Relationship between muscular extensibility, strength and stability and the transmission of impacts during fatigued running
2020
The aim was to analyse the relationship between isokinetic strength, dynamic stability, muscular extensibility and impacts transmission during fatigued running. Low- and high-frequency impacts related to body movements and the severity of impacts, respectively were assessed in 17 male recreational runners, before and after a treadmill running fatigue protocol, using a triaxial accelerometry system. High-frequency impacts in the tibia were negatively correlated to the knee angle at which the quadriceps peak torque was reached (p = 0.014), and also to the extensibility of the hamstrings and soleus (p = 0.001 and p = 0.023, respectively). The increases of high-frequency impacts in tibia caused…
Improving the Turn-On Time of Light-Emitting Electrochemical Cells without Sacrificing their Stability
2010
The luminance, efficiency, and turn-on time of ionic iridium complex-based light-emitting electrochemical cells can be improved by inserting an ionic liquid with high intrinsic conductivity. This results in a device in which the decrease in turn-on time is achieved while maintaining the stability.
Very low instability threshold in a three-level laser model with incoherent optical pumping
1997
Abstract The stability properties of a laser model based on a closed three-level atomic scheme with incoherent optical pumping are studied. Unexpectedly, the instability threshold can be very low approaching the lasing threshold for large unsaturated gain values.
Cu cluster shell structure at elevated temperatures
1991
Equilibrium structures of small (3--29)-atom Cu clusters are determined by simulated annealing, and finite-temperature ensembles are simulated by Monte Carlo techniques using the effective-medium theory for the energy calculation. Clusters with 8, 18, and 20 atoms are found to be particularly stable. The equilibrium geometrical structures are determined and found to be determined by a Jahn-Teller distortion, which is found to affect the geometry also at high temperatures. The ``magic'' clusters retain their large stability even at elevated temperatures.
Numerical study of blow-up and dispersive shocks in solutions to generalized Korteweg–de Vries equations
2015
Abstract We present a detailed numerical study of solutions to general Korteweg–de Vries equations with critical and supercritical nonlinearity, both in the context of dispersive shocks and blow-up. We study the stability of solitons and show that they are unstable against being radiated away and blow-up. In the L 2 critical case, the blow-up mechanism by Martel, Merle and Raphael can be numerically identified. In the limit of small dispersion, it is shown that a dispersive shock always appears before an eventual blow-up. In the latter case, always the first soliton to appear will blow up. It is shown that the same type of blow-up as for the perturbations of the soliton can be observed whic…
Further experiences on unsteady seepage flow
1973
The present paper describes the results of a study on the unsteady flow in a horizontal homogeneous filter, which is accomplished when the level of the reservoir that recharges the filter is instantly drawn up. This study was carried out at the University of Palermo Institute of Hydraulics as a part of a research program concerning artificial recharge of ground water and the geotechnical problems involving the stability of porous media subject to the variations of surrounding pressures. A numerical procedure, aiming at solving the equation of Boussinesq by a finite difference method, was adopted and an electronic computer was used. A Hele-Shaw filter model was used to carry out several expe…
Sensitivity Maps of the Hilbert-Schmidt Independence Criterion
2018
Abstract Kernel dependence measures yield accurate estimates of nonlinear relations between random variables, and they are also endorsed with solid theoretical properties and convergence rates. Besides, the empirical estimates are easy to compute in closed form just involving linear algebra operations. However, they are hampered by two important problems: the high computational cost involved, as two kernel matrices of the sample size have to be computed and stored, and the interpretability of the measure, which remains hidden behind the implicit feature map. We here address these two issues. We introduce the sensitivity maps (SMs) for the Hilbert–Schmidt independence criterion (HSIC). Sensi…
Robust reliable control of uncertain discrete impulsive switched systems with state delays
2013
Published version of an article in the journal: Mathematical Problems in Engineering. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2013/197819 Open access This paper is concerned with the problem of robust reliable control for a class of uncertain discrete impulsive switched systems with state delays, where the actuators are subjected to failures. The parameter uncertainties are assumed to be norm-bounded, and the average dwell time approach is utilized for the stability analysis and controller design. Firstly, an exponential stability criterion is established in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Then, a state feedback controller is constructed for the underlyin…
Bayesian estimation of edge orientations in junctions
1999
Abstract Junctions, defined as those points of an image where two or more edges meet, play a significant role in many computer vision applications. Junction detection is a widely treated problem, and some detectors can provide even the directions of the edges that meet in a junction. The main objective of this paper is the precise estimation of such directions. It is supposed that the junction point has been previously found by some detector. Also, it is assumed that samples, possibly noisy, of orientations of the edges found in a circular window surrounding the point are available. A mixture of von Mises distributions is assumed for these data, and then a Bayesian methodology is applied to…
