Apocalyptic Quest in Thomas Pynchon’s <i>V</i>. and Roberto Bolaño’s <i>2666</i>

2011

Chilean author Roberto Bolano’s last (posthumous) novel 2666 (2004) has some aspects intriguingly in common with Thomas Pynchon’s V. A full comparative analysis of these two novels would be a daunting task for two reasons. Pynchon’s V. has been so thoroughly analyzed that it is next to impossible to say anything new about it, whereas the novel of recently deceased Bolano (1953-2003) has not yet received due scholarly attention, and therefore there is scarcely any critical material to lean on or to take issue with.

Katsauksessa pohdimme kriittisen pedagogiikan mahdollisuuksia lisätä opettajaopiskelijoiden kykyä jäsentää yhteiskunnallisten ilmiöiden suhdetta kasvatukseen. Esimerkkinä käytämme Lapset elämänsä valtiaiksi -hanketta, jota Tampereen ammattikorkeakoulun sosionomikoulutuksessa on toteutettu Venäjällä ja Virossa. Siinä sosiokulttuurisen innostamisen avulla, opiskelijoiden oman osallistumisen kautta, pyritään luomaan solidaarisuuteen ja tasa-arvoon kurkottavia yksilöitä. Graphemic complexity and multiple print-to-sound associations in visual word recognition

Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, Nijmegen, The Netherlands It has recently been reported that words containing a multiletter grapheme are processed slower than are words composed of single-letter graphemes (Rastle & Coltheart, 1998; Rey, Jacobs, Schmidt-Weigand, & Ziegler, 1998). In the present study, using a perceptual identification task, we found in Experiment 1 that this graphemic complexity effect can be observed while controlling for multiple print-to-sound associations, indexed by regularity or consistency. Task-related variation in communication of mothers and their sons with learning disability

The purpose of the present study was to examine whether mother-child communication patterns vary as a function of the type of the task. Groups of learning disabled (LD=30) and normally achieving boys (NLD=30) were videotaped interacting with their mothers in two different tasks. The children were matched for age (8 to 11 year-olds) and for parent’s SES. The results indicated that the teaching task differentiated the groups more than did the story task. Academic character of the teaching task increased mothers’ task involvement in both groups. The Role of General and Selective Task Instructions on Students’ Processing of Multiple Conflicting Documents

This study was designed to test the role of general and selective task instructions when processing documents, which vary as regards trustworthiness and position toward a conflicting topic. With selective task instructions, we refer to concrete guidelines as how to read the texts and how to select appropriate documents and contents, in contrast to general task instructions. Sixty-one secondary school students were presented with four different conflicting documents in an electronic learning environment and were told to write an essay based on the information from the texts. Background: The effect of depression on decision-making is an important but still an unsettled issue. Although most studies have reported that clinically depressed participants show worse performance, there are also studies that have shown no or even positive effects. Project Education and Adams’ Theory of Equity

This work-in-progress paper in research category is concerned with students’ perceptions of justice in software engineering group projects. Taking a directed content analysis approach, the aim is to analyze the relevance of Adams’ theory of Equity for small-group project education. The analysis was applied to the data collected from a third-year project course in which students encounter an open-ended group assignment. The results indicate that the theory can serve as a useful framework that helps teachers to identify justice-related issues in project courses. On the other hand, it was concluded that special carefulness is advisable considering the simplicity of the theory. peerReviewed

Maternal homework assistance and children's task-persistent behavior in elementary school

Abstract The present study used a sample of 365 children to investigate the longitudinal associations between maternal homework assistance (i.e., help, monitoring, and autonomy granting) and children's task-persistent behavior in learning situations from grade 2 to grade 4 of elementary school. Also, the extent to which task-persistent behavior plays a role in the links between parental homework assistance and children's academic performance was examined. Depending on the hybridization target, FISH techniques show widely different levels of DNA resolution. Three-dimensional Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) can provide high-resolution insight into biomolecular distribution and pharmacokinetics. However, instrument availability and distribution is limited at present,and imaging times can be considerable. To evaluate the large array of novel agents which are becoming available,we find that storage phosphor-based in vivo imaging can provide an important,rapid-throughput transition from the traditional ex vivo sacrifice/gamma counting and autoradiography to full-time course SPECT.
