International audience; The sound absorption coefficient of porous materials covered with low open area perforated plate is studied under high sound intensities in the absence of mean flow. The theoretical considerations are based on the equivalent fluid following the Johnson-Champoux-Allard approach and the use of the transfer matrix method. To take into account the high sound levels effects, the air flow resistivity of each layer is modified following the Forchheimer law. Two specimens of perforated plate are built and tested when backed by a polymeric foam and a fibrous material. Net charge and polarizability of zeolitic Brønsted acidic sites

The interacting induced-dipoles polarization model, implemented in our program POLAR, is used for the calculation of the effective polarizability of the zeolitic bridged OH group, which results much higher than that of the free silanol group. A high polarizability is also calculated for the bridged OH group with a Si4+, in the absence of Lewis-acid promotion of silanol by Al3+. The crystal polarizability is estimated from the Clausius-Mossotti relationship. Siliceous zeolites are low-permittivity isolators. Optical sensing of cyanide using hybrid biomolecular films

The selective sensing of cyanide anions in water has been studied using a hybrid biomaterial composed of a mesoporous TiO2 film of crystalline nanoparticles and the protein hemoglobin. The mesoporous structure of the film prevents protein unfolding and also stabilizes the oxidized form of the prosthetic groups. Low-levels of cyanide anions (<0.2 ppm (0.2 mgr/L)) can be detected by monitoring the changes in the optical properties of the hybrid biomolecular films upon cyanide binding to the heme groups.
Carbons from second generation biomass as sustainable supports for catalytic systems

Abstract In this study activated carbons were produced from the wood of three different wood species (pine, birch, spruce). The resulting activated carbons were characterized in bulk for ash content, carbon content (elemental analyses), specific surface area, and pore size distribution, and at the surface by measuring the autogenerated pH and studying their structure by XPS. All the samples presented high surface areas and appeared to be mesoporous materials (mesopores >80%). [EN] Osteoporosis is an illness which appears when the osteoblast/osteoclast activities are unbalanced taking place bone resorption (caused by osteoclasts) in higher extension than bone formation (induced by osteoblasts). Alendronate is one of the most used drugs for osteoporosis treatment despite its scarce bioavailability. The selective surface modification by phosphonic acids of SiO2−TiO2 supports at the micrometer and molecular scale was investigated. Under aqueous conditions, phosphonic acids bind to TiO2 and not to SiO2 surfaces. A micropatterned support was prepared by electron beam microlithography and selectivity, of the surface modification was evidenced using scanning Auger electron spectroscopy (SAES). The second support was a mesoporous SiO2−TiO2 mixed oxide (10 mol % Ti) epoxidation catalyst prepared by sol−gel processing. Abstract A series of mesoporous and macroporous silicas with a mean pore diameter (PD), between 6 and 200 nm were reacted with a copolymer of styrene and vinyl-methyldiethoxysilane. The mass load of coated silicas corresponded to the monolayer capacity of the polymer calculated on the basis of the molecular cross-sectional area, except for the two mesoporous silcias of PD = 6 and 7.5 nm. Depending on the pore size, changes occurred in the specific surface area, as, between the native and the coated product. Pressure Effect Studies on the Spin Transition of Microporous 3D Polymer [Fe(pz)Pt(CN)4]

Pressure effects on the spin transition of the three-dimensional (3D) porous coordination polymer {Fe(pz)[Pt(CN)4]} have been investigated in the interval 105 Pa–1.0 GPa through variable-temperature (10–320 K) magnetic susceptibility measurements and spectroscopic studies in the visible region at room temperature. These studies have disclosed a different behavior of the compound under pressure. In the magnetic experiments, a temperature independent paramagnetic behavior has been observed under 0.4 GPa. In contrast, at room temperature and at 0.8 GPa, a complete HS-to-LS transition has been evidenced. The differences in the magnetic behavior are strongly related with the porous structure of …
