antifungals selected by molecular topology.
1999
Abstract Molecular topology has been applied to find the new lead antimycotic compounds. Among the selected compounds stands out 3,3′-(4,4′ - Biphenylene)bis(2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium chloride), Benztropine mesylate and Dicyclopentamethylenethiuram disulphide, with minimum inhibitory concentrations between 1.6 and 2 μg / mL.
Toxicological and bioactivity evaluation of blackcurrant press cake, sea buckthorn leaves and bark from Scots pine and Norway spruce extracts under a…
2021
Aqueous extracts from blackcurrant press cake (BC), Norway spruce bark (NS), Scots pine bark (SP), and sea buckthorn leaves (SB) were obtained using maceration and pressurized hot water and tested for their bioactivities. Maceration provided the extraction of higher dry matter contents, including total phenolics (TPC), anthocyanins, and condensed tannins, which also impacted higher antioxidant activity. NS and SB extracts presented the highest mean values of TPC and antioxidant activity. Individually, NS extract presented high contents of proanthocyanidins, resveratrol, and some phenolic acids. In contrast, SB contained a high concentration of ellagitannins, ellagic acid, and quercetin, exp…
Optimization of the sorption process of copper cations from aqueous solution by pine bark (Pinus sylvestris)
2020
This study examined the effect of the chemical modification of pine bark (Pinus sylvestris) on the sorption efficiency of copper cations. The results were interpreted using pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order reaction models as well as Langmuir and Freundlich isothermal models. The sorption experiments were carried out using the batch technique. The study indicated the effect of the competitive sorption of copper cations and hydrogen cations as well as the adverse effect on the sorption efficiency of copper hydroxides formed under alkaline conditions. The need to assess the measurement uncertainty in determining the basic parameters of the sorption process was indicated. It was also …
Targeted rescue of synaptic plasticity improves cognitive decline after severe systemic inflammation
2021
AbstractSepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is a frequent complication in patients with severe systemic infection resulting in acute brain dysfunction and incapacitating long-term sequelae. SAE includes delirium, premature death, post-traumatic stress disorder, and major long-term cognitive impairment. The underlying pathophysiology of SAE is largely unresolved and specific treatment options are missing. We induced the peritoneal contamination and infection (PCI) sepsis model in 769 mice and compared these with 259 control mice. We found that experimental sepsis causes synaptic pathology in the brain characterized by severely disordered synaptic plasticity with reduced long-term potentia…
The Jura glaciers: palaeogeography in the Würmian circum-Alpine zone
2008
Since the first studies on the glacial formations of the Jura mountains there have been two concepts concerning type of glaciation and ice origin during the Wurmian glaciation. Some authors believed that the Jura was totally inundated by ice of Alpine origin, while others believed that the Jura had its own glaciers, originating from a single ice-cap. Several recent studies on both the NW and SE slopes of the range define the problem more accurately. This paper presents a synthesis of the new results from mapping the moraine systems and studying the stratigraphic relationships between Alpine and Jura tills. It is concluded that even the highest level of Alpine glaciers could not lead to a pe…
Adaptive Lung Ventilation (ALV) Evaluierung eines neuen closed loop-gesteuerten Beatmungsalgorithmus bei Eingriffen in berstreckter Seitenlage
1996
The lateral decubitus position is the standard position for nephrectomies. There is a lack of data about the effects of this extreme position upon respiratory mechanics and gas exchange. In 20 patients undergoing surgery in the nephrectomy position, we compared a new closed-loop-controlled ventilation algorithm, adaptive lung ventilation (ALV), which adapts the breathing pattern automatically, to the respiratory mechanics with conventionally controlled mandatory ventilation (CMV). The aims of our study were (1) to describe positioning effects on respiratory mechanics and gas exchange, (2) to compare ventilatory parameters selected by the ALV controller with traditional settings of CMV, and …

Abstract. This paper describes the background, instrumentation, goals, and the regional influences on the HUMPPA-COPEC intensive field measurement campaign, conducted at the Boreal forest research station SMEAR II (Station for Measuring Ecosystem-Atmosphere Relation) in Hyytiälä, Finland from 12 July–12 August 2010. The prevailing meteorological conditions during the campaign are examined and contrasted with those of the past six years. Back trajectory analyses show that meteorological conditions at the site in 2010 were characterized by a higher proportion of southerly flow than in the other years studied. As a result the summer of 2010 was anomalously warm and high in ozone making the cam…

Abstract. Filter samples of fine and coarse air particulate matter (PM) collected over a period of one year in central Europe (Mainz, Germany) were analyzed for water-soluble organic compounds (WSOCs), including the α- and β-pinene oxidation products pinic acid, pinonic acid and 3-methyl-1,2,3-butanetricarboxylic acid (3-MBTCA), as well as a variety of dicarboxylic acids and nitrophenols. Seasonal variations and other characteristic features in fine, coarse, and total PM (TSP) are discussed with regard to aerosol sources and sinks in comparison to data from other studies and regions. The ratios of adipic acid and phthalic acid to azelaic acid indicate that the investigated aerosol samples w…
Synthesis and characterisation of peroxypinic acids as proxies for highly oxygenated molecules (HOMs) in secondary organic aerosol
2018
Abstract. Peroxy acids were recently found to be involved in new particle formation in the atmosphere and could also substantially contribute towards particle toxicity. However, a lack of suitable analytical methods for the detection and characterisation of peroxy acids in the particle phase is currently hindering the quantitative investigation of their contribution to these important atmospheric processes. Further development of appropriate techniques and relevant standards is therefore urgently needed. In this study, we synthesised three peroxypinic acids, developed a liquid chromatography separation method and characterised them with tandem mass spectrometry. The observed fragmentation p…
