How Populist Was David Cameron?
2016
The ‘rhetorical populism’ of the former prime minister's big society agenda may have waxed and waned, says Agnes Alexandre-Collier. But Cameron was an innovator of party management and governing practices whose focus on connecting with ‘the people’ transformed his party – but also supplied the means of his own downfall.
Tracking the Emergence of the Consonant Bias in Visual-Word Recognition: Evidence with Developing Readers
2014
Recent research with skilled adult readers has consistently revealed an advantage of consonants over vowels in visual-word recognition (i.e., the so-called "consonant bias"). Nevertheless, little is known about how early in development the consonant bias emerges. This work aims to address this issue by studying the relative contribution of consonants and vowels at the early stages of visual-word recognition in developing readers (2(nd) and 4(th) Grade children) and skilled adult readers (college students) using a masked priming lexical decision task. Target words starting either with a consonant or a vowel were preceded by a briefly presented masked prime (50 ms) that could be the same as t…
Jalapeno or jalapeño: Do diacritics in consonant letters modulate visual similarity effects during word recognition?
2020
AbstractPrior research has shown that word identification times to DENTIST are faster when briefly preceded by a visually similar prime (dentjst; i↔j) than when preceded by a visually dissimilar prime (dentgst). However, these effects of visual similarity do not occur in the Arabic alphabet when the critical letter differs in the diacritical signs: for the target the visually similar one-letter replaced prime (compare and is no more effective than the visually dissimilar one-letter replaced prime Here we examined whether this dissociative pattern is due to the special role of diacritics during word processing. We conducted a masked priming lexical decision experiment in Spanish using target…
Does consonant–vowel skeletal structure play a role early in lexical processing? Evidence from masked priming
2017
Published online: 02 November 2017 Is the specific consonant–vowel (CV) letter combination of a word a basic source of information for lexical access in the early stages of processing? We designed two masked priming lexical decision experiments to respond to this question by directly examining the role of CV skeletal structure in written-word recognition. To that aim, each target word was preceded by a one-letter different nonword prime that kept the same CV skeletal structure or not. We also included an identity prime as a control. Results showed faster word identification times in the CV congruent condition than in the CV incongruent condition when a consonant was replaced from the target…
Area-efficient FPGA-based FFT processor
2003
A novel architecture for computing the fast Fourier transform on programmable devices is presented. Main results indicate that the use of one CORDIC operator to perform the multiplication by all the ‘twiddle factors’ sequentially leads to an area saving up to 35% with respect to other cores.
Elementary Integration of Superelliptic Integrals
2021
Consider a superelliptic integral $I=\int P/(Q S^{1/k}) dx$ with $\mathbb{K}=\mathbb{Q}(\xi)$, $\xi$ a primitive $k$th root of unity, $P,Q,S\in\mathbb{K}[x]$ and $S$ has simple roots and degree coprime with $k$. Note $d$ the maximum of the degree of $P,Q,S$, $h$ the logarithmic height of the coefficients and $g$ the genus of $y^k-S(x)$. We present an algorithm which solves the elementary integration problem of $I$ generically in $O((kd)^{\omega+2g+1} h^{g+1})$ operations.
Reliable Propagation of Magnetic Domain Walls in Cross Structures for Advanced Multiturn Sensors
2017
[EN] We develop and analyze an advanced concept for a domain-wall-based sensing of rotations. Moving domain walls in n closed loops with n - 1 intersecting convolutions by rotating fields, we are able to sense n rotations. By combining loops with coprime numbers of rotations, we create a sensor system allowing for the total counting of millions of turns of a rotating applied magnetic field. We analyze the operation of the sensor and identify the intersecting cross structures as the critical component for reliable operation. Specifically, depending on the orientation of the applied field angle with the magnetization in the branches of the cross, a domain wall is found to propagate in an unwa…
Eta-eta' Photoproduction and the axial isoscalar neutral current coupling
1995
We show that coherentη andη′ photoproduction by means of the Primakoff Effect on the proton depends on the strange component of the neutral axial current coupling. We construct polarization asymmetries that are sensitive to this coupling through theγ−Z interference. Theη′ is not a Goldstone boson of a spontaneously broken chiral symmetry, but a phenomenological analysis of theη andη′ production through chiral perturbation theory allows to calculate the observables of interest. The polarized proton or polarized photon asymmetries are predicted to be close to 10−4 for −q 2∼0.1−0.5 GeV2.
Mining minerals and critical raw materials from bittern: Understanding metal ions fate in saltwork ponds
2022
Seawater represents a potential resource for raw materials extraction. Although NaCl is the most representative mineral extracted other valuable compounds such as Mg, Li, Sr, Rb and B and elements at trace level (Cs, Co, In, Sc, Ga and Ge) are also contained in this “liquid mine”. Most of them are considered as Critical Raw Materials by the European Union. Solar saltworks, providing concentration factors of up-to 20 to 40, offer a perfect platform for the development of minerals and metal recovery schemes taking benefit of the concentration and purification achieved along the evaporation saltwork ponds. However, the geochemistry of these elements in this environment has not been yet thoroug…
