Using Dynamic Light Scattering for Monitoring the Size of the Suspended Particles in Wastewater

Abstract A coherent light scattering experiment on wastewater samples extracted from several stages of water processing within a wastewater processing plant was carried out. The samples were allowed to sediment while they were the subject of a Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) measurement. The recorded time series were processed using an Artificial Neural Network based DLS procedure to produce the average diameter of the particles in suspension. The method, using a single physical procedure for monitoring the variation of the average diameter in time, indicates the dominant type of suspensions in water.

Diagnostic Performance and Radiation Dose of the EOS System to Image Enchondromatosis: A Phantom Study

Background: Radiation doses and capability of EOS, conventional radiography (CR), and computed tomography (CT) to detect and measure enchondromas in a dedicated five-year-old anthropomorphic phantom were compared. Methods: To simulate enchondromas, minced pieces of chicken bone and cartilage were packed in conventional kitchen plastic foil to create ovoidal/rounded masses and randomly hung on the phantom. The phantom was imaged five times with CR, CT, and EOS, each time changing the number and position of inserts. All images were reviewed by a senior radiologist and a radiology resident. Synthetic nanopores with fixed charges: An electrodiffusion model for ionic transport

Synthetic nanopores with fixed charges exhibit ionic equilibrium and transport properties that resemble those displayed by biological ion channels. We present an electrodiffusion model based on the Nernst-Planck flux equations, which allows for a qualitative description of the steady state ionic transport through a nanopore when the membrane fixed charges and all mobile carriers (including the water ions) are properly taken into account. In particular, we study the current-voltage curve, the electrical conductance, the reversal potential (a measure of the nanopore ionic selectivity), as well as the flux inhibition by protons and divalent cations in the nanopore. Deformation of flexible ferromagnetic filaments under a rotating magnetic field

Research on magnetic particles dispersed in a fluid medium, actuated by a rotating magnetic field, is becoming increasingly active for both lab-on-chip and bio-sensing applications. In this study, we experimentally investigate the behaviour of ferromagnetic filaments in a rotating field. Filaments are synthesized by linking micron-sized ferromagnetic particles with DNA strands. The experiments were conducted under different magnetic field strengths, frequencies and filament sizes, and deformation of the filaments was registered via microscope and camera. Shape Memory Alloys (SMA) are metal materials that, after being strained, come back to their original shape at a designated temperature. Mechanical and Thermal Stability of Adhesive Membranes with Nonzero Bending Rigidity

Membranes at a microscopic scale are affected by thermal fluctuations and self-adhesion due to van der Waals forces. Methods to prepare membranes of even molecular scale, e.g., graphene, have recently been developed, and the question of their mechanical and thermal stability is of crucial importance. To this end we modeled microscopic membranes with an attractive interaction and applied Langevin dynamics. Their behavior was also analyzed under external loading. Laser direct writing of gold conductors from metallorganic inks

Laser deposition of gold lines from spin-on metallorganic (MO) precursors has been studied. A readily available and relatively low-cost commercial MO ink has been used to write gold interconnects on different substrates. The physical properties of the ink, its laser-firing process on oxidised silicon substrates and its electrical characterisation are presented here, together with the experimental procedure needed for obtaining low-resistivity deposits.

Effects of the cycling workload on core and local skin temperatures

[EN] Purpose: The aim of the study was to determine the influence of cycling workload on the variation of core and skin temperature of the different body regions, and the relationship between both temperature variables. Method: Fourteen cyclists performed two 45-min cycling tests at 35% and 50% of peak power output on different days. The cadence was constant in both tests (90 rpm). Core temperature was measured continuously throughout the test and local skin temperature was recorded before, immediately after and 10 min after finishing the cycling test.
