Wilms tumours diagnosed by routine physical examinations.
1988
Sir: The prognosis of stage I and -II Wilms tumours with favourable histology is good, reaching 97% (stage I) and 92% (stage II) 5 year disease-free survival rates [1]. With these figures in mind the question arises whether the overall prognosis of Wilms tumours could be improved by presymptomatic routine physical examinations in an attempt to avoid stage III to V primary diagnoses. In the Federal Republic of Germany six routine physical examinations (RPE) are offered to infants, and two additional ones to children between 12 and 48 months. The 1980-1987 German Wilms tumour study [1] listed 313 patients, 29 of whom (9%) were diagnosed by such routine examinations. As shown in Table 1, the R…

Libraries and Intellectual Debate in the Late Republic: the Case of the Aristotelian Corpus
2013
The present chapter explores the catalyzing function of libraries in the intellectual debate of the late Roman Republic, by focusing on the significant case of the Aristotelian esoteric corpus. A careful analysis of the literary and historical evidence concerning the use of Peripatetic texts allows to detect the presence of at least two important libraries containing Aristotle's 'pragmatiai' in Roman Italy: Lucullus' collection in Tusculum and Sulla's one in Cumae. Several Greek and Latin sources bear witness to the vicissitudes of such libraries, and the present paper reassesses their accounts in order to point out the close connection between intellectual patterns and material culture - i…
Law and Liberty. Immanuel Kant and James Madison on the Modern Polity
2018
The article relates Kant to the American Revolution by connecting his republicanism with the ingenious balancing of national and federal features in the constitution of the American republic, as envisioned and enacted by James Madison. Section 1 sets the stage by profiling Kant and Madison in historical and systematic terms. Section 2 traces the development of republicanism from its ancient origins to its modern variety. Section 3 reconstructs Kant's legalist republicanism in the twofold context of his philosophy of history and his philosophy of law. Section 4 portrays Madison as the leading theoretician of the modern federal republic.
The Baltic Historians of Pedagogy and the International Standing Conference for the History of Education
2014
ISCHE, which is the leading organization in the field of history of education in the world, was founded in 1979 in Leuven, Belgium. The initiators to establish the organization were scholars mainly from Belgium, the Federal Republic of Germany and the UK. The “socialist block” in this first meeting was represented by Poles and Hungarians. In the later years, the conference was organized annually in a different country sometimes gathering tens and even hundreds of participants (Luth, n.d.). The first president of ISCHE was a fascinating personality, British lord and communist, one of the most outstanding historians of education in the 20th century Brian Simon (1915–2002) (see McCulloch, 2011…
Ten millennia of hepatitis B virus evolution
2021
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) has been infecting humans for millennia and remains a global health problem, but its past diversity and dispersal routes are largely unknown. We generated HBV genomic data from 137 Eurasians and Native Americans dated between ~10,500 and ~400 years ago. We date the most recent common ancestor of all HBV lineages to between ~20,000 and 12,000 years ago, with the virus present in European and South American hunter-gatherers during the early Holocene. After the European Neolithic transition, Mesolithic HBV strains were replaced by a lineage likely disseminated by early farmers that prevailed throughout western Eurasia for ~4000 years, declining around the end of the 2nd…

Maria Zambrano was born in Velez-Malaga (Malaga) in 1904. Her father, Blas Zambrano, a teacher by profession, was to play a significant part in influencing her, along with her close friend, the poet Antonio Machado. A staunch supporter of the Republic, she went into exile after the end of the Civil War.
