Lo schermo trasparente : cinema e città

2022

Life of Krembegi according to Pierre Clastres

2010

Adaptive trial design: a general methodology for censored time to event data.

2008

Adaptive designs allow a clinical trial design to be changed according to interim findings without inflating type I error. The Inverse Normal method can be considered as an adaptive generalization of classical group sequential designs. The use of the Inverse Normal method for censored survival data was demonstrated only for the logrank statistic. However, the logrank statistic is inefficient in the presence of nuisance covariates affecting survival. We demonstrate, how the Inverse Normal method can be applied to Cox regression analysis. The required independence between test statistics of the different stages of the trial can be obtained by two different approaches. One is using the indepen…

An alternative perspective on “semantic P600” effects in language comprehension

2008

Abstract The literature on the electrophysiology of language comprehension has recently seen a very prominent discussion of “semantic P600” effects, which have been observed, for example, in sentences involving an implausible thematic role assignment to an argument that would be a highly plausible filler for a different thematic role of the same verb. These findings have sparked a discussion about underlying properties of the language comprehension architecture, as they have generally been viewed as a challenge to established models of language processing and specifically to the notion that syntax precedes semantics in the comprehension process. In this paper, we review the literature on se…

What Can Modularity of Mind Tell Us about the Semantics/Pragmatics Debate?

2010

In this paper I make connections between two domains of information, research on the semantics/pragmatics debate and on modularity of mind, in the hope that establishing connections and parallel structure may be fruitful in deepening knowledge of the interface between semantics and pragmatics. In particular I want to inquire if modularity of mind can help us move towards the resolution of important theoretical problems like Grice's circle, the cancellability of explicatures/implicatures, the analogy between perceptual enrichments and explicatures due to free enrichments, the routing problem for explicatures (do they strictly take input from implicatures?), and satisficing strategies in prag…

1. Recognition And Social Ontology: An Introduction

2011

One of Hegel's big ideas is that creatures with a self-conception are the subjects of developmental processes that exhibit a distinctive structure. Call a creature 'essentially self-conscious' if what it is for itself, its self- conception, is an essential element of what it is in itself. How something that is essentially self-conscious appears to itself is part of what it really is. This chapter shows how the tripartite account of erotic awareness can be used in a natural way to build a notion of recognition that satisfies these twin philosophical constraints on the interpretation of Hegel's notion of self-consciousness in terms of recognition. Doing so it clarifies the nature of the trans…
