Towards Neural Reusable Neuro-inspired Systems

This chapter presents an overview of some key aspects of the neuro-inspired modelling previously discussed, under the new perspective of the neural reuse theory. Here it is envisaged that the excellent capabilities shown by insects with their small neuron number and relatively low brain complexity, as compared to vertebrates, could be justified if some key neural structures are re-used for different behavioural needs. The chapter recalls some examples, found in the literature for addressing specific topics and reformulates them in relation to the neural reuse theory.

Smart Phone, Smart Science: How the Use of Smartphones Can Revolutionize Research in Cognitive Science

A Collective Binomial Learning Methodology

In second-language learning, learners frequently have a poor environment for speaking and hearing the target language. Learning efficiency is thus limited. We propose a methodology involving the creation of temporary social structures. Collective interactions fed back among individuals and environment are constructed on a computer and practiced in a real world. A dynamic learning system which coherently ties together the practitioner’s design, the learner’s performance and the researcher’s theories is possible. Our results call for language learning structures to include adaptive spoken structures, in contrast with existing educational systems.

Teachers’ responsibility and expectations: Dependent on the school organisation?

This article presents findings from a qualitative case study focusing on teachers’ communication concerning expectations and responsibilities in different schools. The study indicates the following: (1) the connection between structural expectations and responsibility is important, (2) different expectation structures provide different opportunities for collective responsibility, and (3) expectations from others and towards others in a learning community can limit or expand opportunities to learn from each other. Probing dynamics of dense suspensions: three-dimensional cross-correlation technique

We describe the realization of a novel three-dimensional (3D) cross-correlation scheme, which provides the possibility to measure dynamic structure factors of highly concentrated colloidal samples without contributions of multiply scattered light. The apparatus is easier to align and more compact than the two-colour cross-correlation apparatus, which is commercially available. This should make the 3D cross-correlation set-up more convenient for routine applications, for example in industrial laboratories. We describe the set-up and discuss some special features of the optical components.

Rotational diffusion of colloid spheres in concentrated suspensions studied by deuteron NMR

We present a study of the application of deuteron-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) to the investigation of the rotational diffusion of spherical colloidal particles. We performed NMR pulse experiments on colloidal suspensions of polystyrene latex spheres in water-glycerol mixtures in a wide range of particle volume fractions \ensuremath{\varphi} from the dilute suspension up to \ensuremath{\varphi}=0.504. We have analyzed the stimulated echo NMR signal in the time domain. Laser speckle imaging for early detection of microbial colony forming units

In this study, an optical contactless laser speckle imaging technique for the early identification of bacterial colony-forming units was tested. The aim of this work is to compare the laser speckle imaging method for the early assessment of microbial activity with standard visual inspection under white light illumination. In presented research, the growth of Vibrio natriegens bacterial colonies on the solid medium was observed and analyzed. Laser speckle time-series correlation analysis for bacteria activity detection

The study aims at development and laboratory approbation of non-contact optical technique for early evaluation of microbial activity. Microorganisms’ activity is estimated by laser speckle contrast imaging technique in combination with image processing of obtained time varying speckle patterns. Laser speckle patterns were captured by CMOS sensor during illumination of growing bacteria colonies by low power (<30 mW, 635 nm) stabilized coherent light source. Abstract Several new benzamides 4a–q were synthesized by stirring in pyridine the acid chlorides 3a–q with the appropriate anthranilamide derivatives 2a–g. Some of the synthesized compounds were evaluated for their in vitro antiproliferative activity against a panel of 5 human cell lines (K562 human chronic myelogenous leukemia cells, MCF-7 breast cancer cells, HTC-116 and HT26 colon cancer cells and NCI H460 non-small cell lung cancer cells).
