Special Issue “Smart Urban Lighting Systems”

2020

The design and operation of multifunctional infrastructures for public lighting as well as their impact on the urban environment and citizens’ life is today of great interest. The cost of energy for public lighting is often an issue for the budget of municipalities. Furthermore, researchers’ and designers’ attention is increasingly focused on aspects of public lighting not directly valuable through economic factors. Starting from the “quality” of the light environment, looking at citizens’ visual comfort, the light has to be considered as an instrument to improve the urban context and objects therein (including buildings). Indeed, urban degradation (lack of infrastructures, maintenance, ser…

Poor School Academic Performance and Benign Epilepsy with Centro-Temporal Spikes

2023

Background: Poor academic performance of students with epilepsy seems to be a multifactorial problem related to difficulties in reading, writing, math, and logic skills. Poor school and academic performances refer to learning problems in a specific academic area due to learning disorders and learning difficulties not excluding the ability to learn in a different manner during school and academic life. Sometimes, school, academic difficulties, and Rolandic epilepsy can coexist together, and there may be comorbidities. Consequently, the risk of impaired academic performance in people with epilepsy is high. Methods: This review analyzed the relationship between Benign Epilepsy with Centro-Temp…

Three-Dimensional Calibration for Routine Analyses of Bromide and Nitrate Ions as Indicators of Groundwater Quality in Coastal Territories

2019

Nitrate and bromide ions are generally considered indicators of anthropogenic pollution and seawater intrusion, respectively, in the groundwater of coastal territories. The analysis of these species is generally carried out with routine chromatographic analyses which generally afford partially merged or poorly resolved peaks. In the present paper a simple method for the correct evaluation of their concentration in water is reported. This method does not imply utilization of other instruments or technologies, only the mathematical elaboration of the data obtained from routine analysis of standard solutions containing the two species. Standard binary solutions of nitrate and bromide ions at d…

Balixafortide (a CXCR4 antagonist) plus eribulin in HER2 negative metastatic breast cancer: Dose-response analysis of efficacy from phase I single-ar…

2020

e15209 Background: Balixafortide (B) is a potent, selective antagonist of the chemokine receptor CXCR4. High CXCR4 levels correlate with aggressive metastatic phenotypes and poor prognosis in metastatic breast cancer (MBC). Efficacy and safety data were published recently from the Phase 1 trial investigating B + eribulin (E) in patients with HER2 negative MBC1. We report the final efficacy analyses from this trial, including assessment of dose-response. Methods: In this single-arm, dose escalation trial, patients (pts) received E + increasing doses of B using a 3+3 design in 3 parts: Part I (cohorts received low E doses); Part II (dose-escalation cohort for B [1−5.5mg/kg] + 1.4mg/m2 E); Ex…

Cytochemical Cell Typing of Metastatic Tumors According to their Cytoskeletal Proteins

1986

Conventional staining methods alone are often insufficient to make accurate histodiagnosis of malignant tumors. However, additional information about the cell type and the state of differentiation of tumor cells can be provided by several molecular markers. To be relevant diagnostically, these markers must be conservative, i.e. expressed not only in well differentiated tumors but also in poorly differentiated tumors and in metastases. These criteria are fulfilled by certain components of the cytoskeleton, notably the proteins forming the intermediate-sized filaments (IFs) and the desmosomal plaque proteins.

Effects of sleep apnea and kidney dysfunction on objective sleep quality in nondialyzed patients with chronic kidney disease: an ESADA study

2020

Study Objectives: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) often report poor sleep quality, but they commonly exhibit OSA. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of OSA severity and of estimated glomerular filtration rate impairment on objective sleep quality in nondialyzed patients with CKD, defined as an estimated glomerular filtration rate <60 mL/min/1.73m2. Methods: Polysomnographic sleep characteristics were compared between patients with (n = 430) and without CKD (n = 6,639) in the European Sleep Apnea Database cohort. Comparisons were repeated in 375 patients with CKD and 375 control patients without CKD matched for sleep center, age, sex, and AHI, and in 310 matche…
