La timpanoplastica aperta: indicazioni e nostri risultati a distanza
2010
Tinnitus: a vision for research
2009
Tinnitus is classically defined as the perception of sound that has no external source. It was assumed to be primarily a disorder of the ear and has been linked to mechanisms equivalent to phantom pain; a pain sensation located to a no longer existing part of the body. Phantom pain is closely correlated with a cortical plasticity and with a reorganization of the somatosensory cortex. The end result is an alteration of neuronal activity, leading to tinnitus. Over the past decade, however, research on brain mechanisms of tinnitus has progressed rapidly, and insights have emerged into the possible neurological origins of tinnitus without any auditory dysfunction. Identification of the neurosci…

Weak forms of shakedown for elastic-plastic structures exhibiting ductile damage
2001
A special weak-form shakedown is studied for elastic-plastic internal-variable material models with nonlinear hardening, damageable elastic moduli and damageable yield surface, in the hypothesis of ductile damage, (i.e. damage induced by plastic strains), but the precise evolutive law of damage being left unspecified. Sufficient weak-form shakedown theorems are presented, one static and another kinematic, each assessing whether eventually plastic deformations cease together with their consequences, including ductile damage. A two-sided delimitation is provided, within which the weak-form shakedown safety factor can be located. An upper bound to the post-transient damage for a particular iso…
Automatic differentiation of melanoma from dysplastic nevi.
2015
International audience; Malignant melanoma causes the majority of deaths related to skin cancer. Nevertheless, it is the most treatable one, depending on its early diagnosis. The early prognosis is a challenging task for both clinicians and dermatologist, due to the characteristic similarities of melanoma with other skin lesions such as dysplastic nevi. In the past decades, several computerized lesion analysis algorithms have been proposed by the research community for detection of melanoma. These algorithms mostly focus on differentiating melanoma from benign lesions and few have considered the case of melanoma against dysplastic nevi. In this paper, we consider the most challenging task a…
SHORT-TERM SYNAPTIC PLASTICITY IN MIGRAINE MOTOR CORTEX: EVIDENCE BY PRECONDITIONING OF HIGH-FREQUENCY REPETITIVE TRANSCRANIAL MAGNETIC STIMULATION (…
2011
Background: Brief 5Hz repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) trains at 120% of the resting- motorthreshold (RMT) intensity determine in healthy subjects a potentiation of motor evoked potentials (MEPs), likely due to short-term presynaptic plasticity facilitation. We recently showed paradoxical intensity-dependent MEP changes to 5Hz rTMS in migraine with MEP facilitation at 110% and inhibition at 130% RMT. This provides evidence of both hyper-responsivity and self-limiting hyperexcitability capacity in migraine, likely due to earlier activation of inhibitory homeostatic plasticity mechanisms. To explore this, we applied in migraineurs cathodal transcranial Direct Current Stimul…
Maschere e imagerie teatrale nella necropoli liparese di IV-III sec. a.C.: oggetti e immagini in contesto
2019
A new contextual analysis is proposed in order to reappraise the well known theatrical images from Lipari. In the wake of the researches made by L. Bernabò Brea and M. Cavalier, the clay masks of comic, satyric and tragic characters and figurines, on one hand, and the “theatrical” vases on the other were reputed to echo or to “illustrate” Greek plays, in the frame of a Dionysian cult. Lastly, A. Schwarzmaier reviewed this thesis, pointing at the ritual context in which the masks were used and deposed in a set of drinking and pouring vases near the grave during the burial, and concluding that they were a visual clue of a Dionysian funerary banquet. Examining again the whole evidence (masks,…
The synthesis and condensation of oligo(phenylenevinylene)s with alkoxysilyl end groups
2002
Monodisperse alkoxylated oligo(phenylenevinylene)s with 3, 4, or 5 benzene rings were connected to reactive di- and triethoxysilanes, either directly or via flexible spacers. Aminopropylsilanes were condensed with stilbenoid aldehydes and subsequently reduced to amines, for the direct, rigid connection, the Heck reaction and also cross-metathesis with vinyl silanes proved to be successful routes. Hydrolysis of the ethoxysilanes leads to polymerisable cyclosiloxanes or curable three-dimensional networks with pendent chromophores.
