The ligand-activated retinoid receptors RXR and RAR control development, homeostasis and disease by regulating transcription of retinoic acid (RA) responsive target genes or crosstalk with other signalling pathways. According to the current model ligand-binding triggers an exchange between corepressor- and coactivator-complexes that inhibit or potentiate transcription by deacetylating and acetylating nucleosomal histones, respectively. The Mu1 transposable element of maize contains two promoter signals recognized by the Escherichia coli RNA polymerase.

The galactokinase (GalK) expression plasmid vector system pKO-1 has been used to screen for promoter elements in the maize transposable element Mu1 that function in Escherichia coli. Two transcriptional start points, named S1 and S2, were identified, which are located in the two direct repeats of the transposable element. This paper demonstrates that sequence elements exist in a plant transposable element which function as prokaryotic promotors.

SummaryThe highly substrate-specific strictosidine synthase (EC 4.3.3.2) catalyzes the biological Pictet-Spengler condensation between tryptamine and secologanin, leading to the synthesis of about 2000 monoterpenoid indole alkaloids in higher plants. The crystal structure of Rauvolfia serpentina strictosidine synthase (STR1) in complex with strictosidine has been elucidated here, allowing the rational site-directed mutation of the active center of STR1 and resulting in modulation of its substrate acceptance. A sequence element downstream of the yeast HTB1 gene contributes to mRNA 3' processing and cell cycle regulation.

Histone mRNAs accumulate in the S phase and are rapidly degraded as cells progress into the G(2) phase of the cell cycle. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, fusion of the 3' untranslated region and downstream sequences of the yeast histone gene HTB1 to a neomycin phosphotransferase open reading frame is sufficient to confer cell cycle regulation on the resulting chimera gene (neo-HTB1). We have identified a sequence element, designated the distal downstream element (DDE), that influences both the 3'-end cleavage site selection and the cell cycle regulation of the neo-HTB1 mRNA. Dynamic properties of some β-chain mutant hemoglobins

The thermal behavior of the Soret band relative to the carbonmonoxy derivatives of some beta-chain mutant hemoglobins is studied in the temperature range 300-10 K and compared to that of wild-type carbonmonoxy hemoglobin. The band profile at various temperatures is modeled as a Voigt function that accounts for homogeneous broadening and for the coupling with high- and low-frequency vibrational modes, while inhomogeneous broadening is taken into account with a gaussian distribution of purely electronic transition frequencies. Virtual reality as a recovering environment - Implications for design principles

In this study, a simulated, VR-based environment was built and analyzed to explore if a VR environment can possess recovering effects. 61 university students tested a VR application depicting a forest and answered survey questions about the experience. The results showed that VR-environment can indeed have recovering effects. Moreover, when comparing to previous studies in real forests, the recovery effects were at similar levels. The study results suggest that as the VR-based environments can possess recovery effects, they can work as recovery environments at schools or similar environments. A Role for the β1-β2Loop in the Gating of 5-HT3Receptors

Based on theTorpedoacetylcholine receptor structure, Unwin and colleagues (Miyazawa et al., 2003; Unwin, 2005) hypothesized that the transduction of agonist binding to channel gate opening involves a “pin-into-socket” interaction between αV46 at the tip of the extracellular β1-β2loop and the transmembrane M2 segment and M2-M3 loop. We mutated to cysteine the aligned positions in the 5-HT3Aand 5-HT3Bsubunit β1-β2loops K81 and Q70, respectively. THE HOMOLOGY OF DIGRAPHS AS A GENERALIZATION OF HOCHSCHILD HOMOLOGY

J. Przytycki has established a connection between the Hochschild homology of an algebra $A$ and the chromatic graph homology of a polygon graph with coefficients in $A$. In general the chromatic graph homology is not defined in the case where the coefficient ring is a non-commutative algebra. In this paper we define a new homology theory for directed graphs which takes coefficients in an arbitrary $A-A$ bimodule, for $A$ possibly non-commutative, which on polygons agrees with Hochschild homology through a range of dimensions.
