Determination of the oxygen transmissibility and permeability of hydrogel contact lenses

To test the validity of the method of stacked hydrogel contact lenses to obtain the oxygen permeability and transmissibility coefficients of the lenses, the coefficients of one low hydration (38% water) and two high hydration (55 and 58% water) hydrogel contact lenses stacked one to five on an oxygen electrode were deter- mined. From the oxygen diffusion through the lenses, the current intensity in the stationary state was determined, and from this the "instrument" the oxygen transmis- sibility was obtained. Abstract Given the great demand for polymers prepared from renewable materials, the synthesis of a glutamic-acid-based hydrogel by solution and inverse miniemulsion polymerization is herein presented. Novel hydrogels based on a polyasparthydrazide. Synthesis and characterization

α,β-polyasparthydrazide (PAHy), a synthetic water-soluble biocompatible polymer, was chemically crosslinked with ethyleneglycol diglycidylether (EGDGE), in order to obtain water swellable microparticies. These were characterized by means of FT-IR spectrophotometry and by means of particle size distribution analysis. Caffeine (a stimulant) and ethanol (a depressant) may have opposite effects in our body, but under in vitro conditions they can “gel” together. Caffeine, being one of the widely used stimulants, continued to surprise the scientific community with its unprecedented biological, medicinal and physicochemical properties. Timing of Heparin Addition to the Biomolecular Corona Influences the Cellular Uptake of Nanocarriers.

Few studies have considered the interaction of nanocarriers with drugs and the implications for their individual efficiency. Here, we demonstrate that heparin, a common anticoagulant, interacts with nanocarriers. Hence, nanocarriers, precoated with heparin and plasma in different conditions, were incubated with cancer cells, as well as primary cells from human blood. The relation between the timing of the heparin's addition to the nanocarrier and the cellular uptake extent was assessed by flow cytometry. Cellular Uptake of DNA Block Copolymer Micelles with Different Shapes

The cellular uptake of DNA block copolymer micelles composed of DNA-b-PPO in Caco-2 cells was studied. In particular it was investigated if the shape of micelle aggregates influences the internalization. Rod-like polymeric particles were taken up 12 times more efficiently than their spherical counter parts although they were composed of the same constituents. Furthermore, it was observed that internalization of all the micelle systems was more efficient than the pristine DNA controls. A cytotoxicity assay proved the non-toxic nature of DNA-b-PPO micelle aggregates.
