Voluntary associations and trust in Finland

2009

The article is an empirical study of the hypothesis put forward in theories of social capital, according to which voluntary associations have a positive e ect on trust in people. The central research question of the article is: are association memberships or active participation related to trust towards people in Finland? Looking at the number of association memberships and association registrations shows that association life has been active in Finland. The international comparison shows that particularly in the Nordic countries, people participate in associations on a vast scale. However, it is also important to note that while the old politicalideological associations have lost some of t…

Key challenges and best practices in the coordination of volunteers in healthcare services: A qualitative systematic review.

2020

Cooperation between voluntary organisations and volunteers within healthcare services contributes to the development of public welfare. The coordination process between healthcare services and volunteers must therefore be studied to understand associated challenges and best practices. This paper presents a systematic literature review of studies that have used qualitative methods. The review was conducted to identify the knowledge base concerning these issues. The search was performed in 4 April 2019 on five databases: EbscoHost, Ovid, Scopus, Emerald and Svemed+. The selection criteria included papers published between 1 January 2009 and 4 April 2019. In total, 5,340 papers were extracted;…

Online Web Bot Detection Using a Sequential Classification Approach

2019

A significant problem nowadays is detection of Web traffic generated by automatic software agents (Web bots). Some studies have dealt with this task by proposing various approaches to Web traffic classification in order to distinguish the traffic stemming from human users' visits from that generated by bots. Most of previous works addressed the problem of offline bot recognition, based on available information on user sessions completed on a Web server. Very few approaches, however, have been proposed to recognize bots online, before the session completes. This paper proposes a novel approach to binary classification of a multivariate data stream incoming on a Web server, in order to recogn…

Web Server Support for e-Customer Loyalty through QoS Differentiation

2013

The paper deals with the problem of offering predictive service in e-commerce Web server systems under overload. Due to unpredictability of Web accesses, such systems often fail to effectively handle peak traffic, which results in long delays and incomplete transactions. As a consequence, online retailers miss an opportunity to attract new customers, retain the loyalty of regular customers, and increase profits. We propose a method for priority-based admission control and scheduling of requests at the Web server system in order to differentiate Quality of Service (QoS) with regard to user-perceived delays, i.e., Web page response times provided by the system (as opposed to HTTP request resp…

Mācību satura integratīvais aspekts ģeogrāfijas stundās mācīšanās motivācijas paaugstināšanai

2015

Pētījuma problēmas būtība ir Skolēnu nepietiekamās spējas iegūtās zināšanas vienā mācību priekšmetā izmantot jaunās situācijās, attīstīt un pielietot citos priekšmetos. Skolēnu izzinās spējas pilnveidošanos mācīšanas motivācijas paaugstināšanai skolotājs ierosina Skolēnu pamatojumu atbildēt uz jautājumiem: Kāpēc jāmāca? Kāpēc jāzina? Pētījuma mērķis ir izpētīt mācību satura integratīvo aspektu Skolēnu izziņas spēju pilnveidošanai un mācīšanās motivācijas paaugstināšanai. Pētījumā tika integrēti pieci mācību priekšmeti: ģeogrāfija, bioloģija, ķīmija, vēsture, angļu valoda un informātika. Integrētās stundas realizācijai Tehnikumā tika aprobētas daudzveidīgas mācību metodes: C.L.I.L., WebQuest…

Rethinking Political Representation from the Perspective of Rhetorical Genres

2019

This article is a thought experiment. It constructs ideal types of political representation in the sense of Max Weber. Inspired by Quentin Skinner and others, the aim is to give a rhetorical turn to contemporary debates on representation. The core idea is to claim an ‘elective affinity’ (Wahlverwandschaft, as Weber says following Goethe) between forms of representation and rhetorical genres of their justification. The four ideal types of political representation are designated as plebiscitary, diplomatic, advocatory, and parliamentary, corresponding to the epideictic, negotiating, forensic, and deliberative genres of rhetoric as the respective ways to plausibly appeal to the audience. I dis…

Change and stability: Within-person life satisfaction over a 20-year period using data from the HUNT survey

2020

Background: The aim of the present study was to investigate within-person life satisfaction (LS) dynamics for two age groups, 20–29 and 30–39 years, from 1984 to 1986 and to follow them over a 20-year period. Methods: Data from 1984 to 2008 were extracted from the large, prospective, longitudinal North-Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT), Norway. This paper includes data from more than 14,500 persons. Data were analysed using logistic regression, and LS dynamics were modelled using gender, time and self-rated health. Results: The analyses revealed that about 20% of people in these age groups had a stable level in LS, also known as set point. Long-term LS change, defined as ⩾2 SDs, was reported f…

ACQUISITION OF STUDENT SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY SKILLS: CENTRALISED EXAMINATION RESULTS IN CHEMISTRY

2016

From 2011, the new educational standard in Latvia in the framework of the educational reform on the centralised examination (CE) in chemistry stipulates students to demonstrate the inquiry skills they have mastered. The purpose of this study is to find out the students’ inquiry skills by analysing the CE results in chemistry. This study addresses the following research questions: (a) To what extent are the centralised examination inquiry skills measured according to the standard outcomes? (b) What information on how students have mastered the inquiry skills in chemistry is available from the CE results for the period of 2011-2015? (c) Does measuring the inquiry skills using inquiry-based la…
