Reliability of Frail and Barthel Tests for Detecting Frailty in Palliative Oncological Patients in a Home Hospitalization Unit: A Comparative Study.

2022

Cancer is a condition that can increase the risk of frailty. In addition, palliative oncological patients in home hospitalization can find their activities of daily living affected. The main objective was to measure the degree of frailty in the oncological population in home hospitalization comparing Barthel and Frail-VIG Indexes. This is a descriptive cross-sectional study. A sample of oncological patients in home hospitalization (n = 50) that included 27 men and 23 women were recruited, and disability due to frailty was measured using the VIG frailty index and the Barthel scale for Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). Spearman’s correlation coefficients were categorized as weak (rs &l…

The Palliative Care in the Metastatic Spinal Tumors. A Systematic Review on the Radiotherapy and Surgical Perspective

2022

Spine represents the most common site for metastatic disease involvement. Due to the close relationship between the spinal cord and critical structures, therapeutic management of spinal metastases remains challenging. Spinal localization can lead to neurological sequelae, which can significantly affect the quality of life in patients with a limited life expectancy. The authors conducted a systematic literature review according to PRISMA guidelines in order to determine the impact of the most updated palliative care on spinal metastases. The initial literature search retrieved 2526 articles, manually screened based on detailed exclusion criteria. Finally, 65 studies met the inclusion criteri…

Gravity-derived Moho map for Latvia

2020

A precise understanding of crustal structure is essential to the fields of geodynamics, seismology and certain branches of geophysics. A boundary between the crust and the mantle is known as the MohoroviÄiÄ discontinuity, simply referred to as the âMohoâ. Moho geometry and depth have been extensively studied in Europe, but there are still regions with little information about it. One such area is the northern Baltics, Latvia in particular. So far, only one seismic refraction profile, spanning from Sovetsk (Kaliningrad) to Kohtla-Järve (Estonia), has been used to study the deep structure of the Earth in Latvia. We propose gravity inversion (ParkerâOldenburg algorithm) to gain more insight i…

STATBOX Concept for Simulation of Urban Phenomena

2013

Abstract An urban environment is a dynamic system which is constantly changing in terms of space and time. There are two dimensions in any urban environment – the physical dimension and the functional dimension. All of the structures of an urban environment interact and people are the intermediaries in this process. The spatial structure of cities has been studied from various perspectives by architects, urban planners, environmental scientists, economists, geographers etc. Constant monitoring that is based on remote sensing, spatial statistics, simulation etc., is needed to make on going note of transformation in the various types of land use that exist, movement of people and business env…

Du « socialisme de cœur » zolien, ou comment être considéré en même temps comme « socialiste » et « ennemi du peuple »

2020

When Germinal was published in 1885, the critic classified Zola as a “socialist” writer. The author himself used this adjective many times referring to his work. At the same time, he didn’t know Marxism and was a resolute opponent to revolution, equality and the government by the people. The paper aims to explain some aspects of Zola’s “socialism” taking into account his origins, his youth experiences and the evolution of his works. This might help to understand the particular meaning done to the term by the writer. Suite à la publication de Germinal en 1885, la critique a classé Zola comme un écrivain « socialiste ». Le romancier lui-même a utilisé ce qualificatif plusieurs fois en parlant…

Gender differences in theory-based predictors of physical activity in university students with disabilities

2021

Abstract University students with disabilities engage in physical activity to a lesser extent than their able-bodied peers, with women reporting less physical activity than men. The present study aimed to examine gender differences in theory-based predictors of physical activity in this population. Spanish university students with different disabilities (n = 1076) completed measures of the Theory of Planned Behaviour constructs and the reduced Spanish version of the Barriers to Physical Activity Questionnaire for People with Mobility Impairments. Self-efficacy and controllability were significantly lower in women and gender differences on the barriers predicting controllability were obtaine…

The changes from the Bologna Process, focus…

A planetary well-being accounting system for organizations

2024

Transformative changes in the operations of humankind are needed to support the transition towards planetary well-being. We humans organize our everyday lives through organizations. We argue that to understand the role of organizations and to facilitate the transition towards planetary well-being, we need a value-transforming integration of financial and environmental accounting and reporting. We find such integration critical to ensuring that the senior executives of organizations pay attention, and to ensuring that environmental impacts begin to influence the management decisions of the organizations. In this chapter we discuss how and why environmental accounting can and should be integr…

Ontological differences and the pursuit of planetary well-being

2024

This chapter emphasizes the importance of ontological dialogue and methodological choices to the conceptual development and practical enactment of planetary well-being. Starting from the premise that cultural practices, including scientific concepts and methods, shape realities, the chapter suggests approaching nature and culture as entangled with each other. From this perspective, this chapter deals with divergent biocultural realities rather than a single, universal Nature viewed from multiple cultural perspectives. Biocultural realities differ in terms of how well they enable more-than-human communities to regenerate themselves. The chapter proposes anthropologist Anna Tsing’s conceptual…
