Effect of Handedness on Mental Rotation

The impact of the dominant hand on the response time and precision in mental rotational tasks seems to be controversial. The goal of this study was to compare the differences in response times of mental rotation tasks when the task is performed with the dominant or non-dominant hand. In this study, 44 right-handers and 45 left-handers participated in mental rotation tests with 2-D and 3-D figures. Findings indicate that the right-handers had shorter response times than left-handers in tests with both types of figures.

Abstract Purpose: To measure the compressive forces of the haptics of 28 intraocular lens (IOL) models for different modes of compression and compare the results of two types of measurements. Setting: Department of Ophthalmology, Central Hospital of Central Finland, Jyvaskyla, Finland. Methods: The haptics of 28 types of IOLs were compressed to a diameter of 9.0 mm between curved anvils. The compression forces in the plane of compression (i.e., in the plane of the optics) were measured at 0.5 mm intervals. Numerical and experimental study of liquid metal stirring by rotating permanent magnets

In this work, we study liquid gallium stirring by rotating permanent magnets. We demonstrate possibility of easily creating different flow patterns by rotating permanent magnets, which can be industrially important for controlling heat and mass transfer processes in the system. Unlike the typical approach of simulating magnet rotation as a transient problem and time-averaging the Lorentz forces, we solve the magnet rotation as a harmonic (frequency domain) problem, which leads to forces equal to time-averaged ones and decreases the simulation time considerably. Extremely strong magnetic fields of the order of $10^{15}\,{\rm G}$ are required to explain the properties of magnetars, the most magnetic neutron stars. Such a strong magnetic field is expected to play an important role for the dynamics of core-collapse supernovae, and in the presence of rapid rotation may power superluminous supernovae and hypernovae associated to long gamma-ray bursts. The origin of these strong magnetic fields remains, however, obscure and most likely requires an amplification over many orders of magnitude in the protoneutron star. Rotational Correlation Functions of Single Molecules

Single molecule rotational correlation functions are analyzed for several reorientation geometries. Even for the simplest model of isotropic rotational diffusion our findings predict non-exponential correlation functions to be observed by polarization sensitive single molecule fluorescence microscopy. This may have a deep impact on interpreting the results of molecular reorientation measurements in heterogeneous environments.
General relativistic simulations of pasive-magneto-rotational core collapse with microphysics

This paper presents results from axisymmetric simulations of magneto-rotational stellar core collapse to neutron stars in general relativity using the passive field approximation for the magnetic field. These simulations are performed using a new general relativistic numerical code specifically designed to study this astrophysical scenario. The code is based on the conformally-flat approximation of Einstein's field equations and conservative formulations of the magneto-hydrodynamics equations. The code has been recently upgraded to incorporate a tabulated, microphysical equation of state and an approximate deleptonization scheme. Use of the Perceived Physical Competence Scale with Adolescents with Disabilities

The construct validity and reliability of the 1987 Perceived Physical Competence Scale of Lintunen were examined to assess the applicability of the instrument for use with adolescents with disabilities. Subjects were 51 girls and 34 boys ( M age = 15.1 yr.) from several schools in central Finland. Principal component factor analysis with varimax rotation yielded the same two factors for adolescents with disabilities as reported for nondisabled adolescents in the related literature. Cronbach alphas for the two factors were .89 and .56. It was concluded that the scale is an appropriate measure for adolescents with disabilities. The aim of this study was to determine whether a relationship exists between nucleus accumbens D2 receptors, circling behavior, and its first stage, the head turning. Rats were unilaterally lesioned in the substantia nigra with 6-hydroxydopamine and afterward treated with d-amphetamine IP following bilateral intraaccumbens microinjections (1, 5, 10 micrograms/0.5 microliters) of sulpiride, a D2 receptor antagonist.
