Focal Transcriptional Activity of Murine Cytomegalovirus during Latency in the Lungs

1999

ABSTRACT Interstitial pneumonia is a frequent and critical manifestation of human cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease in immunocompromised patients, in particular in recipients of bone marrow transplantation. Previous work in the murine CMV infection model has identified the lungs as a major organ site of CMV latency and recurrence. It was open to question whether the viral genome is transcriptionally silent or active during latency. Transcription could be latency associated and thus be part of the latency phenotype. Alternatively, transcriptional activity could reflect episodes of reactivation. We demonstrate here that transcription of the immediate-early (IE) transcription unit ie1-ie3 selectiv…

An antigen fragment encompassing the AD2 domains of glycoprotein B from two different strains is sufficient for differentiation of primary vs. recurr…

2001

Primary human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection during pregnancy is a frequent cause of fatal damage in populations with low prevalence of HCMV. Differentiation of primary vs. recurrent HCMV infection is an important issue in prenatal counseling. Antibodies specific for viral glycoproteins become detectable only with considerable delay with relation to HCMV infection or IgG seroconversion. Thus, lack of glycoprotein specific (gp-specific) antibodies can serve as a convenient indicator to identify those pregnant women that bear an elevated risk for HCMV transplacental transmission and fetal sequelae. In the opposite case, presence of gp-specific antibodies virtually excludes HCMV primary infe…

LOCAL MICROWAVE HYPERTHERMIA AND INTRAVESICAL CHEMOTHERAPY AS BLADDER SPARING TREATMENT FOR SELECT MULTIFOCAL AND UNRESECTABLE SUPERFICIAL BLADDER TU…

1998

Purpose: The role of a combined regimen of local hyperthermia and topical chemotherapy in patients with multifocal and recurrent superficial bladder tumors not curable by transurethral resection was evaluated in a neodjuvant organ sparing clinical study. Materials and Methods: A total of 19 patients with multifocal, superficial grades 1 to 3 bladder tumors that recurred after intravesical chemoprophylaxis or immunoprophylaxis underwent local combined administration of microwave induced hyperthermia and intravesical chemotherapy as a debulking approach. Due to extensive superficial involvement of the bladder walls complete transurethral resection of all tumors seemed technically unfeasible i…

Frührezidiv des Morbus Crohn nach »kurativer« Ileocoecalresektion: Eine prospektive endoskopische und histologische Untersuchung*

2008

The postoperative course of 44 patients (24 women, 20 men; mean age 31.5 [18-63] years) treated by ileocaecal resection for Crohn's disease was investigated prospectively. None of the patients received any prophylactic drug treatment during the 12-month postoperative period of observation. Recurrence of Crohn's disease was endoscopically diagnosed in 21 of the 44 patients during the 12-month period, and in 14 patients recurrence was suspected. Histological confirmation of recurrent Crohn's disease, however, was obtained unequivocally in only 11 patients, while in further 20 patients there was suspicion of recurrence. A large proportion of the recurrences was already confirmed endoscopically…

Clinical resistance to the kinase inhibitor PKC412 in acute myeloid leukemia by mutation of Asn-676 in the FLT3 tyrosine kinase domain.

2005

Activating mutations in the FLT3 tyrosine kinase (TK) occur in approximately 35% of patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Therefore, targeting mutated FLT3 is an attractive therapeutic strategy, and early clinical trials testing FLT3 TK inhibitors (TKI) showed measurable clinical responses. Most of these responses were transient; however, in a subset of patients blast recurrence was preceded by an interval of prolonged remission. The etiology of clinical resistance to FLT3-TKI in AML is unclear but is of major significance for the development of future therapeutic strategies. We searched for mechanisms of resistance in 6 patients with AML who had relapses upon PKC412 treatment. In an …

Molte Palermo. Temi

2019

In the theme of unfinished ideas of possible cities will recognize the connotative paradigm of the evolution of Palermo will be recognised along a thousand year path of transformational processes none of which was completed by virtue of the distinctive value of exemplum that does not require additional and conclusive demonstrations. The course of history has moreover imposed on Palermo a cyclical recurrence of broken destinies. This was evidence of the invention of the capital city that of the “geometric square and the cross roads” superimposed on the archetypal underpinning of Pan-ormos as a place of exchange. And incompleteness will be the hallmark of the city of the nineteenth century straight roads heading towards undefined destinations the symptomatic expression of the idea of a preordained effect of suspension. Similarly unfinished will be the Palermo of the redevelopment plans in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries upto the shapeless development of the contemporary city and the new arterial routes (the Circonvallazione) manifestations of further “Palermo as abstraction” ever more distant from “Palermo as places”. A city ultimately characterized by continuous metamorphoses replacement of values absorptions oblivion and cultural desecration. From this distance one can indeed observe Palermo from a marginal and peripherical point of view as regards its urban limits opening up a different prospect penetrating and maybe even superior able to understand facts and phenomena in depth.Settore ICAR/14 - Composizione Architettonica E Urbana

Reconstruction of full thickness scalp defects after tumour excision in elderly patients: our experience with Integra dermal regeneration template.

2010

Summary Background Scalp reconstruction after wide tumor excision is particularly challenging. Free tissue transfers, local flaps, or skin grafts can be used but present some disadvantages especially with old patients with local advanced cancers, systemic diseases and in patients with a prior history of recurring scalp skin cancers in which the risk of burying a recurring tumor with a flap is likely. The Authors expose their early experience with Integra ® dermal regeneration template for scalp reconstruction after scalp tumor excision. Methods Eight patients with primary or secondary scalp tumor underwent a first surgical procedure under local anaesthesia for tumor removal and Integra ® po…

Not all KIT 557/558 codons mutations have the same prognostic influence on recurrence-free survival: breaking the exon 11 mutations in gastrointestin…

2021

Background: Although the gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) genotype is not currently included in risk-stratification systems, a growing body of evidence shows that the pathogenic variant (PV) type and codon location hold a strong prognostic influence on recurrence-free survival (RFS). This information has particular relevance in the adjuvant setting, where an accurate prognostication could help to better identify high-risk tumors and guide clinical decision-making. Materials and Methods: Between January 2005 and December 2020, 96 patients with completely resected GISTs harboring a KIT proto-oncogene receptor tyrosine kinase ( KIT) exon 11 PV were included in the study. We analyzed the t…
