An Object-Oriented Approach to Discrete-Event Simulation Applied to Underground Railway Systems

1999

This paper describes the implementation of an object-oriented simulator that supports the determination of timetables and the design of on-line control policies for underground rail way systems. The simulator has been developed on the basis of a new approach to object- oriented modelling. Such an approach has been used to design a development tool that supports the generation of simulation codes and is able to automatically define the skeleton of a code.

CIGS PV Module Characteristic Curves Under Chemical Composition and Thickness Variations

2014

This paper analyzes how the electrical characteristics of a CIGS photovoltaic module are affected by the chemical composition and by the thickness variations of the CIGS absorber. The electrical characteristics here considered are the short circuit current, the open circuit voltage, the efficiency and the power peak. The chemical composition is varied by tuning the ratio between gallium and indium. This analysis has been performed by means of the wxAMPS software, developed by the University of Illinois. The above variations have been taken into account on a PV module made of 72 cells. This analysis has been carried out employing a PV module mathematical model developed and implemented by th…

A GRASP algorithm for the container stowage slot planning problem

2016

This work presents a generalization of the Slot Planning Problem which raises when the liner shipping industry needs to plan the placement of containers within a vessel (stowage planning). State-of-the-art stowage planning relies on a heuristic decomposition where containers are first distributed in clusters along the vessel. For each of those clusters a specific position for each container must be found. Compared to previous studies, we have introduced two new features: the explicit handling of rolled out containers and the inclusion of separations rules for dangerous cargo. We present a novel integer programming formulation and a Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedure (GRASP) to solv…

Determination of Technological Forces in the Incremental Forming Process

2013

The paper presents a joint theoretical and experimental approach to determine the technological forces within the asymmetric single point incremental forming ASPIF process, based upon a theoretical model, image processing and data acquisition. The first step of this approach was to develop a theoretical model of the forces within the process, based upon the model of a mechanical feed drive of a CNC milling machine. By means of this model, relationships between the resistant torque at the motor spindle level and the technological force on the movement axis could be determined. Using an image processing method, which allowed the user to extract information within the machines operator panel a…

An Optimal Monitoring Program for Obtaining Voltage Sag System Indexes

2006

This paper presents a meter placement method for voltage sags monitoring in large transmission systems. An integer programming-based modeling is proposed for choosing the locations of power quality meters. A branch-and-bound-type algorithm is used to solve the optimization problem. A large transmission network is used to validate the method. Stochastic assessment of voltage sags is applied to the test network to obtain simulated monitoring results. Voltage sags system indexes are calculated from monitoring programs designed according to the optimization method. Comparisons with the system indexes obtained from a full monitoring program show the applicability of the method.

A Methodology for the Design of MOS Current-Mode Logic Circuits

2010

In this paper, a design methodology for the minimization of various performance metrics of MOS Current-Mode Logic (MCML) circuits is described. In particular, it allows to minimize the delay under a given power consumption, the power consumption under a given delay and the power-delay product. Design solutions can be evaluated graphically or by simple and effective automatic procedures implemented within the MATLAB environment. The methodology exploits the novel concepts of crossing-point current and crossing-point capacitance. A useful feature of it is that it provides the designer with useful insights into the dependence of the performance metrics on design variables and fan-out capacitan…

CHANGES OCCURRED IN A PORCELAIN FACTORY DUE TO QUALITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM IMPLEMENTATION

2019

The issues approach in this research show the benefits of the implementation of ISO 9001 standard in different companies as well as the importance of certain criteria with respect to customer satisfaction and confidence. This standard specifies requirements for a quality management system and it is based on a number of quality management principles including a strong customer focus, the motivation and implication of top management, the process approach and continual improvement. The criteria taken into account help to improve the quality management system of the organization. The purpose of this paper is to identify the changes due to the implementation of a quality management system based …

A combined multi-criteria approach to support FMECA analyses: A real-world case

2018

[EN] The paper proposes an approach that combines reliability analyses and multi-criteria decision methods to optimize maintenance activities of complex systems. A failure mode, effects, and criticality analysts (FMECA) is initially performed and the fuzzy TOPSIS (FTOPSIS) method is then applied to rank previously identified failure modes. For prioritization, failure modes are assessed against three evaluation criteria that differ from those traditionally involved in risk priority number (RPN) computation (i.e. severity, occurrence and detection). Two criteria refer to the maintenance management reflecting the operational time taken by the maintenance activity performed after the occurrence…

A distributed architecture for autonomous navigation of robots

2002

The paper shows a distributed architecture for autonomous robot navigation. The architecture is based on three modules that are implemented on separate and interacting agents: the target recognizer, the obsta90cle evaluator and the planner. An adaptive genetic algorithm has been studied to identify mechanisms for reaching the target and for manipulating the 2-directions of the robot; the distributed architecture has been embedded in the DAISY (Distributed Architecture for Intelligent System). Experiments have been carried out using a LEGO intelligent brick.

Design, sizing and set up of a specific low cost electronic load for PV modules characterization

2013

In this paper, the design, sizing and set-up of a specific low cost electronic load, based on a DC-DC step-down converter, suitable for the PV module I - V characteristic curves determination, is described. In particular, for its set up, a low cost and user friendly micro-controller has been employed in order to generate the PWM signal. The measures carried out connecting the electronic load prototype to a commercial PV module are here presented and discussed. The conceived electronic load has allowed the determination of 80% of the PV module characteristic curves in 2 s. This low measurement time, lower than the time intervals in which weather conditions may change, allows to assume as con…
