An Enhanced Fear Appeal Rhetorical Framework: Leveraging Threats to the Human Asset Through Sanctioning Rhetoric
2015
Fear appeals, which are used widely in information security campaigns, have become common tools in motivating individual compliance with information security policies and procedures. However, empirical assessments of the effectiveness of fear appeals have yielded mixed results, leading IS security scholars and practitioners to question the validity of the conventional fear appeal framework and the manner in which fear appeal behavioral modeling theories, such as protection motivation theory (PMT), have been applied to the study of information security phenomena. We contend that the conventional fear appeal rhetorical framework is inadequate when used in the context of information security t…
Toward Understanding Contradictions in Enterprise System Implementations: Insights from a Case Study
2013
This chapter presents findings from a study of the implementation of an enterprise system in an organization. The implementation process is viewed from a dialectic perspective, which means thinking in terms of contradictions. This chapter raises the following research question: how can we understand contradictions in enterprise system (ES) implementations? To answer this question, an interpretive research approach was chosen. The empirical part is a longitudinal case study. The system was in this case an innovative combination of collaboration and information management technologies. The main contradiction studied in this case was between an as-is implementation of standard software and an …
Comprehension effects of signalling relationships between documents in search engines
2010
A key task for students learning about a complex topic from multiple documents on the web is to establish the existing rhetorical relations between the documents. Traditional search engines such as Google(R) display the search results in a listed format, without signalling any relationship between the documents retrieved. New search engines such as Kartoo(R) go a step further, displaying the results as a constellation of documents, in which the existing relations between pages are made explicit. This presentation format is based on previous studies of single-text comprehension, which demonstrate that providing a graphical overview of the text contents and their relation boosts readers' comp…
ProQuest datubāzes lietojamības, derīguma un informācijas meklēšanas iespēju novērtējums
2022
The human-computer connection: An overview of brain-computer interfaces
2018
This article introduces the field of brain-computer interfaces (BCI), which allows the control of devices without the generation of any active motor output but directly from the decoding of the user’s brain signals. Here we review the current state of the art in the BCI field, discussing the main components of such an interface and illustrating ongoing research questions and prototypes for controlling a large variety of devices, from virtual keyboards for communication to robotics systems to replace lost motor functions and even clinical interventions for motor rehabilitation after a stroke. The article concludes with some insights into the future of BCI.
Flipped evaluation: herramientas online para la evaluación participativa
2021
[EN] The evaluation of a subject is a fundamental part of the teaching-learning process and one of the main concerns of our students. This is a complex task that requires a lot of effort from the teacher. This is a growing effort in line with the increased weight of con-tinuous evaluation in the current educational system. In this work, different methodo-logies focused on maximizing the student’s performance are presented, thus minimizing the extra effort for the teacher in the evaluation process. We provide several examples of activities throught Moodle platform such as the workshop, glossary, databases, ques-tionnaires, etc. Some of them allow self-assessment once configured, whereas others pr…
Aqueous solution chemistry of alkyltin(IV) compounds for speciation studies in biological fluids and natural waters
2012
Abstract Organotin(IV) cations behave as Lewis acids of different strength depending on the charge, according to the following acidity scale: RSn3+ > R2Sn2+ > R3Sn+. For this reason they can react with Lewis bases containing –O, –N, –S donor groups to form complex species of different stability. Complex formation of organotin(IV) moieties with a great number of inorganic and organic ligands in aqueous solution is reviewed here in the light of their environmental and biological impact. To this end, complex species formation was considered in different ionic media and at different ionic strengths, with reference to the composition of natural waters and biological fluids. In particular, the in…
Sequestering ability of some chelating agents towards methylmercury(II).
2013
A study on the interactions between CH3Hg+ and some S, N and O donor ligands (2-mercaptopropanoic acid (thiolactic acid (H2 TLA)), 3-mercaptopropanoic acid (H2 MPA), 2-mercaptosuccinic acid (thiomalic acid (H3 TMA)), d,l-penicillamine (H2 PSH), l-cysteine (H2 CYS), glutathione (H3 GSH), N,N′-bis(3-aminopropyl)-1-4-diaminobutane (spermine (SPER)), 1,2,3,4,5,6-benzenehexacarboxylic acid (mellitic acid (H6 MLT)) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (H4 EDTA)) is reported. The speciation models in aqueous solution and the possible structures of the complexes formed are discussed on the basis of potentiometric, calorimetric, UV spectrophotometric and electrospray mass spectrometric results. For t…
Usability of ERP Error Messages
2014
Usability of complex information system like enterprise resource planning (ERP) system is still a challenging area. This is why many usability problems have been found in the ERP system. In this article, we tried to highlight the 21 usability problems in ERP error messages by using Nielsen’s heuristics and inquiry questionnaire methods. Nielsen’s heuristics is a better for finding a large number of unique usability problems in different areas. The inquiry questionnaire method has some constraints, but it is useful for comprehending how the actual end-users perceive an application. peerReviewed
Urban Governance in Latvia: Feeling Urban and Thinking Rural
2019
Urbanisation is affecting not only countries with high number of residents but also with small number. The aim of the research is to explore urbanisation and shrinking city tendencies in a country with small number of residents in the context of globalization and urbanisation. The “donut effect” will be explored in the capital city Riga and ten municipalities nearby. The main research question is to what extent can the classical understanding and perception of urbanisation be applied to small societies and countries, and what kind of effects does the urbanisation create in such dynamically developing countries. There are several interdependent problems, such as the new patterns of urban–rur…
