Efficient removal of bisphenol A from wastewaters: Catalytic wet air oxidation with Pt catalysts supported on Ce and Ce–Ti mixed oxides

Catalytic wet air oxidation (CWAO) of an aqueous solution of bisphenol A (BPA) was investigated at 160 ℃ and 2.0 MPa of air in a batch reactor. Activity of supported platinum catalysts (2.5 wt%), prepared by wet impregnation, was compared with pure cerium and cerium–titanium oxide catalysts. Supported platinum catalysts showed higher activities in the removal of BPA than pure CeO2, Ce0.8Ti0.2O2 and Ce0.2Ti0.8O2. The oxidation reaction was followed the pseudo-first order rate law and the highest BPA removal, 97% and 95%, was achieved with Pt/CeO2 and Pt/Ce0.8Ti0.2O2 catalysts respectively. Abstract The mutagenicity and cytotoxicity of cis -diamminedichloroplatinum (II) (cisplatin) at doses of 5, 10 and 20 μg/ml in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells have been examined. A morphological characterization of several cell types induced by cisplatin was carried out. The frequencies of both cells with micronuclei and binucleate cells as a time-dependent parameter have also been studied. Whilst the number of cells with micronuclei was found to decrease with time, the number of binucleate cells increased. Saponins-mediated potentiation of cisplatin accumulation and cytotoxicity in human colon cancer cells.

The triterpene saponins jenisseensosides A, B, C, D were found to increase the accumulation and cytotoxicity of the anticancer agent cisplatin in human colon tumor cells. These compounds are glycosides of quillaic acid whose fucose residue was acylated by a trans- or cis-p methoxycinnamic acid. In contrarst, other saponins derivatives without this acyl moiety were not found to potentiate the accumulation and cytotoxicity of cisplatin. These results suggested the importance of the acyl moiety for activity.

The major obstacle of successful tumor treatment with carboplatin (CBP) is the development of drug resistance. In the present study, we found that following treatment with CBP the amount of platinum which enters the human laryngeal carcinoma (HEp2)-derived CBP- resistant (7T) cells is reduced relative to the parental HEp2. Platinum-doped CeO2 thin film catalysts prepared by magnetron sputtering.

The interaction of Pt with CeO(2) layers was investigated by using photoelectron spectroscopy. The 30 nm thick Pt doped CeO(2) layers were deposited simultaneously by rf-magnetron sputtering on a Si(001) substrate, multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) supported by a carbon diffusion layer of a polymer membrane fuel cell and on CNTs grown on the silicon wafer by the CVD technique. The synchrotron radiation X-ray photoelectron spectra showed the formation of cerium oxide with completely ionized Pt(2+,4+) species, and with the Pt(2+)/Pt(4+) ratio strongly dependent on the substrate. The TEM and XRD study showed the Pt(2+)/Pt(4+) ratio is dependent on the film structure.

Abstract Platinum is the mostly used element in catalysts for fuel cell technology, but its high price limits large-scale applications. Platinum doped cerium oxide represents an alternative solution due to very low loading, typically few micrograms per 1 cm2, at the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) anode. High efficiency is achieved by using magnetron sputtering deposition of cerium oxide and Pt of 30 nm thick nanoporous films on large surface carbon nanoparticle substrates. Abstract The elevated price of Pt limits the large-scale implementation of commercial proton exchange membrane fuel cells, which effectively convert chemical energy into electricity. In order to increase the cost-efficiency in proton-exchange membrane fuel cells, we have designed a family of novel anode catalysts consisting of thin films of ceria with low Pt loadings sputtered on a nanostructured carbon support. Remarkably, only such small amounts of Pt are necessary for achieving power density values comparable to the reference commercial catalysts, which results in excellent specific activities of our samples.
