Regularization operators for natural images based on nonlinear perception models.

2006

Image restoration requires some a priori knowledge of the solution. Some of the conventional regularization techniques are based on the estimation of the power spectrum density. Simple statistical models for spectral estimation just take into account second-order relations between the pixels of the image. However, natural images exhibit additional features, such as particular relationships between local Fourier or wavelet transform coefficients. Biological visual systems have evolved to capture these relations. We propose the use of this biological behavior to build regularization operators as an alternative to simple statistical models. The results suggest that if the penalty operator take…

Epigenetic regulation of stemness maintenance in the neurogenic niches

2015

In the adult mouse brain, the subventricular zone lining the lateral ventricles and the subgranular zone in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus are two zones that contain neural stem cells (NSCs) with the capacity to give rise to neurons and glia during the entire life of the animal. Spatial and temporal regulation of gene expression in the NSCs population is established and maintained by the coordinated interaction between transcription factors and epigenetic regulators which control stem cell fate. Epigenetic mechanisms are heritable alterations in genome function that do not involve changes in DNA sequence itself but that modulate gene expression, acting as mediators between the environ…

Multiplex RT-PCR Expression Analysis of Developmentally Important Genes in Individual Mouse Preimplantation Embryos and Blastomeres1

2009

We have developed a microfluidic chip-based qualitative assay for sensitive (10 RNA copies) detection of multiple transcripts in single cells. We determined the expression patterns of 17 developmentally important genes and isoforms in individual mouse preimplantation embryos from superovulated matings and blastomeres. The ubiquitously expressed histone variant H3f3a and the transcription factor Pou5f1 generated mRNA-derived products in all analyzed (1-cell, 2-cell, 4-cell, and morula stage) embryos and in all analyzed blastomeres from 16-cell embryos, indicating a uniform reactivation of pluripotency gene expression during mouse preimplantation development. In contrast, mRNA expression of d…

Role of non-coding RNAs as biomarkers of deleterious cardiovascular effects in sepsis.

2021

The mechanisms occurring during sepsis that produce an increased risk of cardiovascular (CV) disease (CVD) are poorly understood. Even less information exists regarding CV dysfunction as a complication of sepsis, particularly for sepsis-induced cardiomyopathy. However, recent research has demonstrated that non-coding RNAs, including microRNAs, long non-coding RNAs, and circular RNAs, play a crucial role in genetic reprogramming, gene regulation, and inflammation during the development of CVD. Here we describe experimental findings showing the importance of non-coding RNAs mediating relevant mechanisms underlying CV dysfunction after sepsis, so contributing to sepsis-induced cardiomyopathy. …

Evaluating the feasibility of the Italian version of the computerized interactive remediation of cognition training for schizophrenia (circuits)

2020

Background: Circuits is a computerized cognitive remediation program for individuals with schizophrenia. this study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of the italian version of circuits. MethODs: Feasibility was measured through ad-hoc questionnaires in a non-clinical sample (N.=30; target-score 70%; study 1); in patients with schizophrenia (N.=5; target-score 60%; study 2) and cr therapists (N.=3; target-score 60%; study 2). study 3 was a pilot study investigating: 1) enrolment, compliance, and retention rates; 2) satisfaction; 3) potential post-treatment and follow-up improvements in patients with schizophrenia (N.=20). these results were used to estimate sample size and feasibility for a …

Anatomy of Trading Rules

2017

This key chapter presents a methodology for examining how the trading signal in a moving average rule is computed. Then using this methodology the chapter examines the computation of trading signals in all moving average rules and investigates the commonalities and differences between the rules. The main conclusion that can be drawn from this study is that the computation of the trading indicator in every rule, based on either one or multiple moving averages, can equivalently be interpreted as the computation of a single weighted moving average of price changes. The analysis presented in this chapter uncovers the anatomy of moving average trading rules, provides very useful insights about p…

The Algorithm of a Game-Based System in the Relation between an Operator and a Technical Object in Management of E-Commerce Logistics Processes with …

2021

Machine learning (ML) is applied in various logistic processes utilizing innovative techniques (e.g., the use of drones for automated delivery in e-commerce). Early challenges showed the insufficient drones’ steering capacity and cognitive gap related to the lack of theoretical foundation for controlling algorithms. The aim of this paper is to present a game-based algorithm of controlling behaviours in the relation between an operator (OP) and a technical object (TO), based on the assumption that the game is logistics-oriented and the algorithm is to support ML applied in e-commerce optimization management. Algebraic methods, including matrices, Lagrange functions, systems of differential e…

Cloud Infrastructure for Skin Cancer Scalable Detection System

2018

Skin cancer diagnostics is one of the medical areas where early diagnostic allows achieving patients’ high survival rate. Typically, skin cancer diagnostic is performed by dermatologist, since the amount of such specialists is limited, mortality rate is high [1]. By creating the low cost and easy to use diagnostic device, it is possible to bring skin cancer diagnostic to primary care physicians and allow to check much more persons and diagnose skin cancer on the early stages. There are several existing devices, that provide skin cancer diagnostics [2]. Most of them process the skin images locally and have limited diagnostic capabilities; some of them send images to dermatologists for manual…

Was King Arthur a King by Definition?

1988

Current research in knowledge representation distinguishes between descriptional and assertional interpretations of semantic nets. This paper explores theoretical and applicative problems, which arise from that distinction in a historic domain. A prolog implementation of KL-ONE is used as a vehicle to compare the various alternatives available to represent knowledge related to single elements of the domain insertion or not of this knowledge in semantic nets in their descriptional sense. The final section of the paper discusses the problem in relation to the theories concerning the functioning of proper names from a logical and philosophical point of view.

Economic and Technical Efficiency of Drinking Water Systems: An Empirical Approach for Spain

2009

The objective of this paper is to analyze the efficiency of drinking water systems. Efficient performance, both in technical and economic terms guarantee minimum water losses in the network and reduced tariffs for the users. An analytical benchmarking methodology based on non-radial measures considering water losses as undesirable output gives us an efficiency indicator for each input used in the water supply process. These indicators, obtained by means of mathematical programming techniques, are used to rank suppliers' activity. The relation between the efficiency in the activity of the companies and the establishment of different tariffs is also analyzed. An empirical application is carry…
