Cryptogein-Induced Anion Effluxes

2014

Anion effluxes are amongst the earliest reactions of plant cells to elicitors of defence responses. However, their properties and their role in disease resistance remain almost unknown. We previously demonstrated that cryptogein, an elicitor of tobacco defence responses, induces a nitrate (NO(3) (-)) efflux. This efflux is an early prerequisite to the cryptogein-triggered hypersensitive response (HR). Here, we analyzed the electrophysiological properties of the elicitor-mediated NO(3) (-) efflux and clarified the mechanisms through which it contributes to cell death. Application of the discontinuous single electrode voltage-clamp technique in tobacco cells elicited with cryptogein enabled u…

Impact of Localized Microwave Hyperthermia on the Oxygenation Status of Malignant Tumors

1982

Considerable insight into the mechanisms of heat induced cell death in vitro has been gained during recent years (for reviews see 1–3). Besides the direct cell killing effect of heat, many microenvironmental or milieu factors seem to play an important role during heat treatment of solid tumors in vivo, such that a preferential effect of hyperthermia on tumors has been postulated for the in situ conditions. Environmental factors affecting the tumor milieu, such as tissue oxygen partial pressures, pH values, glucose (?) and lactate levels, nutrient supply and drainage of wastes, have thus become a subject of topical interest.

Evaluation of OSA API's for 3rd party developers of Telco-services

2002

Masteroppgave i informasjons- og kommunikasjonsteknologi 2002 - Høgskolen i Agder, Grimstad Changes in business models introduce new actors to the telecom business. A set of new demands occurs and to handle this, a technical enabler like OSA is needed. Telenor R&D, which often provides Telco services in research projects, must form an opinion concerning this framework. Thus an evaluation of OSA is inquired. This thesis presents an introduction and evaluations of the OSA framework, further, a closer look at two of the OSA API’s (User Status and Terminal Capabilities) are made. To enhance the evaluation, Youngster has been utilized as an example of where the OSA framework can be used. An impl…

Training programme for novice physical activity instructors using Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility (TPSR) model : a programme development …

2021

Previous research indicates that programmes employing Hellison?s Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility (TPSR) model in physical activity have had a positive impact on youth development by increasing participants? positive values, autonomy, life skills, and prosocial behaviour. Despite encouraging results of the effects of TPSR-based programmes, there remains lack of research on the effective content of these programmes, and their implementation and evaluation. The current protocol article describes the development of a TPSR-based instructor training programme and a plan for an intervention study in which novice instructors learn to understand and apply the TPSR model in practice. The …

Inflammation as a therapeutic target in acute ischemic stroke treatment.

2009

Animal models of focal ischaemia induced by middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) provide most evidence for cellular inflammatory responses in stroke. Permanent MCAO results in a modest neutrophil infiltration at 24 h after ischaemia, predominantly around arterial vessels at the margins of infarction, whereas MCAO with subsequent reperfusion is associated with substantial infiltration by neutrophils throughout the entire infarct. Several studies show that C-reactive protein (CRP), an inflammatory marker, is associated with stroke outcomes and future vascular events. Several drugs, especially hydroxymethylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase inhibitors (statins), have been demonstrated to reduce …

On Keyword-Based Ad-Hoc Querying of Hospital Data Stored in Semistar Data Ontologies

2018

Abstract This paper sketches a possible solution to the problem of the currently growing necessity in various domains for domain experts to be able to query the database of the organization in a convenient manner. The paper focuses on the domain of hospital management where the normal practice is to involve a programmer as an intermediary between the managers and the database. This is an error-prone and cumbersome solution. The decision-making process of domain experts would hugely benefit if they could retrieve the information from the database themselves. There have been attempts to develop natural language-based query languages for this exact purpose, but the ultimate goal of the simplic…

Caspase-2 is an initiator caspase responsible for pore-forming toxin-mediated apoptosis

2012

Bacterial pathogens modulate host cell apoptosis to establish a successful infection. Pore-forming toxins (PFTs) secreted by pathogenic bacteria are major virulence factors and have been shown to induce various forms of cell death in infected cells. Here we demonstrate that the highly conserved caspase-2 is required for PFT-mediated apoptosis. Despite being the second mammalian caspase to be identified, the role of caspase-2 during apoptosis remains enigmatic. We show that caspase-2 functions as an initiator caspase during Staphylococcus aureus alpha-toxin- and Aeromonas aerolysin-mediated apoptosis in epithelial cells. Downregulation of caspase-2 leads to a strong inhibition of PFT-mediate…

Apoptosis and ageing.

1998

Stimulation of T cells from aged individuals leads to different kinds and/or size of responses if compared with the responses of T cells obtained from young individuals. In fact elderly is associated with a progressive decline of immune response besides an increasing incidence of autoimmune phenomena. These differences might be the result of modified cellular mechanisms controlling the immune system in the course of ageing. The apoptotic deletion of activated T cells has been proposed as the key mechanism to maintain T cell homeostasis, and in this respect CD95 (Fas antigen) seems to play a major role in this course of events. In this study we show that just collected lymphocytes from old s…

: Opinions of involved People and external Assessment : a Comparison in the Framework of an after school Programme

2002

This article confronts two ordinary approaches towards assessment process in education. In order to assess the effectiveness of a "study support", the first approach focuses on the opinions of involved people while the second one uses some statistical indicators. The comparison has been drawn up both on assessment tools and results (i.e; gaining a place in the programme, school achievement). The main result shows that those two approaches lead to opposite results and it strongly questions the validity of the assessment and the way people who are involved in education use it.
