Nanoparticulate Systems for Drug Delivery and Targeting to the Central Nervous System
2010
Brain delivery is one of the major challenges for the neuropharmaceutical industry since an alarming increase in brain disease incidence is going on. Despite major advances in neuroscience, many potential therapeutic agents are denied access to the central nervous system (CNS) because of the existence of a physiological low permeable barrier, the blood-brain barrier (BBB). To obtain an improvement of drug CNS performance, sophisticated approaches such as nanoparticulate systems are rapidly developing. Many recent data demonstrate that drugs could be transported successfully into the brain using colloidal systems after i.v. injection by several mechanisms such as endocytosis or P-glycoprotei…
Effect of C/N shock variation on the performances of a moving bed membrane bioreactor.
2015
Abstract The effect of a sharp variation of C/N ratio in a moving bed membrane bioreactor (MB-MBR) pilot plant treating high strength wastewater has been investigated. The experimental campaign was divided into two periods, each characterized by a different C/N ratio (namely, 2.5 and 15, Period 1 and Period 2, respectively). The MB-MBR system was analyzed in terms of organic carbon removal, nitrification efficiency, biokinetic activity and fouling behavior. The results showed that the nitrification process was severely affected by lower C/N value and by high concentration of ammonia. It was noticed an extensive stress effect on the autotrophic bacteria. Furthermore, it was observed an incre…
Tuning the magneto-structural properties of non-porous coordination polymers by HCl chemisorption.
2011
Responsive materials for which physical or chemical properties can be tuned by applying an external stimulus are attracting considerable interest in view of their potential applications as chemical switches or molecular sensors. A potential source of such materials is metal-organic frameworks. These porous coordination polymers permit the physisorption of guest molecules that can provoke subtle changes in their porous structure, thus affecting their physical properties. Here we show that the chemisorption of gaseous HCl molecules by a non-porous one-dimensional coordination polymer instigates drastic modifications in the magnetic properties of the material. These changes result from profoun…
Pressure induced changes in the Raman spectra of liquidn-alkanes and perfluoro-n-alkanes
1982
The main effect of pressures up to 6 kbar on the Raman spectra of liquidn-alkanes and perfluoro-n-alkanes is a reduction of line widths indicative for a slowing-down of rotational motions about the long axes. There is no evidence for a change in the conformer populations.
Structural and Thermal Properties of Ethylene-Norbornene Copolymers Obtained Using Vanadium Homogeneous and SIL Catalysts
2020
The series of ethylene-norbornene (E-NB) copolymers was obtained using different vanadium homogeneous and supported ionic liquid (SIL) catalyst systems. The 13C and 1H NMR (carbon and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy) together with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were applied to determine the composition of copolymers such as comonomer incorporation (CNB), monomer dispersity (MD), monomer reactivity ratio (re), sequence length of ethylene (le) and tetrad microblock distributions. The relation between the type of catalyst, reaction conditions and on the other hand, the copolymer microstructure, chain termination reaction analyzed by the type of unsaturation are discusse…
Photo-oxidation behaviour of polyethylene/polyamide 6 blends filled with organomodified clay: Improvement of the photo-resistance through morphology …
2010
Abstract The impact of small amounts of organomodified clay (OMMT) on the photo-degradation behaviour of two blends obtained by mixing either low-density polyethylene (LDPE) or high density polyethylene (HDPE) with polyamide 6 (PA6) (LDPE/PA6 and HDPE/PA6 75/25 wt-%) was studied. The complex photo-degradation behaviour was followed by monitoring the main physical–mechanical properties of the blends. In particular, mechanical and spectroscopic tests were performed in conditions of accelerated artificial aging. An accurate mechanical and morphological characterization was previously carried out. The presence of the OMMT promotes the unexpected formation of a co-continuous morphology for the H…
Selective functionalization of halloysite cavity by click reaction: structured filler for enhancing mechanical properties of bionanocomposite films
2014
Selective modification of the inner surface of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) by the cycloaddition of azides and alkynes (click reaction) was successfully achieved. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetry confirmed that the modification involved only the HNT cavity. Morphological investigations evidenced that the functionalized nanotubes formed microfibers and clusters in the micrometer range. By means of the casting method, these nanomaterials were dispersed into biopolymeric matrixes (chitosan and hydroxypropyl cellulose) with the aim of obtaining nanocomposite films with tunable properties from the physicochemical viewpoint. For comparison purposes, we also characterize…
Morphology of nanocomposites from ethylene-acrylic acid copolymers
2005
AbstractNew nanocomposites have been prepared by melt-compounding from commercial ethylene-acrylic acid copolymers (EAA) of different molar mass, molecular structure (branched or linear) and AA concentration, and a Zn-ionomer, with three commercial clays containing different proportions of the same organic modifier (dimethyldi(hydrogenated tallow)ammonium ion). Their morphology has been preliminarily investigated by X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy. The nanocomposites showed disordered intercalated morphology, with an expansion of the average gallery height, which appears to depend quite strongly on the molecular architecture of the EAA, whereas the other investigated v…
UV-stabilisation of polystyrene-based nanocomposites provided by polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS)
2012
Abstract The photo-ageing behaviour of Polyhedral Oligomeric SilSequioxane (POSS)-polystyrene (PS) nanocomposites has been investigated for the first time. POSS having different inorganic framework and pendant organic groups have been used in the PS nanocomposite preparation and the formulated films were subjected to accelerated weathering. Compared to pristine PS, the POSS-containing PS developed a lower level of carbonyl and hydroxyl groups as a function of the exposure time, indicating a significantly improved resistance of the nanocomposites to photo-degradation. The results suggest that all of the investigated POSS molecules play a protective role and may extend the in-use lifetime of …
Study of polyethylene nanocomposites with polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane nanofillers—from structural characteristics to mechanical properties a…
2017
High-density polyethylene (HDPE) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) nanocomposites filled with octakis({alkyl}dimethylsiloxy)octasilsesquioxanes (POSS) were prepared by the melt blending method. The effects of the structure and the content of POSS nanofillers on free-volume properties and structural characteristics of nanocomposites were investigated by the positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) and X-ray diffraction methods: wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Incorporation of POSS nanofillers into polyethylene matrices modified the arrangement of the polymer chains and affected the size and number of free-volume holes in nanocomposites.…
