Quality of life improving after propranolol treatment in patients with Infantile Hemangiomas

2022

AbstractInfantile hemangiomas may affect the quality of life (QoL) of patients and their family members, as anxiety and worry may commonly occur in parents, also linked to the social adversion they experience. We underline the beneficial impact of oral propranolol therapy on QoL of patients with infantile hemangiomas (IH) and of their relatives. A specific questionnaire measuring QoL was administered to parents of IH patients at beginning and end of a treatment with oral propranolol. Different aspects were investigated: site of the lesion, age of patients at starting therapy, length of treatment, occurrence of adverse effects and persistence/recurrence of the vascular anomaly. In all cases …

Ion-exchange fibers and drugs: an equilibrium study

2001

The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanisms of drug binding into and drug release from cation-exchange fibers in vitro under equilibrium conditions. Ion-exchange groups of the fibers were weakly drug binding carboxylic acid groups (-COOH), strongly drug binding sulphonic acid groups (-SO(3)H), or combinations thereof. Parameters determining the drug absorption and drug release properties of the fibers were: (i) the lipophilicity of the drug (tacrine and propranolol are lipophilic compounds, nadolol is a relatively hydrophilic molecule), (ii) the ion-exchange capacity of the fibers, which was increased by activating the cation-exchange groups with NaOH, (iii) the ionic streng…

Kardiopulmonale Parameter bei Hyperthyreose

1999

Background Hyperthyroid patients often suffer from impaired exercise capacity with dyspnoea. Two well established, non-invasive methods were used to evaluate the influence of hyperthyroidism on cardiopulmonary function. Patients and methods In 42 patients with hyperthyroidism we performed spirometry and cardiopulmonary exercise testing before and after 7 days of propranolol therapy as well as in euthyroidism. Results In hyperthyroidism reduced vital capacity and 1-second capacity were observed (95.5 +/- 2.4% vs 102.6 +/- 1.5%; p = 0.0087; 89.4 +/- 2.3% vs 95.2 +/- 2.2%; p = 0.0179). No changes showed during beta-blockade. At the anaerobic threshold reduced tidal volume and enhanced respirat…

Topiramate in migraine prophylaxis

2006

Many of the drugs available for the prophylaxis of migraine never underwent rigorous placebo-controlled trials, and the effective drugs have side effects that are problematic in daily practice. Three double-blind studies involving more than 1500 patients (the largest clinical development program ever undertaken for migraine prophylaxis) consistently found topiramate, at doses of 100 and 200 mg/day, to be superior to placebo in migraine prophylaxis. Topiramate has demonstrated efficacy in reducing the frequency of migraines, producing a statistically significant effect at 1 month and maintaining effectiveness over more than 6 months. It is not associated with the side effects that may cause…

Application of molecularly imprinted polymers in supercritical fluid chromatography

2000

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), for the templates free base racemic propranolol and the L-enantiomer of phenylalanine anilide (L-PA), were investigated as stationary phases in supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC). Large retention differences were observed on the propranolol MIP for both the template molecule and the structural analogue metoprolol compared to that observed on the corresponding blank polymer. Mobile phase composition and solute concentration were found to affect this retention behaviour. The phenylalanine anilide MIP (L-PA MIP) was found to be enantioselective in SFC with stronger retention observed for the template enantiomer. Throughout the study, characteristic …

Simultaneous stimulation of growth hormone, adrenocorticotropin and cortisol with L‐dopa/L‐carbidopa and propranolol in children of short stature

2000

In 59 otherwise healthy children of short stature, the simultaneous response of growth hormone, cortisol and plasma adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) to L-dopa/L-carbidopa and propranolol at 45 and 90 min after administration were investigated. A growth hormone response of 10 microg/l or higher was considered positive. The definition of a positive cortisol response included either a hormone increase of at least 193 nmol/l or a peak hormone level of at least 497 nmol/l. The ACTH increase had to be fourfold above 11 pmol/l to be considered positive. In the 59 investigated children, the median basal growth hormone levels increased from 1.35 microg/l to 18.05 microg/l and 10.15 microg/l at 45 and 90 m…

Propranolol - stary lek i nowe zastosowania w leczeniu naczyniaków

2019

Accumulation and Adverse Effects of Metoprolol and Propranolol After Concurrent Administration of Cimetidine

1983

Pharmacokinetics of metoprolol, propranolol and atenolol were investigated in six healthy volunteers following 7 days of oral monotherapy with these drugs and after 7 days concurrent administration of each of these betareceptor antagonists with cimetidine. Application of cimetidine did not lead to any interaction with atenolol, whereas mean peak plasma levels of metoprolol were increased by 70%, and those of propranolol by 95% due to concurrent administration of cimetidine (p < 0.05). The AUC of the two last mentioned beta blockers behaved similarly (p < 0.05). Measurement of exercise-induced tachycardia on the 6th day of administration showed no differences between monotherapy with the bet…
