An architecture for autonomous agents exploiting conceptual representations

An architecture for autonomous agents is proposed that integrates the functional and the behavioral approaches to robotics. The integration is based on the introduction of a conceptual level, linking together a subconceptual, behavioral, level, and a linguistic level, encompassing symbolic representation and data processing. The proposed architecture is described with reference to an experimental setup, in which the robot task is that of building a significant description of its working environment. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. Converting Retirement Benefit into a Life Care Annuity with Graded Benefits: How Costly Would it Actually Be?

This paper deals with life care annuities, i.e. bundled products comprising a life annuity and long-term care insurance. It aims to assess the cost of converting retirement benefit into a life care annuity with graded benefits using a pre-existing public pay-as-you-go pension scheme. With this objective in mind, we present an actuarial method based on array calculus for valuing this type of life care annuity. The health dynamics of the annuitant rely on a reversible illness-death multistate framework. This report delineates a new clinical presentation of multiple benign spiradenoma (BS), a diffuse linear nevoid pattern. A 16-year-old girl, in otherwise good health, had many papulonodular lesions, varying in color from blue-gray to bright red, disposed linearly on the right half of her body, involving the periorbital region, cheek, lateral side of the neck, trunk, linea alba, right thigh, and leg. Almost 40% of global mortality is attributable to an unhealthy diet, and adolescents and young adults are particularly affected by growing obesity rates. How do (young) people conceptualize and judge the healthiness of foods and how are the judgments embedded in people’s mental representations of the food ecology? The immune system has important roles in limiting the spread of cancer and shaping the tumor microenvironment. Although the contributions of T helper 17 (Th17) cells (a subtype of CD4(+) T lymphocytes) to autoimmunity and allergy response are well known, their roles in cancer remain ambiguous. Despite adoptive transfer studies indicating that mouse Th17 cells support anticancer immunity, the Th17 cells that naturally infiltrate experimental tumors appear to have a tumor-promoting effect. Background & Aims Antiviral agents suppress hepatitis B virus (HBV) replication but do not clear the infection. A strong effector T-cell response is required to eradicate HBV, but this does not occur in patients with chronic infection. T cells might be directed toward virus-infected cells by expressing HBV-specific receptors and thereby clear HBV and help to prevent development of liver cancer. Cytomegaloviruses (CMVs) code for several proteins that inhibit the presentation of antigenic peptides to CD8 T cells. Although the molecular mechanisms of CMV interference with the major histocompatibility complex class I pathway are long understood, surprisingly little evidence exists to support a role in vivo. A double-negative (IgD−CD27−) B cell population is increased in the peripheral blood of elderly people

The T cell branch of the immune system has been extensively studied in the elderly and it is known that the elderly have impaired immune function, mainly due to the chronic antigenic load that ultimately causes shrinkage of the T cell repertoire and filling of the immunologic space with memory T cells. In the present paper, we describe the IgD(-)CD27(-) double-negative B cell population which (as we have recently described) is higher in the elderly. Most of these cells were IgG(+). CXCR5 identifies a subset of Vγ9Vδ2 T cells which secrete IL-4 and IL-10 and help B cells for antibody production

Abstract Vγ9Vδ2 T lymphocytes recognize nonpeptidic Ags and mount effector functions in cellular immune responses against microorganisms and tumors, but little is known about their role in Ab-mediated immune responses. We show here that expression of CXCR5 identifies a unique subset of Vγ9Vδ2 T cells which express the costimulatory molecules ICOS and CD40L, secrete IL-2, IL-4, and IL-10 and help B cells for Ab production. These properties portray CXCR5+Vγ9Vδ2 T cells as a distinct memory T cell subset with B cell helper function.
