Prevalence of Toscana and Sicilian Phlebovirus Antibodies in Classic Kaposi Sarcoma Case Patients and Control Subjects in Sicily
2011
To assess whether arthropod bites promote Kaposi sarcoma (KS), we determined the seroprevalence of Sicilian (SFSV) and Toscana (TOSV) phlebovirus antibodies in 30 patients with classic KS and 100 controls in Sicily. Nine (6.9%) subjects, all controls, were positive for SFSV, whereas 41 (31.5%) were positive for TOSV. Seroprevalence with immunoglobulin (Ig) M or IgG against either virus was significantly higher in controls (43% vs 13.3% in case patients; P < .01). Adjusted for age, IgG seroprevalence was significantly lower in KS patients compared to controls (adjusted odds ratio, 0.22; 95% confidence interval, .07–.72). Low phlebovirus seroprevalence in patients with KS may reflect incapaci…
Treatment of soft tissue sarcoma in childhood and adolescence: A report of the german cooperative soft tissue sarcoma study
1992
Background In the first German soft tissue sarcoma (STS) study, CWS-81, 344 patients younger than 19 years of age who had previously untreated soft tissue sarcoma were studied. For this analysis, there were 218 patients with chemosensitive STS (Group A: rhabdomyosarcoma [RMS], synovial sarcoma, extraosseous Ewing sarcoma, leiomyosarcoma, undifferentiated sarcoma, and malignant peripheral neuroectodermal tumor) who could be studied for a minimum potential follow-up time of 6 years. Methods A staging system based on the postoperative extent of the disease was used. The chemotherapy for Stage I-III disease consisted of vincristine, dactinomycin, cyclophosphamide, and doxorubicin (VACA). Patien…
Deregulation of dicer and mir-155 expression in liposarcoma
2015
Liposarcoma (LPS) is the most common soft tissue sarcoma. It has been demonstrated that mir-155 was the most overexpressed miRNA in well-differentiated LPS(WDLPS)/dedifferentiated LPS (DDLPS). The aim of this study is to evaluate the involvement of Dicer, Drosha and mir-155 in development of LPS and their possible role in stratification of different histological subtypes. Dicer, Drosha and mir-155 mRNA levels were analyzed in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded specimens from patients diagnosed with 62 LPS and compared with samples of adipose tissues of healthy donors. The experimental data were obtained using qRT-PCR comparing Dicer, Drosha and mir-155 expression levels in tumor samples versu…
IL-6 receptor independent stimulation of human gp130 by viral IL-6.
2000
Abstract The genome of human herpes virus 8, which is associated with Kaposi’s sarcoma, encodes proteins with similarities to cytokines and chemokines including a homologue of IL-6. Although the function of these viral proteins is unclear, they might have the potential to modulate the immune system. For viral IL-6 (vIL-6), it has been demonstrated that it stimulates IL-6-dependent cells, indicating that the IL-6R system is used. IL-6 binds to IL-6R, and the IL-6/IL-6R complex associates with gp130 which dimerizes and initiates intracellular signaling. Cells that only express gp130 but no IL-6R cannot be stimulated by IL-6 unless a soluble form of the IL-6R is present. This type of signaling…
Localisation of mediterranean Kaposi's sarcoma in Morgagni's ventricle
2011
Objective: Head and neck involvement in Kaposi’s Sarcoma (KS) is not unusual . However, laryngeal involvement is a relatively infrequent manifestation and ENT specialists should consider it in differential diagnosis in laryngeal lesions of AIDS patients and/or subjects from the Mediterranean area. Methods: Case report and review of the literature in English Clinical Case: Male patient presenting with a three- month history of cough and acute dispnoea. Laryngoscopy identified a laryngeal mass occluding the glottic plane. Tracheotomy was then performed and the laryngeal lesion was removed. Histopathology showed neoplastic spindle cells that were positive to immunostain with CD-31 and CD-34, a…
Myxoid liposarcoma of the spermatic cord: US and MR imaging findings.
2013
We report a patient with myxoid liposarcoma of the spermatic cord in whom combined use of both ultrasound (US) and MRI helped to suggest the diagnosis. The lesion was solid at US and vascularized at color Doppler. T1-weighted MRI did not show fat within it; on T2-weighted images it had high signal intensity, with a cyst-like appearance. It is known that fat-poor myxoid liposarcomas with high water content may mimic a cystic lesion on non-contrast-enhanced MR; then, a combination of MRI findings, suggesting a cyst, and of US findings, showing the mass was actually solid and vascularized, allowed preoperatively the diagnosis of fat-poor myxoid liposarcoma. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
Hyperalgesia and opioid switching
2005
Opioids, intended to abolish pain, can unexpectedly produce hyperalgesia, particularly during rapid opioid escalation. Opioid switching could be a therapeutic option in a condition of opioid-induced tolerance or hyperalgesia, but conversion ratios between opioids are difficult to apply in this context and require strict surveillance and expertise. This situation is challenging, because the rapid escalation of opioid doses, possibly due to the development of opioid-induced tolerance, can cause hyperalgesia. To avoid this adverse effect, clinicians need to refine their assessment of pain treatment and consider opioid switching. The authors present a case report in which switching from fentan…
Oxygenation of malignant tumors after localized microwave hyperthermia
1982
The oxyhemoglobin saturation (HbO2) of single red blood cells within tumor microvessels (diameter: 3-12 micrometers) of DS-Carcinosarcoma was studied using a cryophotometric micromethod. In untreated control tumors (mean tissue temperature approx. 35 degrees C) the measured values scattered over the whole saturation range from zero to 100 sat. %, the mean being 51 sat. %. Upon heating at 40 degrees C for 30 min, the oxygenation of the tumor tissue significantly improved as compared with control conditions. After 40 degrees C-hyperthermia a mean oxyhemoglobin saturation of 66 sat. % was obtained. In contradistinction to this, after 43 degrees C-hyperthermia the tumor oxygenation was signific…
Fungal polysaccharopeptide inhibits tumor angiogenesis and tumor growth in mice
2003
Angiogenesis is crucial to tumor growth and metastasis, and interruption of this process is a prime avenue for therapeutic intervention of tumor proliferation. The present study has made use of the S180 tumor-bearing mouse model to investigate the polysaccharopeptide, PSP, isolated from the edible mushroom Coriolus versicolor, a herbal medicine known for its anti-angiogenesis properties. Quantitative analysis of microcorrosion casting of the tumor tissue showed more angiogenic features such as dense sinusoids and hot spots, in control (untreated) than in PSP-treated animals. Immunostaining of tumor tissues with antibody against the endothelial cell marker (Factor VIII) demonstrated a positi…
Cytogenetic study of a spindle-cell rhabdomyosarcoma of the parotid gland.
1999
The cytogenetic analysis of a spindle-cell rhabdomyosarcoma of the parotid gland in a 6-year-old boy is reported. The tumor cells showed an abnormal karyotype with a hypotriploid modal chromosome number and clonal structural rearrangements affecting chromosomes 1, 8, 12, 21, and 22. The tumor karyotype was: 59, XY, -1, -3, -4, -5, -6, +8, +8, +del(8)(q22q24), -9, -10, del(12)(q13), -15, -16, -17, -18, der(21)t(12;21)(p11;p11), -22, der(22)t(1;22)(q12;p11).
