The standard treatment for patients with clinically resectable rectal cancer is surgery. Postoperative radiochemotherapy is recommended for patients with advanced disease (pT3/4 or pN+). In recent years, encouraging results of preoperative radiotherapy have been reported. This prospective randomized phase-III trial (CAO/ARO/AIO-94) compares the efficacy of neoadjuvant radiochemotherapy to standard postoperative radiochemotherapy. Neo-nervegenesis in 3D dynamic responsive implant for inguinal hernia repair. Qualitative study.

Abstract Background Prosthetic repair of inguinal hernias is one of the most performed surgical procedures. Nevertheless, high rates of complications affect the surgical treatment. Implant fixation, poor-quality tissue ingrowth and mesh shrinkage seem to be involved in postoperative complications, discomfort and chronic pain following inguinal hernia repair. To address these issues a multilamellar shaped 3D dynamic responsive prosthesis has been developed. Association of serum neurofilament light chain levels and neuropsychiatric manifestations in systemic lupus erythematosus

Background: The aim was to evaluate the diagnostic potential of serum neurofilament light chain (sNfL) measurements in patients with neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus (NPSLE). Methods: sNfL levels were determined by single molecule array assay in a retrospective cross-sectional cohort of 144 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). After log-transformation of sNfL levels, mean sNfL levels were compared between NPSLE patients and SLE patients without neuropsychiatric disease using Student’s t test. Equilibrium disorders caused by involvement of brainstem and cerebellar structures are common in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), but peripheral conditions such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) can be sometimes confused with those of a central origin. Due to the results of an interdisciplinary study on patients with vertigo as the chief symptom and on the background of psychodynamic theories concerning anxiety disorders the term of phobic postural vertigo (Brandt & Dieterich 1986) is discussed. It becomes obvious that phobic postural vertigo is a generalizing term which encompasses different forms of psychogenic vertigo. The authors plead for a more differentiated diagnosis and subgroup oriented classification of vertigo caused by psychiatric disorders.

Changes in glutamatergic neurotransmission within the migraine cycle

Background Although some neurophysiological studies have showed cortical excitability changes during different phases of the migraine cycle, the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying attacks recurrence remain unknown. Here we evaluated the response of the migraine motor-cortex to brief trains of 5-Hz repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in order to study, indirectly, presynaptic mechanisms of glutamatergic neurotransmission across the different phases of the migraine cycle.
