B‐Mode ultrasonography of the paranasal sinuses compared with CT findings

1992

Ultrasound as a diagnostic aid in the evaluation of the sinuses has been a controversial issue. Sensitivities have been reported from 29% to 100% and specificities from 55% to 99%. These wide variations in results from previous studies may have resulted from technical differences. However, the "gold standard" most often used for comparison has been a Water's view radiograph, which has been shown to correlate poorly with intraoperative and CT scan findings. To our knowledge, no one in the English language literature has evaluated sonography of the sinuses with computed tomography as the gold standard. In addition, evaluation of the ethmoid sinus has been neglected by previous studies that ha…

Efficacy of acupuncture for the prophylaxis of migraine: a multicentre randomised controlled clinical trial.

2006

Our aim was to assess the efficacy of a part-standardised verum acupuncture procedure, in accordance with the rules of traditional Chinese medicine, compared with that of part-standardised sham acupuncture and standard migraine prophylaxis with beta blockers, calcium-channel blockers, or antiepileptic drugs in the reduction of migraine days 26 weeks after the start of treatment. This study was a prospective, randomised, multicentre, double-blind, parallel-group, controlled, clinical trial, undertaken between April 2002 and July 2005. Patients who had two to six migraine attacks per month were randomly assigned verum acupuncture (n=313), sham acupuncture (n=339), or standard therapy (n=308). …

Micro-lightguide spectrophotometry as an intraoral monitoring method in free vascular soft tissue flaps.

2003

Abstract Purpose: The aim of this prospective study was to measure the hemoglobin oxygen saturation (HbO2%) and relative Hb concentration of free vascular soft tissue flaps using micro-lightguide spectrophotometry. The objective was to measure the normal range and topographic differences in HbO2% and rel. Hb conc. in tissue transfers before establishing this as a clinical method for monitoring perfusion and vitality. Patients and Methods: In 39 patients who had received free vascular soft tissue flaps (34 radial forearm flaps; 8 latissimus flaps) to cover defects after tumor surgery, the capillary HbO2% in transferred tissue was measured spectrophotometrically preoperatively at the donor si…

Evaluation of bleeding risk and measurement methods in dental patients

2010

Objective: The present study explores bleeding manifestations in routine dental surgical procedures, evaluates the influence of antithrombotic drugs upon bleeding risk, and validates the efficiency of a clinical method for the measurement of bleeding. Material and method: A prospective observational study was made involving a cohort of 99 patients in the setting of normal clinical practice, with the added conduction of prior hematological tests including baseline hemostasis and platelet function, based on a new method (Multiplate System®). For evaluation of the bleeding manifestations, a clinical method was selected that evaluates bleeding on the basis of its duration and the hemostatic mea…

Prevalence of Burnout Among Pain Medicine Physicians and Its Potential Effect upon Clinical Outcomes in Patients with Oncologic Pain or Chronic Pain …

2018

Objective To evaluate the prevalence of burnout among physicians treating patients with chronic pain and to assess the potential relationships between the presence of burnout and patients' clinical outcomes such as pain relief, satisfaction with pain control, and quality of life. Design An observational, prospective, and noncomparative study. Setting Pain medicine clinics. Subjects Physicians from medical departments involved in the management of chronic pain. Patients aged ≥18 years who exhibited moderate chronic pain lasting at least three months. Methods Physicians were evaluated with the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS). Patients were evaluated with the Charlson…

Physical activity in adolescence and smoking in young adulthood: a prospective twin cohort study.

2007

Aims  To control for familial confounds, we studied the association between adolescent physical activity and later smoking in twin siblings discordant for their baseline physical activity. Design and measurements  In this prospective population-based twin study, we asked whether persistent physical activity/inactivity in adolescence (assessed at 16, 17 and 18.5 years) predicted questionnaire-reported daily smoking at ages 22–27. Twins who, on the three baseline questionnaires, consistently reported frequent leisure physical activity (more than three times weekly) were classified as persistent exercisers, those who exercised less than three times monthly were called persistently inactive, ot…

Mortality in affective disorders.

2001

Abstract Background : To investigate the mortality rates in affective disorders due to unnatural and natural causes with respect to illness subtype and social–demographic features. Methods : Mortality data were determined from a prospective study of 354 outpatients with affective disorders during a follow-up period of 5 years. Death from natural and unnatural causes was compared to sex- and age-specific expectations in the general population. Standardized mortality rates (SMR) in diagnostic subgroups and the influence of social–demographic features were investigated. Results : The observed 30 deaths represented nearly three times (SMR, 2.9) the number expected on the basis of age- and sex-s…

Assessment of immunodeficiency scoring index performance in enterovirus/rhinovirus respiratory infection after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell tra…

2020

BACKGROUND: Enterovirus/rhinoviruses (EvRh) are the most common cause of respiratory virus infections in recipients of allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT).; OBJECTIVE: We sought to analyze the value of the immunodeficiency scoring index (ISI) in predicting lower respiratory tract disease (LRTD) progression and mortality in a prospective cohort of consecutive adult (> 16 years) allo-HSCT recipients with EvRh infection from December 1 2013 to December 1 2019 at two Spanish transplant centers.; RESULTS: We included 234 allo-HSCT recipients with 383 EvRh episodes. Out of 383 EvRh episodes, 98 (25%) had LRTD. Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified three independent fac…

Corneal thickness differences between sexes after oxybuprocaine eye drops.

2014

PURPOSE We aimed to analyze the corneal thickness (CT) values of female and male subjects before and after instillation of oxybuprocaine 0.4% anesthetic eye drops. METHODS The CT of 30 female subjects and 28 male subjects was measured using scanning-slit corneal topography (Orbscan Topography System II, Orbscan, Inc, Salt Lake City, UT). Measurements were carried out before and 3 minutes after the instillation of oxybuprocaine 0.4% eye drops. RESULTS The difference between the baseline values and those obtained after anesthesia ranged as follows: male subjects: central, -26 to +24 μm; superior, -24 to +23 μm; inferior, -19 to +20 μm; nasal, -25 to +30 μm; and temporal, -21 to +20 μm; female…

Dynamic posturography findings predict balance status in vestibular schwannoma patients.

2007

OBJECTIVE To test whether condition 5 score (C5S) and condition 6 score (C6S) of the sensory organization test of computerized dynamic platform posturography (CDPP) differ between vestibular schwannoma (VS) patients with and without vestibular symptoms. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective review of prospectively collected data. SETTING Tertiary academic referral center. PATIENTS Two hundred and sixteen consecutive patients with a histological diagnosis of a VS (103 women; 113 men; age range, 18-78 years; median, 54 years) who had been preoperatively evaluated by CDPP. A hundred and twelve patients had a history of vertigo, dizziness, and/or imbalance, and 104 patients had neither present nor past ve…
