Anthrylmethylamine functionalised mesoporous silica-based materials as hybrid fluorescent chemosensors for ATP

2005

A number of functionalised mesoporous solids containing anchored anthrylmethylamine groups have been prepared using different co-hydrolysis or grafting synthetic routes. The solids have been characterised using standard solid-state techniques. Solids with a low loading of the anthrylmethylamine probe show typical well defined and structured emission bands centred at ca. 415 nm. Addition of ATP to suspensions of these solids at pH 2.8 resulted in a quenching of the anthracene emission. These solids showed a cooperative effect that resulted in quite a remarkable improvement in ATP response with respect to the free anthrylmethylamine probe in solution. Certain prepared solids showed a remarkab…

First principles simulation of amorphous InSb

2013

Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations based on density functional theory have been performed to generate a model of amorphous InSb by quenching from the melt. The resulting network is mostly tetrahedral with a minor fraction ($10%$) of atoms in a fivefold coordination. The structural properties are in good agreement with available x-ray diffraction and extended x-ray-absorption fine structure data and confirm the proposed presence of a sizable fraction of homopolar In-In and Sb-Sb bonds whose concentration in our model amounts to about $20%$ of the total number of bonds.

The continuous cooling transformation (CCT) as a flexible tool to investigate polymer crystallization under processing conditions

2009

An experimental route for investigating polymer crystallization over a wide range of cooling rates (from 0.01 to 1000◦C/s) and pressures (from 0.1 to 40 MPa) is illustrated, using a method that recalls the approach adopted in metallurgy for studying structure development in metals. Two types of experimental setup were used, namely an apparatus for fast cooling of thin films (100–200 μm thick) at various cooling rates under atmospheric pressure and a device (based on a on-purpose modified injection molding machine) for quenching massive samples (about 1–2 cm3) under hydrostatic pressure fields. In both cases, ex situ characterization experiments were carried out to probe the resulting struct…

All-experimental values of self-quenching cross-sections for nf states (n=5-8) of potassium atoms

2007

All-experimental self-quenching cross-sections σ nf are reported for K(nf) states (n = 5, 6, 7, 8). The experiment was performed at varied temperatures of K vapour in a spectral cell. Time-resolved fluorescence was observed following pulsed step-wise excitation with dipole and quadrupole transitions K(4s) → K(4p) → K(nf). The values: σ 5f = 2.4 ± 1.7, σ 6f = 4.5±1.4, σ 7f = 8.1±1.8, and σ 8f = 18.2±3.0 (in units of 10−13 cm−1) were obtained from a Stern-Volmer-type plot.

Triplet stabilization for enhanced drug photorelease from sunscreen-based photocages

2021

[EN] Recently, sunscreen-based drug photocages have been introduced to provide UV protection to photoactive drugs, thus increasing their photosafety. Here, combined experimental and theoretical studies performed on a photocage based on the commercial UVA filter avobenzone (AB) and on the photosensitizing non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug ketoprofen (KP) are presented unveiling the photophysical processes responsible for the light-triggered release. Particular attention is paid to solvent stabilization of the drug and UV filter excited states, respectively, which leads to a switching between the triplet excited state energies of the AB and KP units. Most notably, we show that the stabiliz…

Colloidal Nanoplatelet/Conducting Polymer Hybrids: Excitonic And Material Properties

2016

WOS:000370678700053 Here we present the first account of conductive polymer/colloidal nanoplatelet hybrids. For this, we developed DEH-PPV-based polymers with two different anchor groups (sulfide and amine) acting as surfactants for CdSe nanoplatelets, which are atomically flat semiconductor nanocrystals. Hybridization of the polymers with the nanoplatelets in the solution phase was observed to cause strong photoluminescence quenching in both materials. Through steady-state photoluminescence and excitation spectrum measurements, photoluminescence quenching was shown to result from dominant exciton dissociation through charge transfer at the polymer/nanoplatelet interfaces that possess a sta…

Phasor-FLIM analysis of Thioflavin T self-quenching in Concanavalin amyloid fibrils

2020

The formation of amyloid structures has traditionally been related to human neurodegenerative pathologies and, in recent years, the interest in these highly stable nanostructures was extended to biomaterial sciences. A common method to monitor amyloid growth is the analysis of Thioflavin T fluorescence. The use of this highly selective dye, diffused worldwide, allows mechanistic studies of supramolecular assemblies also giving back important insight on the structure of these aggregates. Here we present experimental evidence of self-quenching effect of Thioflavin T in presence of amyloid fibrils. A significant reduction of fluorescence lifetime of this dye which is not related to the propert…

Understanding light-driven H 2 evolution through the electronic tuning of aminopyridine cobalt complexes

2017

A new family of cobalt complexes with the general formula [CoII(OTf)2(Y,XPyMetacn)] (1R,Y,XPyMetacn ¼ 1-[(4-X-3,5-Y-2-pyridyl)methyl]-4,7-dimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane, (X ¼ CN (1CN), CO2Et (1CO2Et), Cl (1Cl), H(1H), NMe2 (1NMe2)) where (Y ¼ H, and X ¼ OMe when Y ¼ Me (1DMM)) is reported. We found that the electronic tuning of the Y,XPyMetacn ligand not only has an impact on the electronic and structural properties of the metal center, but also allows for a systematic water-reduction-catalytic control. In particular, the increase of the electron-withdrawing character of the pyridine moiety promotes a 20-fold enhancement of the catalytic outcome. By UV-Vis spectroscopy, luminescence quenc…

A novel method for determination of inorganic polyphosphates using the fluorescent dye fura-2.

1997

A method for determining inorganic polyphosphate, which is based on the Mn2+-induced quenching of the fluorescence of the calcium indicator fura-2, is described. The effect of Mn2+ ions on fura-2 fluorescence is gradually abolished in the presence of increasing concentrations of polyphosphate; this allows the quantification both of synthetic polyphosphates and of the naturally occurring polymer isolated from tissues or cells. The described method has some advantages compared to conventional procedures for detection of polyphosphates based on the metachromatic effect on toluidine blue. It can be applied for the determination of pyrophosphate, tripolyphosphate and other short-chain polyphosph…

New Vocabulary for Bacterial Communication

2019

Abstract Quorum sensing (QS) is widely accepted as a procedure that bacteria use to converse. However, prevailing thinking places acyl homoserine lactones (AHLs) at the forefront of this communication pathway in Gram‐negative bacteria. With the advent of high‐throughput genomics and the subsequent influx of bacterial genomes, bioinformatics analysis has determined that the genes encoding AHL biosynthesis, originally discovered to be indispensable for QS (LuxI‐like proteins and homologues), are often absent in QS‐capable bacteria. Instead, the sensing protein (LuxR‐like proteins) is present with an apparent inability to produce any outgoing AHL signal. Recently, several signals for these Lux…
