This chapter highlights research on the concepts of life-space mobility and active ageing. With age, the life-space of older people becomes more restricted and they spend more and more time in or around their home, a situation that increases the risk of social isolation, physical inactivity, and poor quality of life. Optimal mobility is the result of a good balance between the environmental demands and affordances, on the one hand, and the personal resources and capacity of the individual, on the other hand. A mobile game as a support tool for children with severe difficulties in reading and spelling

We used a randomized controlled trial to investigate if a mobile game, GraphoLearn (GL), could effectively support the learning of first graders (N = 70), who have severe difficulties in reading and spelling. We studied the effects of two versions of the game: GL Reading, which focused on training letter-sound correspondence and word reading; and GL Spelling, which included additional training in phonological skills and spelling. During the spring of first grade, the children trained with tablet computers which they could carry with them during the six-week intervention. The average exposure time to training was 5 hr 44 min. Experimental Hypertensive Intracerebral Mass Hemorrhage in Cats

About two–thirds of all patients with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage suffer from systemic hypertension. Additionally systemic hypertension is the main factor indicating a poor prognosis of intracerebral hemorrhage. This has been shown in our statistical evaluation of 117 cases of conservatively treated spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage. More than 48% of the hypertensive patients died, but only 30% of the normotensive patients (Fig. 1). In an experimental study we investigated the influence of systemic hypertension and normotension on epidural pressure and on the formation of brain edema during the first 12 h after artificial intracerebral hemorrhage.

The work takes its starting point from Libanius, Or. 46, 21, in which the existence of a contribution paid by shopkeepers and intended for the sustenance of the poor is attested in 4th century AD Antioch. In the light of the comparative textual analysis of Julian's letter to Arsace and Libanius' speeches 2 and 46, it is hypothesised that the emperor had urged the Antiochians to request some measure that could take away the privilege of almsgiving from the Church. To the request, formally made to him by the Antiochians, he would have responded with that rescript whose content would be entrusted only to these few Libanian lines.
The Hamburg/ESO R-process Enhanced Star survey (HERES):XI. The highly r-process-enhanced star CS 29497-004

We report an abundance analysis for the highly r-process-enhanced (r-II) star CS 29497-004, a very metal-poor giant with Teff = 5013K and [Fe/H]=-2.85, whose nature was initially discovered in the course of the HERES project. Our analysis is based on high signal-to-noise, high-resolution (R~75000) VLT/UVES spectra and MARCS model atmospheres under the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium, and obtains abundance measurements for a total of 46 elements, 31 of which are neutron-capture elements. Comparison between thrombotic risk scores in essential thrombocythemia and survival implications.

The conventional thrombotic risk stratification in essential thrombocythemia (ET) distinguishes patients in two risk groups based on previous thrombosis and age (< or >60). The IPSET-thrombosis takes into account four risk factors: age greater than 60 years and the presence of CV risk factors, thrombosis history and JAK2 V617F presence. The revised IPSET-thrombosis uses three adverse variables to delineate four risk categories: age greater than 60, thrombosis history, and JAK2 V617F presence. We compared different risk models in the estimation of thrombotic risk in 191 patients with ET and the role of specific driver mutations affecting overall survival, according to thrombotic risk. …
Support Systems for Poor Readers: Empirical Data From Six EU Member States

International audience; This study surveyed and compared support systems for poor readers in six member states of the European Union (EU). The goal was to identify features of effective support systems. A large-scale questionnaire survey was conducted among mainstream teachers (n = 4,210) and remedial teachers (n = 2,395). Results indicate that the six support systems differed substantially, with effective support systems showing high performance on all variables measured. Improvement in Risk Stratification in Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation Using a Combination of the Tumor Marker CA125 and the Logistic EuroSCORE

Conventional risk scores have not been accurate in predicting peri- and postprocedural risk of patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). Elevated levels of the tumor marker carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA125) have been linked to adverse outcomes after TAVI. We studied the additional value of CA125 to that of the EuroSCORE in predicting long-term mortality after TAVI.During a median follow-up of 59 weeks, 115 of 422 patients (27%) died after TAVI. Mortality was higher with elevated CA125 (30 U/mL) and EuroSCORE (median) (47% vs 20%, P.001 and 38% vs 16%, P.001, respectively).
