Digital Infrastructure Enabling Platforms for Health Information and Education in the Global South
2020
This chapter aims at documenting how digital divide determinants are affecting the ability of digital infrastructure to be used as a platform for health information and education in Sub-Saharan Africa. More specifically, the chapter draws from case studies in Madagascar, Niger, Cote d’Ivoire, Senegal, and Tanzania, and we showcase the best praxis on how digital technologies are used to improve learning and health information usage. Some tested experiments have been successful but rarely scaled up, depriving part of the population—the poorest and those living in rural areas who “consume” few public resources—from opportunities to access improved education and health services. Along with the …
Potentials of Togetherness: Beyond Individualism and Community in Nordic Art Education
2013
Historically, art education has focused mainly on individual learning processes. In Nordic countries,' for example, discourses of training the rational individual through skills of objective representation, developing the authentic individual through child-centered education, or stimulating identity-processes through critical pedagogy have dominated over ideas of collectivity, community, and society (llleris, 2002; Kjosavik, 2001; Lindstrom, 2009; Pedersen, 1998; Pohjakallio, 1998). Today, poststructuralist theories of subjectivity and subjectivation are challenging these modernist discourses by proposing more dynamic models of multiple and instable learning selves, always in the making (e.…

Complejidad social y calidad informativa: hacia un periodismo "glocal"
2013
In the so-called information (and knowledge) society, quality information is, more than ever, an indispensable and inalienable public good for any citizen who wants to exercise his or her civic and political rights. Because of this, we need to have reliable (rigorous and autonomous) communication media, which disseminate relevant and quality information. But journalism does not only depend on structural questions, but also on the conditions and limits (such as simplification, for instance) that mark professional praxis, either of the political or the socioeconomic type. Social complexity requires a treatment of information that might explain reality, which implies taking advantage of the sc…

Slow Science: Research and Teaching for Sustainable Praxis

In broad strokes, slow science can be considered a humble, global and mainly virtual academic underground movement. peerReviewed
Teaching mechanical oscillations using an integrate curriculum
1997
Abstract A set of teaching materials dealing with harmonic oscillations was developed as part of a research project investigating the influence of different pedagogical tools on physics learning. The materials incorporate simulation software and laboratory activities associated with Teacher and Student Units. The project involved research groups at seven Italian universities and the materials have been trialled in high schools nation‐wide. This paper describes the experimental protocol for the use of these materials in pilot classes and the evaluation of student learning and teacher training results. The intervention was found to improve physics education at school praxis level and to promo…
