Geochronological evidence for Archaean and Palaeoproterozoic polymetamorphism in the Central Zone of the Limpopo Belt, South Africa

2018

Abstract The Central Zone of Limpopo Belt is a polymetamorphic and complexly deformed Precambrian terrane whose tectonic evolution is still uncertain because details on the timing of its evolution are not well established. We report zircon ages for newly discovered rocks in the Central Zone which document three distinct high-grade tectono-metamorphic events at 3.22, 2.62 and 2.02 Ga. The youngest of these has been well established, but the older two events were so far largely based only on rare zircon overgrowth rims. Most of our samples were collected from a large enclave in the 2.61 Ga Bulai pluton and constitute a strongly deformed, brecciated high-grade assemblage of supracrustal rocks,…

AnMBR, reclaimed water and fertigation: Two case studies in Italy and Spain to assess economic and technological feasibility and CO2 emissions within…

2020

[EN] The use of anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) technology on urban wastewater can help to alleviate droughts, by reusing the water and nutrients embedded in the effluent in agriculture (fertigation) in line with Circular Economy principles. The combination of AnMBR and fertigation reduces CO2 emissions due to the organic matter valorization and the partial avoidance of mineral fertilizer requirements. However, both AnMBR and fertigation still face technological and regulatory barriers that need to be overcome. These bottlenecks were tackled within the first Innovation Deal approved by the European Commission in 2016, and gave rise to several case studies on water reuse systems. The r…

Sorted deduplication: How to process thousands of backup streams

2016

The requirements of deduplication systems have changed in the last years. Early deduplication systems had to process dozens to hundreds of backup streams at the same time while today they are able to process hundreds to thousands of them. Traditional approaches rely on stream-locality, which supports parallelism, but which easily leads to many non-contiguous disk accesses, as each stream competes with all other streams for the available resources. This paper presents a new exact deduplication approach designed for processing thousands of backup streams at the same time on the same fingerprint index. The underlying approach destroys the traditionally exploited temporal chunk locality and cre…

Resource-efficient hardware implementation of a neural-based node for automatic fingerprint classification

2017

Modern mobile communication networks and Internet of Things are paving the way to ubiquitous and mobile computing. On the other hand, several new computing paradigms, such as edge computing, demand for high computational capabilities on specific network nodes. Ubiquitous environments require a large number of distributed user identification nodes enabling a secure platform for resources, services and information management. Biometric systems represent a useful option to the typical identification systems. An accurate automatic fingerprint classification module provides a valuable indexing scheme that allows for effective matching in large fingerprint databases. In this work, an efficient em…

Usability analysis of a novel biometric authentication approach for android-based mobile devices

2014

Mobile devices are widely replacing the standard personal computers thanks to their small size and user-friendly use. As a consequence, the amount of information, often confidential, exchanged through these devices is raising. This makes them potential targets of malicious network hackers. The use of simple passwords or PIN are not sufficient to provide a suitable security level for those applications requiring high protection levels on data and services. In this paper a biometric authentication system, as a running Android application, has been developed and implemented on a real mobile device. A system test on real users has been also carried out in order to evaluate the human-machine int…

Improvement of Fingerprint Sensor Reading Using FPGA Devices

2008

In order to realize fingerprint recognition system in real time environment, we describe in this paper signal controller to read fingerprint sensor generated in FPGA devices. Basically this signal is generated using state machine. The simulation result for behavioral simulation and signal generation read by logic analyzer are presented in this paper. Initialization and reading time for 76800 pixels are 50.99 mS. It is faster than fingerprint sensor using USB connection, which is more than 250 ms.

Robotized semiautomatic motorcycle transmission development. Electronic and software design

2017

In this paper, we propose an electrical design (implemented on a PCB board) and an accompanying software design for controlling the automatic gear change. The designs complement the mechanical solutions developed in Part 1. The paper also analyses the issues encountered during the intermediate steps of the development of the electronic module, which is expected to be small and adaptable enough to be installed on a motorcycle without changing its ergonomics. The control software runs on the Arduino Nano board and is built as a state machine with one idle state, five active states that cover different stages of the gear change and one error state for preventing malfunctions in case of an unex…

Biešu sulas koncentrāta ietekme uz futbolistu fiziskajām darbaspējām atkārtotas sprinta slodzes laikā

2021

Pēdējās desmitgades laikā nitrātu (NO3-) un to metabolītu labvēlīgā ietekme uz augstas intensitātes intervāla veida slodzi bijusi aprakstīta dažādos uztura pētījumos (Bailey et.al. 2012, Jones et.al. 2018). Darba mērķis bija novērtēt, kā biešu sulas koncentrāts, kas ir bagātīgs NO3- avots, spēj uzlabot sportistu spējas veikt atkārtotus, maksimālas intensitātes sprintus. Pētījumā piedalījās 7 Rīgas futbola skolas audzēknes vecumā no 15 līdz 22 gadiem. Dalībniecēm pētījuma laikā bija divas testēšanas dienas - kontroles variants un eksperimentālais variants, kur pētāmās personas veica maksimālas intensitātes 10 atkārtotu sprintu testu, kurš bija 20 m garš skriešanas intervāls, pēc kura sekoja …

Metasurfaces for colour printing

2014

We present a theoretical analysis and experimental evidences of metasurfaces based on particle resonators that achieve bright-field colour prints. We created pixels that support individual colours, miniaturized and juxtaposed at the optical diffraction limit. Different strategies are followed to offer the flexibility of using both transmitting and epi (reflective) white light sources. We discuss their potential applications in large-volume colour printing via nanoimprint lithography.

Laser-Induced Fluorescence Imaging of Paper Surfaces

1993

Laser-induced fluorescence imaging has been used to study the microstructure of paper surfaces. Pulses from a XeCl-excimer laser, 10 ns in duration at 308 nm, were used for excitation, and fluorescence was collected at 420 nm. The excitation spot diameter was approximately 20 µm, and the sampling interval 0.15 mm. Within an area of 5*5 mm2, 1023 sampling points were recorded to generate 3D fluorescence maps of paper surfaces. Papers containing fluorescence whitening agents (FWAs) gave the highest average fluorescence signals. Coated papers with no FW As show weaker signals than the base sheet. For some thirty different paper samples, an obvious correlation between the amount of coating and…
