Mössbauer Spectroscopy and Organotin Polymers

2008

Mössbauer spectroscopy allows the structural analysis of certain metal atoms situated in complex structures. Briefly, Mössbauer spectroscopy is a resonant absorption spectroscopy that is observed best in isotopes having long lived, low-lying excited nuclear energy states. The largest recoil-free resonant cross-section is found for 57Fe. Currently, Mössbauer spectroscopy is being used on Mars to identify iron compounds that are present in the Martian landscape. There are over 20,000 entries in SciFinder for Mössbauer spectroscopy, of which the two largest entries are for iron and tin containing compounds. There are only about 100 entries for organotin compounds, with only a handful related t…

On the Use of the Nanoindentation Unloading Curve to Measure the Young's Modulus of Polymers on a Nanometer Scale

2005

Summary: The nanoindentation test is a fundamental tool to assess the link between morphology and mechanical properties. The preliminary results of a more exhaustive study about the applicability to polymers of the most used procedure to determine elastic modulus by indentation are reported in this short communication. A departure of the experimental conditions from the theoretical assumptions and results that give rise to the Oliver and Pharr analysis is shown to occur under a wide range of experimental conditions, with applied loads and penetration depths covering several orders of magnitude and using different indenter geometries. Unloading curves with exponents significantly larger than…

Enhancement of metallo-supramolecular dissociation kinetics in telechelic terpyridine-capped poly(ethylene glycol) assemblies in the semi-dilute regi…

2019

The dynamics of supramolecular polymer assemblies is governed by that of their polymeric building blocks and that of the transient bonds between them. Entrapment of such bonds by topological crowding often causes renormalization of the bond lifetimes towards prolonging. In the present study, by contrast, we show that this effect can also be inverse in the case of telechelic metallo-supramolecular polymers in semi-dilute solution. We focus on linear poly(ethylene glycols) capped by terpyridine binding motifs at both ends that can form metal–ligand coordinative bonds with various transition metal ions, thereby creating transient metallo-supramolecular assemblies of varying length and binding …

Emergence, evidence, and effect of junction clustering in supramolecular polymer materials

2021

A significant fraction of biomaterials consists of supramolecular polymers and networks formed by non-covalent interactions between associative motifs. They typically contain complex structures in which on top of binary associations, phase-separation and aggregation of associative junctions occur. Such hierarchical assemblies have significant influences on the dynamics as well as the physical and mechanical properties of the materials. Similar to supramolecular biomaterials, aggregation of associative junctions has also been frequently reported to occur in synthetic supramolecular polymers and networks. Engineering of such secondary structures in a sense to create and control the extent of …

Solid State Analysis of Metal-Containing Polymers Employing Mossbauer Spectroscopy, Solid State NMR and F EI TOF MALDI MS

2010

Polymers in general and metal-containing polymers in particular are often sparingly soluble or insoluble, in contrast to small molecules. Thus, special significance is attached to characterization techniques that can be applied to the materials as solids. Here, three techniques are discussed that give structural information gained from the solid material. Mossbauer spectroscopy is a powerful technique that may give information on the structure about the metal-containing moiety for about 44 different nuclei. Its use in describing the structure of the product obtained from organotin dichlorides and the unsymmetrical ciprofloxacin is presented along with the reaction implications of the result…

Tuneable Transient Thermogels Mediated by a pH- and Redox-Regulated Supramolecular Polymerization.

2017

A multistimuli-responsive transient supramolecular polymerization of β-sheet-encoded dendritic peptide monomers in water is presented. The amphiphiles, which contain glutamic acid and methionine, undergo a glucose oxidase catalyzed, glucose-fueled transient hydrogelation in response to an interplay of pH and oxidation stimuli, promoted by the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Adjusting the enzyme and glucose concentration allows tuning of the assembly and the disassembly rates of the supramolecular polymers, which dictate the stiffness and transient stability of the hydrogels. The incorporation of triethylene glycol chains introduces thermoresponsive properties to the materials. …

Ordering, phase behavior, and correlations of semiflexible polymers in confinement.

2021

Semiflexible polymers are ubiquitous in biological systems, e.g., as building blocks of the cytoskeleton, and they also play an important role in various materials due to their ability to form liquid-crystalline order. These rigid macromolecules are characterized by numerous (hierarchical) length-scales that define their static and dynamic properties. Confinement can promote uniform order, e.g., through capillary nematization in narrow slits, but it can also introduce long-ranged disruptions of the nematic ordering field through (unavoidable) topological defects in spherical containers. This Perspective concentrates on the theoretical description and computational modeling of such confined …

Cooperative supramolecular polymerization and amplification of chirality in C3-symmetrical OPE-based trisamides.

2011

Sergeants-and-soldiers experiments demonstrate the amplification of chirality that transforms the racemic mixture of helical columns formed from OPE-based trisamides into enantiomerically enriched helical structures (see scheme). The cooperative supramolecular polymerization of the trisamides is investigated by theoretical calculations and temperature-dependent UV/Vis and CD experiments. Consequences of linking charged and uncharged monomers to binary copolymers studied in dilute solution. Part I: Viscometric behavior of the homopolym…

2017

Abstract Intrinsic viscosities, generalized intrinsic viscosities and viscometric interaction parameters were measured for aqueous solutions of poly(ethylene oxide) [PEO], poly(N,N-dimethyl aminoethyl methacrylate) [PR] (uncharged) and for poly{[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl] trimethylammonium iodide} [PR+] (charged) within a wide range of molar masses. In this manner it was possible to establish the information required for the study of non-additivity effects upon the formation of binary copolymers from the monomers specified above. The following additional items were of particular interest: The effects of charging PR to PR+ and the composition dependence of the coil overlap in the case of sali…

Intrinsic Viscosities of Polymer Blends: Sensitive Probes of Specific Interactions between the Counterions of Polyelectrolytes and Uncharged Macromol…

2018

In joint dilute aqueous solutions of pullulan (PUL) and poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS-Na) the Na+ ions of the polyelectrolyte interact so favorably with the monomeric units of PUL that isolated coils containing both types of macromolecules are formed upon dilution. When water is replaced against a 1 M solution of NaCl, this effect dies out because of the large surplus of Na+ ions. On the other hand, if the water contains increasing amounts of the respective counterpolymer instead of NaCl, the formation of mixed isolated coils is fostered, where a further diminution of the intrinsic viscosities is caused by the lower the solvent quality. The molar mass of PSS-Na plays an important rol…
