Influences of rhythm- and timbre-related musical features on characteristics of music-induced movement

Music makes us move. Several factors can affect the characteristics of such movements, including individual factors or musical features. For this study, we investigated the effect of rhythm- and timbre-related musical features as well as tempo on movement characteristics. Sixty participants were presented with 30 musical stimuli representing different styles of popular music, and instructed to move along with the music. Optical motion capture was used to record participants’ movements. This article explores the role that semiotic communication plays in the generation of narrative affect. It also draws on Suruchi Sood’s concept of audience involvement as being capable of increasing self-efficacy and collective-efficacy, both of which are crucial to behaviour change. It therefore, demonstrates how semiotic tropes are used in creative media narratives to elicit affect and in turn generate authentic audience involvement with the subjects of those narratives, a process which eventually has positive consequences for behaviour change communication. En este artículo se evidencian de manera notoria las desigualdades de género en el campo de la música, a través del análisis de la presencia de la mujer en la música de las fiestas populares. Se realiza una aproximación a los estudios de género y las desigualdades femeninas. Además, se estudia la in(visibilidad) de las mujeres en las Fiestas de Interés Turístico Internacional de España. Se utiliza una metodología de análisis de contenido para extraer datos y establecer categorías. Las conclusiones apuntan que la presencia femenina en las músicas de las fiestas populares es escasa o inexistente.
