Developing Academic Thinking in the EFL Writing Classroom: A Rationale for General-academic Writing Assignments

2020

How Does the pH of Tree Bark Change with the Presence of the Epiphytic Bryophytes from the Family Orthotrichaceae in the Interaction with Trunk Incli…

2021

The pH of tree bark is affected by many factors, amongst them epiphytic bryophytes changing in their active state environment. Thus, we hypothesized that bryophytes can change bark acidity, dependently of the inclination of the branches, as inclination affect the water regime and particle deposition. We measured the pH under bryophyte cushions and compared it to nearby naked bark. Additionally, we compared results with experimental bark covering with neutral cover. We found that the pH of naked bark declines with decreasing inclination of trunks. Although bryophyte cover did not generally change the pH of the bark, there was a significant interaction with inclination: with higher inclinatio…

Relationship among Body Composition, Adipocytokines, and Irisin on Exercise Capacity and Quality of Life in COPD: A Pilot Study

2022

Adipose tissue is an endocrine organ that interferes with the severity of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Although inflammatory markers, body composition, and nutritional status have a significant impact on pulmonary function, the real contribution of adipocytokines and myokines in COPD is still controversial. We aimed to evaluate the role played by the body composition, leptin, adiponectin, haptoglobin, and irisin on the functional exercise capacity, respiratory function, and quality of life (QoL) in COPD. In 25 COPD (20% GOLD-1; 60% GOLD-2; 20% GOLD-3) patients and 26 matched control subjects, we find that leptin, total adiponectin and haptoglobin are significantly increased…

Towards Affective Algorithmic Composition

2013

Automated systems for the selective adjustment of emotional responses by means of musical features are driving an emerging field: affective algorithmic composition. Strategies for algorithmic composition, and the large variety of systems for computer-automation of such strategies, are well documented in literature. Re-views of computer systems for expressive performance (CSEMPs) also provide a thorough overview of the extensive work carried out in the area of expressive computer music performance, with some crossover between composition and performance systems. Although there has been a significant amount of work (largely carried out within the last decade) implementing systems for algorith…

Effect of the Cement and Limestone Industry on the Chemical Properties of Water Beneath Tree Canopies

2018

This study is a continuation of earlier research aimed at determining the changes in the quality of precipitation beneath the canopy in pine stands affected by the emission of alkaline pollutants. This study was conducted in the Gorazdze Forest District, in a forest complex in south-western Poland affected by the cement and limestone industry. The rainwater measurements under the canopy of Scots pine were made according to the methodology of the environmental monitoring. Wet and dry deposits, thus the total pollution load brought into the forest ecosystem, were analysed. The pH and electrical conductivity was measured in collected water samples. The results showed differences between precip…

2018

In 1937, Pablo Picasso was chosen by the Republican Gov-ernment to be the artistic representative in the Spanish pavilion at the International Exhibition in Paris. The subject of the work was to be a denunciation of the Spanish Civil War. Picasso took his inspiration from the Guernica Tragedy, and the result was what is undoubtedly one of the most universally renowned paintings of the 20th century. As the artist never offered an interpretation of the painting, historians have since made an enormous variety of hypotheses. One of them suggests that the female figure carrying an oil lamp is the personification of the Republic.

2003

A theoretical approach to the notion of significate and to existing models for the analysis of prepositions argues for a polysemous reading of auf as preposition or particle. Our study demonstrates the inadequacy of both the localist model and the theory of preposition bleaching, arguing that both the spatial interpretation and the bleaching phenomenon can be accounted for by the syntactic function and the semantic environment of the preposition-particle. Spatial and abstract uses can be dealt with homogeneously within the theoretical frameworks of incidence (G. Guillaume, G. Moignet, J. Cervoni) and inference (P. Cadiot), which disproves the theory of Aktionsart as applied to verbal partic…

Management practices in Finnish manufacturing establishments : evidence from FMOP

2018

Edistysaskeleet aineiston keräämisessä ovat nostaneet johtamiskäytännöt esiin osana vastausta kysymykseen tuottavuuseroista. Kvantitatiiviseen kyselytyökaluun perustuvat tutkimukset ovat löytäneet kumulatiivista näyttöä johtamiskäytäntöjen kyvystä selittää tuottavuuseroja. Kyseisen työkalun nimi on Management and Organizational Practices Survey. Tässä tutkielmassa tarkastellaan Suomen johtamis- ja organisaatiokäytäntöjen kyselyllä eli FMOP-kyselyllä kerätyn aineiston avulla Suomen tehdasteollisuuden toimipaikkojen johtamiskäytäntöjä. Tarkoituksena on selvittää, onko Suomessa tilastollisesti merkitseviä alueellisia eroja johtamiskäytäntöjen laadussa. Helsinki-Uusimaata verrataan muihin Suome…
