Comparison of repositioning maneuvers for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo of posterior semicircular canal: advantages of hybrid maneuver.
2012
Objective: The prevalence of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is becoming more frequent in elderly population. The presence of comorbid factors has to be considered before assessment as well as before commencing any repositioning treatment. Our aims were evaluation of the maneuvers efficacy and evaluation of the applicability of hybrid maneuver (HM) in patients with physical limitation. Study design and setting: This is a randomized study in 2 tertiary referral centers. Intervention: This is a therapeutic intervention. Patients: All consecutive patients with diagnosis of BPPV of posterior canal matching the inclusion criteria were enrolled. Patients underwent treatment soon after…
Totally laparoscopic liver resections for primary and metastatic cancer in the elderly: safety, feasibility and short-term outcomes.
2012
Standard oncologic liver resections performed on elderly patients (≥70 years old) have been shown to be safe and effective. The aim of this study was to analyze operative and oncologic short-term outcomes of totally laparoscopic liver resections (TLLR) performed on elderly patients for malignancies. We performed a retrospective statistical analysis of prospectively recorded data of TLLR performed from October 2008 to February 2012 by a single hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgeon. Patients were divided into two groups according to age (<70 vs. ≥70 years old) and perioperative outcomes were compared. A total of 60 TLLR for malignancies were identified of which 25 patients (42 %) were aged ≥…
Carotid atherosclerosis in renal transplant recipients: Relationships with cardiovascular risk factors and plasma lipoproteins
1999
BACKGROUND: Renal transplant recipients have an increased incidence of cardiovascular disease, but less data exist about cerebrovascular atherosclerosis. In this study, we assessed the prevalence of carotid lesions as evaluated by B-mode ultrasonography in a group of renal transplant recipients, and we evaluated univariate and multivariate relationships between common risk factors and plasma lipoproteins and carotid lesions. METHODS: Fifty-seven renal transplant recipients and 113 age- and gender-matched controls underwent a complete clinical visit for the evaluation of risk factors present. In all subjects, a blood sample was collected for lipoprotein determination, and an ultrasound high-…
Use of a new cross-linked collagen membrane for the treatment of dehiscence-type defects at titanium implants: a prospective, randomized-controlled d…
2009
OBJECTIVES The aim of the present randomized-controlled double-blinded clinical multicenter study was to assess the use of either a new cross-linked (VN) or a native collagen membrane (BG) for the treatment of dehiscence-type defects at titanium implants. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of n=54 patients were recruited in four German university clinics. According to a parallel-groups design, dehiscence-type defects at titanium implants were filled with a natural bone mineral and randomly assigned to either VN or BG. Submerged sites were allowed to heal for 4 months. Primary (e.g., changes in defect length - DeltaDL, quality of newly formed tissue [0-4] - TQ) and secondary parameters (e.g., memb…
Improvement of wound healing after hemorrhoidectomy: a double-blind, randomized study of botulinum toxin injection.
2005
PURPOSE: Hemorrhoidectomy is usually associated with significant pain during the postoperative period. The spasm of the internal sphincter seems to play in important role in the origin of pain. This study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of intrasphincter injection of botulinum toxin after hemaorrhoidectomy in reducing the maximum testing pressure of the anal canal, accelerating wound healing, and decreasing postoperative pain when resting and during defecation. METHODS: Thirty patients with hemorrhoids of third and fourth degree were included in the study and randomized in two groups. Anorectal manometry was performed preoperatively and 5 and 30 days afterward ill all patients un…
Bowel perforation in Crohn's Disease: correlation between CDAI and Clavien-Dindo scores
2018
Background Many studies have elaborated different kind of activity indices for Crohn's Disesase (CD) with the endpoint of univocally measure and evaluate the gravity of its lesions and symptoms. Aim Purpose of this work is to study and define the correlation that runs between the preoperative score obtained at the Crohn's Disease Activity Index, the occurrence of postoperative complications that will require re-intervention and the severity of the postoperative lesions evaluated using the Clavien-Dindo score. Patients and methods We have collected and analyzed data from 23 patients (12 males, 11 females) that in a period that spans from 2010 to 2016 had been recovered in our Operative Unit …
Patients requiring interruption of long-term oral anticoagulant therapy: the use of fixed sub-therapeutic doses of low-molecular weight heparin.
2009
Introduction: We tested the efficacy and safety of fixed doses of Low-Molecular Weight Heparin (LMWH) in patients requiring interruption of Vitamin-k Antagonist (VKA) because of invasive procedures Methodology: Pre-operatively, patients discontinued VKA 5 +/- 1days; in those at low-risk for thrombosis, LMWH was given at a prophylactic dosage of 3.800 U.I. (nadroparin) or 4.000 U.I. (enoxaparin) anti-FXa once daily the night before the procedure. In patients at high-risk for thrombosis, LMWH was started early after VKA cessation and given at fixed sub-therapeutic doses (3.800 or 4.000 UI anti-FXa twice daily) until surgery. Post-operatively, LMWH was reinitiated 12 hours after procedure whil…
Short-and long-term outcome after PTCA in patients with stable and unstable angina
1990
Acute results and follow-up data over a period of 36 months after attempted PTCA in 406 patients with stable angina and 202 patients with unstable angina are reported. The rate of acute complications (death, myocardial infarction and bypass grafting (CABG) amounted to 1.5% in stable and 6.4% in unstable patients (P less than 0.005). Within the first week after PTCA a significantly lower percentage (1.7% vs 10.4%) of cardiac events (death, myocardial infarction, CABG and repeat PTCA) was observed in the stable group (P less than 0.001). During a 12-month follow-up period, another 16.3% of the patients in the stable group and 30.7% of unstable patients suffered a new cardiac event (P less tha…
''Modulation of Anticipatory Postural Activity For Multiple Conditions of A Whole-body Pointing Task''
2012
Tolambiya, A. | Chiovetto, E. | Pozzo, T. | Thomas, E.; International audience; ''This is a study on associated postural activities during the anticipatory segments of a multijoint movement. Several previous studies have shown that they are task dependant. The previous studies, however, have mostly been limited in demonstrating the presence of modulation for one task condition, that is, one aspect such as the distance of the target or the direction of reaching. Real-life activities like whole-body pointing, however, can vary in several ways. How specific is the adaptation of the postural activities for the diverse possibilities of a whole-body pointing task? We used a classification paradig…
Post-prandial alterations in LDL size and subclasses in patients with growth hormone deficiency
2008
Abstract Objective Several studies have suggested that lipoproteins generated during the post-prandial phase are highly atherogenic, with modifications in low-density lipoproteins (LDL) size and density. In the present study we assessed post-prandial variations in LDL size and subclasses in patients with growth hormone deficiency (GHD). Design We studied in 12 hypopituitary patients with GHD and 10 healthy control subjects matched for gender, age and body mass index (BMI) post-prandial variations after a standardized meal consisting of 35% fat, 45% carbohydrate and 20% of protein (Clinutren Mix ® , Nestle) and containing calories corresponding to 1/3 of estimated basal metabolic rate. Blood…
