Screening of a sugar beet (Beta vulgaris cv. Dita) cDNA library for clones able to confer osmotic tolerance to the osmosensitive gpd1 mutant of Saccharomyces cerevisiae identified a novel serine O-acetyltransferase (BvSAT; EC 2.3.1.30). This enzyme is involved in cysteine biosynthesis in plants and bacteria, producing O-acetylserine, which is converted into cysteine in a reaction catalysed by O-acetylserine sulphydrylase (EC 4.2.99.8). This pathway is not conserved in yeast, where cysteine is synthesized in a four-step pathway starting with homoserine and having O-acetylhomoserine, homocysteine and cystathionine as intermediates. The European Consortium "High-throughput analysis of single nucleotide polymorphisms for the forensic identification of persons--SNPforID", has performed a selection of candidate Y-chromosome single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for making inferences on the geographic origin of an unknown sample. From more than 200 SNPs compiled in the phylogenetic tree published by the Y-Chromosome Consortium, and looking at the population studies previously published, a package of 29 SNPs has been selected for the identification of major population haplogroups. Hypokalaemic periodic paralysis is a rare dominant inherited disease where a person suffers sudden falls of circulating potassium concentrations, producing muscle weakness and sometimes severe paralysis. Attacks can occur as frequently as several times a day or once in a year. The age of onset is usually adolescence but symptoms can appear as early as 10 years of age. Muscle weakness can compromise vital functions such as breathing or swallowing and heart arrhythmias are also frequent during attacks. WISPs (Wnt-induced secreted proteins) are members of the CCN (CTGF/Cyr61/Nov) family involved in fibrotic disorders and tumorigenesis. They have a typical structure composed of four conserved cysteine-rich modular domains, but variants of CCN members lacking one or more modules, generated by alternative splicing or gene mutations, have been described in various pathological conditions. La comedia Grassandora de Juan Uceda de Sepúlveda, posiblemente fue impresa un poco antes de 1540. Esta comedia está compuesta con coplas de cinco versos de pie quebrado al estilo de Naharro, pero con división en cuatro jornadas, lo que la distancia de la clasica división horaciana. Por su temática, la obra es otro intento más de trasplantar la comedia humanística al teatro representable, lo que denominamos como comedia urbana de la primera mitad del Quinientos. Utiliza un Introito muy fiel al modelo de Torres Naharro; el argumento es casi celestinesco, con criados como Calfurnio y Ródano, medio rufianes que mueren trágicamente por la misma razón que Pármeno y Sempronio en La Celestina:
Characterizations of adenovirus type 41 isolates from children with acute gastroenteritis in Japan, Vietnam, and Korea.

ABSTRACT Genetic and antigenic characterizations of 70 strains of adenovirus type 41 (Ad41), isolated between 1998 and 2001 from children in Japan, Vietnam, and Korea, were done by DNA restriction enzyme (RE) analysis, sequencing analysis, and monoclonal antibody (MAb)-based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Eight genome types were observed in the present study, among which D25, D26, D27, and D28 were novel genome types. These eight genome types were divided into two genome-type clusters (GTCs) based on phylogenetic analysis of the hypervariable regions (HVRs) of the hexon.
