Development of procedures for programmable proximity aperture lithography
2013
Abstract Programmable proximity aperture lithography (PPAL) with MeV ions has been used in Jyvaskyla and Chiang Mai universities for a number of years. Here we describe a number of innovations and procedures that have been incorporated into the LabView-based software. The basic operation involves the coordination of the beam blanker and five motor-actuated translators with high accuracy, close to the minimum step size with proper anti-collision algorithms. By using special approaches, such writing calibration patterns, linearisation of position and careful backlash correction the absolute accuracy of the aperture size and position, can be improved beyond the standard afforded by the repeata…
Risk of bone tumors in children and residential proximity to industrial and urban areas: New findings from a case-control study
2017
Few epidemiologic studies have explored risk factors for bone tumors in children, and the role of environmental factors needs to be analyzed. Our objective was to ascertain the association between residential proximity to industrial plants and urban areas and risk of bone tumors in children, taking into account industrial groups and toxic pollutants released. A population-based case-control study of childhood bone cancer in Spain was carried out, covering 114 incident cases obtained from the Spanish Registry of Childhood Tumors (between 1996 and 2011), and 684 controls individually matched by sex, year of birth, and autonomous region of residence. Distances from the subject's residences to …
Assessing the Histone Deacetylase Activity of SIRT6 in Primary Murine Hepatocytes via Proximity Ligation Assay
2016
Generation of primary cell culture of hepatocytes by mouse liver perfusion (MLP) combines the advantages of in vivo and in vitro models. It provides hepatocytes that grow under physiological conditions in mice, with the genotype of the whole organism or a specific gene knockout. In contrast to immortalized cell cultures, primary murine hepatocytes (pmHep) are non-cancerous cells with a limited lifespan but still amenable to classical in vitro methods such as treatment with drugs, small molecule inhibitors, and agonistic/antagonistic antibodies of surface receptors as well as transfection. One technique, which has gained popularity recently, is the analysis of protein-protein interactions by…
Association between residential proximity to environmental pollution sources and childhood renal tumors
2016
FI=3.835 (año 2016), Q1 Background: Few risk factors for childhood renal tumors are well established. While a small fraction of cases might be attributable to susceptibility genes and congenital anomalies, the role of environmental factors needs to be assessed. Objectives: To explore the possible association between residential proximity to environmental pollution sources (industrial and urban areas, and agricultural crops) and childhood renal cancer, taking into account industrial groups and toxic substances released. Methods: We conducted a population-based case-control study of childhood renal cancer in Spain, including 213 incident cases gathered from the Spanish Registry of Childhood T…
Moments of Goodness: An Analysis of Ethical and Educational Dimensions of the Terror Attack on Utøya, Norway (July 22, 2011)
2014
Published version of an article in the journal: Studies in Philosophy and Education. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11217-014-9452-1 The analysis is based on some moral experiences taking place during a terrorist attack on the Norwegian Labor Party’s youth camp on the island of Utøya (outside of Oslo) July 22, 2011, where 69 young people were killed and several seriously injured. After the attack many of the survivors told stories of how strangers spontaneous had helped and cared for each other. In the midst of the horror there occurred sudden “moments of goodness” or “points of light” that revealed hope for the persons involved, as well as for the society.…
Comunicare la ricerca. Il caso della Provide Communication Strategy
2022
Deception and abuse: Manifold Instances of Proxemic Violence against Sub-Saharan and Eastern-European Women-Immigrants In Sicily
2019
Over the past few decades and up until 2017, Sicily has hosted increasing numbers of African fugitives (ANCI et al., 2017) as well as migrants from Eastern Europe, especially after the entry of Romania into the European Union. The aim of the research was to analyse some of the role positions found in gender dynamics among migrants, throwing light on possible processes by which mechanisms of submission to and normalisation of gender based violence seem to have been internalised by these victims of proximity violence, emphasising the viscous links existing between vulnerability, resistance and resilience. Within this markedly multicultural context in Sicily, the researchers carried out a two-…
Interface transparency and proximity effect in Nb/Cu triple layers realized by sputtering and molecular beam epitaxy
2004
We have investigated, in the framework of the proximity effect theory, the interface transparency T between Nb and Cu in the case of high quality Nb/Cu trilayers fabricated by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and sputtering deposition techniques. The obtained T values do not seem to be strongly influenced by the fabrication methods but more by the intrinsic properties of the two metals; a slightly higher value for T has even been deduced for the MBE prepared samples. The proximity effect in these samples has also been studied in the presence of an external magnetic field. In the parallel configuration a significant shift towards lower values of the 2D–3D crossover temperature has been observed …
Fibroblast Growth Factor Receptor 1– 5-Hydroxytryptamine 1A Heteroreceptor Complexes and Their Enhancement of Hippocampal Plasticity
2011
Background The hippocampus and its 5-hydroxytryptamine transmission plays an important role in depression related to its involvement in limbic circuit plasticity. Methods The analysis was made with bioluminescence resonance energy transfer, co-immunoprecipitation, in situ proximity ligation assay, binding assay, in cell western and the forced swim test. Results Using bioluminescence resonance energy transfer analysis, fibroblast growth factor receptor 1 (FGFR1)-5-hydroxytryptamine 1A (5-HT1A) receptor complexes have been demonstrated and their specificity and agonist modulation characterized. Their presence based on co-immunoprecipitation and proximity ligation assay has also been indicated…
Processing the questionnaire: from the objectives to the formulation of the items to be included
2020
The PROVIDE project’s research involved, among many other commitments, assessing the training needs of the operators and stakeholders. These investigations actually permitted us to structure the training course (see chapter 2 above) and evaluate the training provided, by recourse to both ex-ante and ex-post assessments, and devise indicators useful for the formulation of the necessary questionnaires.
