Frequency of dicentrics and contamination levels in Ukrainian children and adolescents from areas near Chernobyl 20 years after the nuclear plant acc…
2013
International audience; Purpose To survey the possible presence of chromosomal damage and internal contamination in a group of Ukrainian children and adolescents, 20 years after the Chernobyl accident at the Nuclear Power Plant. Materials and methods Cytogenetical procedures were performed according to dicentric assay in 55 Ukrainian children and adolescents (29 boys and 26 girls), living near Chernobyl. In addition, a whole body detector and urinalysis were used to detect internal contamination. Results 36 dicentrics were found in a total of 53,477 metaphases scored in these children, which reflected a frequency of dicentrics below the background level. On the other hand, internal contamin…
Micafungin (FK463), alone or in combination with other systemic antifungal agents, for the treatment of acute invasive aspergillosis
2006
Background: Micafungin (FK463) is a new lipopeptide compound (echinocandin) with activity against Aspergillus and Candida species. This study evaluated the safety and efficacy of micafungin in patients with proven or probable invasive aspergillosis (IA). Methods: A multinational, non-comparative study was conducted to examine proven or probable (pulmonary only) Aspergillus species infection in a wide variety of patient populations. The study employed an open-label design utilizing micafungin alone or in combination with another systemic antifungal agent. Criteria for IA and therapeutic responses were judged by an independent panel. Results: Of the 331 patients enrolled, only 225 met diagnos…
A Hydrogel Based on a Polyaspartamide: Characterization and Evaluation of In-vivo Biocompatibility and Drug Release in the Rat
1997
Abstract This paper deals with the characterization of a new microparticulate hydrogel obtained by gamma irradiation of α,β-poly[N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-dl-aspartamide] (PHEA). When enzymatic digestion of PHEA hydrogel was evaluated using various concentrations of pepsin and α-chymotrypsin no degradation occurred within 24 h. In-vivo studies showed that this new material is biocompatible after oral administration to rats. PHEA hydrogel was also studied as a system for delivery of diflunisal, an anti-inflammatory drug. In-vitro release studies in simulated gastrointestinal juice (pH 1 or 6.8) showed that most of the drug was released at pH 6.8. In-vivo studies indicated that diflunisal-loaded PHE…
α,β-poly(asparthylhydrazide)–glycidyltrimethylammonium chloride copolymers (PAHy–GTA): novel polymers with potential for DNA delivery
2001
Hydrophilic polycations form complexes when mixed with plasmids. Following functionalisation with glycidyltrimethylammonium chloride (GTA) alpha,beta-poly(asparthylhydrazide) (PAHy), a water-soluble synthetic macromolecule, becomes polycationic and potentially useful for systemic gene delivery. Initially the biocompatibility of PAHy and PAHy-GTA derivatives with different degrees of positive charge substitution were studied and it was shown that PAHy-GTA was neither haemolytic nor cytotoxicity up to 1 mg/ml. After intravenous injection (125)I-labelled PAHy-GTA derivative containing 46 mol% (PAHy-GTA(b)) of trimethylammonium groups did not accumulate in the liver (4.1+/-0.9% of the recovered…

Inferring postimplant dose distribution of salvage permanent prostate implant (PPI) after primary PPI on CT images
2018
International audience; PURPOSE:To evaluate the dose distribution of additional radioactive seeds implanted during salvage permanent prostate implant (sPPI) after a primary permanent prostate implant (pPPI).METHODS AND MATERIALS:Patients with localized prostate cancer were primarily implanted with iodine-125 seeds and had a dosimetric assessment based on day 30 postimplant CT (CT1). After an average of 6 years, these patients underwent sPPI followed by the same CT-based evaluation of dosimetry (CT2). Radioactive seeds on each CT were detected. The detected primary seeds on CT1 and CT2 were registered and then removed from CT2 referred as a modified CT2 (mCT2). Dosimetry evaluations (D90 and…
Recanalization Therapies in Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients Impact of Prior Treatment With Novel Oral Anticoagulants on Bleeding Complications and Out…
2015
Background— We explored the safety of intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) or intra-arterial treatment (IAT) in patients with ischemic stroke on non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs, last intake <48 hours) in comparison with patients (1) taking vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) or (2) without previous anticoagulation (no-OAC). Methods and Results— This is a multicenter cohort pilot study. Primary outcome measures were (1) occurrence of intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) in 3 categories: any ICH (ICH any ), symptomatic ICH according to the criteria of the European Cooperative Acute Stroke Study II (ECASS-II) (sICH ECASS-II ) and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke …
Model-Based Dose Calculation Algorithms for Brachytherapy Dosimetry
2019
The purpose of this study was to review the limitations of dose calculation formalisms for photon-emitting brachytherapy sources based on the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) Task Group No. 43 (TG-43) report and to provide recommendations to transition to model-based dose calculation algorithms. Additionally, an overview of these algorithms and approaches is presented. The influence of tissue and seed/applicator heterogeneities on brachytherapy dose distributions for breast, gynecologic, head and neck, rectum, and prostate cancers as well as eye plaques and electronic brachytherapy treatments were investigated by comparing dose calculations based on the TG-43 formalism …
Optimal local control and tolerability of three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy in prostate cancer: A single institutional experience of dose…
2013
Aims To evaluate long-term late side effects, clinical and biochemical relapse in non-metastatic prostate cancer patients treated with dose escalation, from 74 to 78 Gy, by means of three dimensional conformal radiation therapy. Materials and Methods Clinical data of 125 patients with prostate cancer who underwent three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy were retrospectively evaluated. All patients were stratified, according to the NCCN classification, in low, intermediate and high risk, and all of them showed histologically proven adenocarcinoma stage T1–T3 with at least 2 years of follow-up. Late toxicity was analyzed using a modified Radiation Therapy Oncology Group toxicity scale. …
Sequential boost in neoadjuvant irradiation for T3N0-1 rectal cancer: long-term results from a single-center experience.
2016
Purpose To evaluate the influence of radiation dose on tumor regression grade (TRG) and sphincter preservation rate in a series of cT3N0-1 rectal cancer patients treated with neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (CT-RT) with or without a sequential radiation boost. Materials and methods Between May 2002 and September 2013, 116 cases were eligible for retrospective evaluation. Radiotherapy was delivered for a total dose of 45 Gy (no boost arm) or 50.4 Gy (boost arm). TRG was evaluated with the Dworak scale. Results Median follow-up was 62 months (range, 12-138 months). The 5-year overall survival and local control rates were 72% and 93%, respectively. Fifty-five patients (47%) were treated with a s…
