A Scanning Electron Microscope for Ultracold Atoms

2006

We propose a new technique for the detection of single atoms in ultracold quantum gases. The technique is based on scanning electron microscopy and employs the electron impact ionization of trapped atoms with a focussed electron probe. Subsequent detection of the resulting ions allows for the reconstruction of the atoms position. This technique is expected to achieve a much better spatial resolution compared to any optical detection method. In combination with the sensitivity to single atoms, it makes new in situ measurements of atomic correlations possible. The detection principle is also well suited for the addressing of individual sites in optical lattices.

High-resolution scanning electron microscopy of an ultracold quantum gas

2008

Our knowledge of ultracold quantum gases is strongly influenced by our ability to probe these objects. In situ imaging combined with single-atom sensitivity is an especially appealing scenario, as it can provide direct information on the structure and the correlations of such systems. For a precise characterization a high spatial resolution is mandatory. In particular, the perspective to study quantum gases in optical lattices makes a resolution well below one micrometre highly desirable. Here, we report on a novel microscopy technique, which is based on scanning electron microscopy and allows for the detection of single atoms inside a quantum gas with a spatial resolution of better than 15…

From atomic to molecular Bose-Einstein condensates: a physically realizable term-crossing model for cold atom association

2010

Using an exact third-order NL di®erential equation for the molecular state probability, we develop a variational approach which enables us to construct highly accurate analytic approximations describing time dynamics of the coupled atom-molecular system in each of the interaction regimes. We show that the approximation describing time evolution of the molecular state probability both in the weak interaction limit and in the large detuning regime of the strong interaction limit can be written as a sum of two distinct terms; the ¯rst one, being a solution to a limit ¯rst-order NL equation, e®ectively describes the process of the molecule formation while the second one, being a scaled solution…

Auto calibration of a cone-beam-CT

2012

Purpose: This paper introduces a novel autocalibration method for cone-beam-CTs (CBCT) or flat-panel CTs, assuming a perfect rotation. The method is based on ellipse-fitting. Autocalibration refers to accurate recovery of the geometric alignment of a CBCT device from projection images alone, without any manual measurements. Methods: The authors use test objects containing small arbitrarily positioned radio-opaque markers. No information regarding the relative positions of the markers is used. In practice, the authors use three to eight metal ball bearings (diameter of 1 mm), e.g., positioned roughly in a vertical line such that their projection image curves on the detector preferably form l…

Mediation and Private International Law: Improving Free Circulation of Mediation Agreements Across the EU

2016

This paper, commissioned by the European Parliament’s Policy Department for Citizens’ Rights and Constitutional Affairs upon request by the JURI Committee, examines the issues arising in the context of cross-border mediation. Cross-border litigation has increased steadily in recent years in Europe as a consequence of the consolidation of the European unification process. The enactment of Directive 2008/52/EC has certainly led to the presence of mediation legislation in the EU Member States. But many important differences can still be ascertained in relation to the legal framework developed, which affect key aspects of mediation. For mediation to obtain full endorsement by citizens in the fu…

Examination Technique of Confocal Laser Endomicroscopy

2007

The first publication about a confocal fluorescence microscope integrated into the distal tip of a conventional colonoscope (Pentax EC 3830FK, Tokyo, Japan) appeared in 2004 [1], showing that in vivo microscopy at subcellular resolution (0.7 µm) simultaneously displayed with white-light endoscopy had become possible. Today, endomicroscopy can be performed in the upper and lower GI tract [2]–[10]. This chapter deals with the examination technique of confocal laser endomicroscopy.

On Severi Type Inequalities for Irregular Surfaces

2017

Let X be a minimal surface of general type and maximal Albanese dimension with irregularity q ≥ 2. We show that K2 X ≥ 4χ(OX) + 4(q − 2) if K2 X < 9 2 χ(OX), and also obtain the characterization of the equality. As a consequence, we prove a conjecture of Manetti on the geography of irregular surfaces if K2 X ≥ 36(q−2) or χ(OX) ≥ 8(q−2), and we also prove a conjecture that the surfaces of general type and maximal Albanese dimension with K2 X = 4χ(OX) are exactly the resolution of double covers of abelian surfaces branched over ample divisors with at worst simple singularities.

Structural highs formation and their relationship to sedimentary basins in the north Sicily continental margin (southern Tyrrhenian Sea): implication…

2005

Two high-penetration seismic profiles across the continental margin of north Sicily (southern Tyrrhenian Sea) have been interpreted to construct a crustal section across the margin and to provide a three-dimensional perspective on the upper crustal setting of the Solunto High and its structural relationships with the adjacent Cefalù Basin. Crystalline rocks of the Kabilian-Calabrian Units (KCU) are recognized in the Solunto High region and farther to the north. The KCU body is tectonically superimposed onto sedimentary rocks pertaining to the Sicilian-Maghrebian Units (SMU) and the Solunto High corresponds to the thrust sheet culmination. Its occurrence in the Solunto High demonstrates that…

Purpose: Presentation of a new protocol for simultaneous acquisition of both low and high resolution T 1 -weighted images of breast lesions for dynamic contrast-enhanced MR mammography. Demonstration of possible diagnostic improvement with representative measurements in patients with suspected breast cancer by adding morphologic parameters from high resolution sequences to the analysis of the signal-time curve. Materials and Methods: Dynamic MR imaging was performed with a 1.5 T system (Magnetom SONATA, Siemens Medical Systems, Germany) and the manufacturer's double-breast coil. Coronal T 1 -weighted 3D FLASH sequences (spatial resolution 1.25 ×1.25 mm 2 ; slice thickness 1.7 mm) were acqui…
