Metabolic Engineering of Bacterial Respiration: High vs. Low P/O and the Case of Zymomonas mobilis
2019
Respiratory chain plays a pivotal role in the energy and redox balance of aerobic bacteria. By engineering respiration, it is possible to alter the efficiency of energy generation and intracellular redox state, and thus affect the key bioprocess parameters: cell yield, productivity and stress resistance. Here we summarize the current metabolic engineering and synthetic biology approaches to bacterial respiratory metabolism, with a special focus on the respiratory chain of the ethanologenic bacterium Zymomonas mobilis. Electron transport in Z. mobilis can serve as a model system of bacterial respiration with low oxidative phosphorylation efficiency. Its application for redox balancing and re…
An assessment of the hemorheological profile in patients with subclinical carotid atherosclerosis divided in relation to the number of cardiovascular…
2021
We present a cohort of 100 subjects [43 men and 57 women; median age 66.00(25)] who were tested using carotid ultrasound to identify subclinical carotid atherosclerosis (SCA). We have evaluated the behaviour of whole blood viscosity (WBV) at high (450 s–1) and low (0.51 s–1) shear rates, plasma viscosity (450–1), hematocrit and mean erythrocyte aggregation. When compared to normal control subjects, using the Mann-Whitney test, we observed in SCA patients a significant increase in WBV only. The results were substantial after having divided the SCA subjects according to the cardiovascular risk factors (CRFs) and the degree of insulin resistance; the research was performed using two surrogate …
Resistance to thyroid hormones. Study of an affected kindred diagnosed at neonatal age
1998
Resistance to thyroid hormones (RTH) is a rare condition of reduced activity of thyroid hormones on peripheral tissues and/or reduced suppression of TSH secretion by thyroid hormones. The disease is characterised by high serum levels of T3, T4, fT3 and fT4, and by unexpectedly normal or high TSH levels. The origin of the resistance has been recognised in a thyroid hormone receptor deficit, whose gene (TRβ) has been mapped on chromosome 3p24.3 and several mutations have been identified. The clinical presentation may vary among a large spectrum from hypo-, to eu-, to hyperthyroidism in different patients, even in the same family. The diagnosis of RTH at birth and in the first months of life i…

IL-1 BLOCKADE IN PAEDIATRIC RECURRENT PERICARDITIS: A MULTICENTRIC RETROSPECTIVE STUDY OF THE ITALIAN COHORT
2019
Introduction: Acute pericarditis is an inflammatory condition causing the occurrence of pericardial effusion. In a third of patients, the disease is recurrent. First line treatment of idiopathic pericarditis consists in non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and colchicine; glucocorticoids represent the second line treatment in resistant or intolerant cases. A recent clinical trial has enlightened the effectiveness of anakinra in adults and paediatric patients with colchicine-resistant recurrent pericarditis. Objectives: To describe the clinical characteristics and response to treatment in a cohort of paediatric patients with recurrent pericarditis treated with IL inhibitors. Method…

2018
Political, economic and military framework of the Albanian immigration in Sicily in the 15th Century. The Crown of Aragon plays a leading role in the Western politics towards Othman expansion and conquest in the Balcans, together with the Italian merchant cities. The article describes the premises of the support given by Alfonso the Magnanimous to the Albanian resistence leaded by Giorgio Skanderbeg and to the immigration of Albanian people to Southern Italy after the Othman conquest of their land.
