Mechanism of anionic polymerization of (meth)acrylates in the presence of aluminium alkyls, 2. Kinetic investigations with methyl methacrylate in tol…

1995

The kinetics of the polymerization of methyl methacrylate initiated by lithium alkyls (tert-butyllithium or ethyl α-lithiobutyrate) was investigated in the presence of aluminium alkyls (triethylaluminium or triisobutylaluminium) in toluene at −78°C. The rate of polymerization decreases considerably once the living dimer is formed. This suggests that the aluminate end-group coordinates with the penultimate ester group of the polymer chain, thus decreasing reactivity. The results are at variance with an activated monomer mechanism.

Size Tunable Core Crosslinked Micelles from HPMA-Based Amphiphilic Block Copolymers

2017

A variety of core crosslinkable hydroxypropylmethacrylamide-based block copolymers are synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, which are composed of hydroxypropyl-methacrylate as hydrophilic block combined with a statistical hydrophobic block from laurylmethacrylate and the photo crosslinkable monomer. It is discovered that the self-assembled micellar aggregates from these systems vary strongly in size depending not only on the velocity of the polarity switch (nanoprecipitation or slow dialysis) but also on the solvent from which they were dialyzed. In this way micellar aggregates with an Rh varying between 15 and 80 nm can be prepared from the…

HPMC-salicylate conjugates as macromolecular prodrugs: Design, characterization, and nano-rods formation

2009

The design, characterization, and nano-rods formation of hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC)-salicylate conjugates as macromolecular prodrugs, was described. HPMC, obtained from Zhejiang Zhongbao Imp and Exp Corp, was dried under vacuum at 110°C for 8 hr. Nanoparticles were prepared using dialysis process in which 170 mg of HPMC-salicylate sample was dissolved in 5 mL of purified DMSO and was dialyzed against distilled water for 4 days. HPMC-salicylic acid conjugates reveal the absence of sulfur in all of the samples showing that there is no introduction to tosylate groups either covalently bounded or as an impurity.

Inimer-Promoted Synthesis of Branched and Hyperbranched Polylactide Copolymers

2009

A series of (hyper)branched poly(l-lactide)(PLLA) copolymers has been prepared by ring-opening multibranching copolymerization of l-lactide with a hydroxyl-functional (ABB′) lactone inimer, 5HDON (5-hydroxymethyl-1,4-dioxane-2-on). Polymerization was conducted in bulk and solution and catalyzed either by stanneous-2-ethyl hexanoate (Sn(Oct)2) or an organic base, 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene (TBD). Precise structural characterization of the resulting branched copolyester structures was accomplished by a combination of 2D NMR techniques, relying on the comparison with model compounds. The 5HDON inimer was employed in 1% to 20% fractions and is incorporated either as a dendritic unit or…

Atom transfer radical polymerization with different halides (F, Cl, Br, and I): Is the process "living" in the presence of fluorinated initiators?

2016

Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is often used for grafting from fluorinated polymers. Nevertheless, the possibility to initiate an ATRP from a C-F functionality and the activity of the catalysts in the presence of fluoride anions are essentially unexplored. Therefore, we investigated the thermodynamics and kinetics of C-F bond activation by ATRP catalysts and compared it with other halide systems. The ATRP equilibrium constant was estimated to be small for the reaction between [CuITPMA]+ and benzyl fluoride (TPMA = tris(2-pyridylmethyl)- amine). However, [CuITPMA] + could react with the more active initiator diethyl fluoromalonate (DEFM). With DEFM as initiator and CuIBr/TPMA as…

in vitro biological evaluation of folate-functionalized block copolymer micelles for selective anti-cancer drug delivery.

2008

The main objective of this study was to evaluate the ability of folic acid-functionalized diblock copolymer micelles to improve the delivery and uptake of two poorly water-soluble anti-tumor drugs, tamoxifen and paclitaxel, to cancer cells through folate receptor targeting. The diblock copolymer used in this study comprised a hydrophilic poly[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl phosphorylcholine] (MPC) block, carrying at the chain end the folate targeting moiety, and a pH-sensitive hydrophobic poly[2-(diisopropylamino)ethyl methacrylate] (DPA) block (FA-MPC-DPA). The drug-loading capacities of tamoxifen- and paclitaxel-loaded micelles were determined by high performance liquid chromatography and the m…

BIOADHESIVE PROPERTIES OF A POLYAMINOACIDIC HYDROGEL: EVALUATION BY ATR FT-IR SPECTROSCOPY

2005

The bioadhesive properties of a novel chemical hydrogel based on a polymer of protein-like structure, have been investigated by using ATR FT-IR spectroscopy. In particular, the copolymer PHG obtained by partial derivatization of PHEA with GMA was chemically crosslinked by UV irradiation at 313 nm. Crosslinked PHG was treated with water to obtain a swelled sample, named PHG-UV gel, that was brought into contact with a phosphate buffer/citric acid solution at pH 7.0 in the absence or in the presence of mucin at various concentrations (0.01, 0.1 and 1 wt.-%). Preliminary dynamic swelling studies have evidenced the occurrence of an interaction between the PHG-UV gel and the glycoprotein. This r…

UV-photocrosslinking of inulin derivatives to produce hydrogels for drug delivery application.

2005

In this work, INU, a natural polysaccharide, has been chemically modified in order to obtain new photocrosslinkable derivatives. To reach this goal, INU has been derivatized with MA thus obtaining four samples (INU-MA derivatives) as a function of the temperature and time of reaction. An aqueous solution of the derivative INU-MA1 was irradiated by using a UV lamp with an emission range from 250 to 364 nm and without using photoinitiators. The obtained hydrogel showed a remarkable water affinity but it underwent a partial degradation in simulated gastric fluid. To overcome this drawback, INU-MA 1 was derivatized with SA thus obtaining the INU-MA1-SA derivative designed to produce a hydrogel …

Infrared linear dichroism spectroscopy by a double modulation technique

1990

A linear IR dichroism experiment has been devised using a FTIR instrument in combination with a photoelastic modulator. Based on the Mueller-Stokes calculus, a method to directly obtain the absorbance spectra Av parallel and Av perpendicular from the modulated interferogram is developped, which allows the sensitive evaluation of the dichroic ratio. The photoelastic modulator, in combination with a FTIR instrument, offers high sensitivity, high speed, excellent signal to noise ratio and a broad spectral range from 3300 to 850 cm-1. First experimental results obstained from SBS block copolymer are reported.
