Radionuclide fluxes in the Arabian Sea: the role of particle composition

2005

We investigated the influence of the composition of the vertical particle flux on the removal of particle reactive natural radionuclides (Th-230 and Pa-231) from the water column to the sediments. Radionuclide concentrations determined in sediment traps moored in the western, central and eastern Arabian Sea were related to the major components (carbonate, particulate organic matter (POC), opal, lithogenic material) of the particle flux. These data were combined with sediment trap data previously published from the Southern Ocean, Equatorial Pacific and North Atlantic [Z. Chase, R.F. Anderson, M.Q. Fleisher, P.W. Kubik, The influence of particle composition and particle flux on scavenging of…

Zr, Hf and REE distribution in river water under different ionic strength conditions

2018

International audience; The Platani River flowing in south-central Sicily, interacting with evaporite rocks, generates a wide range of ionic strength in the water catchment from 0.1 to 5.0 mol kg−1. We sampled 38 river sites and analysed the composition for the dissolved fraction filtered through 0.45 μm, the truly dissolved fraction obtained through ultrafiltration (10 kDa) and the relative included colloidal fraction. This study was focused on the recognition of Zr, Hf and REE behaviour under changing ionic strength conditions, since this is one of parameters responsible for colloid stability in natural waters. In turn, this phenomenon leads to REE release from the colloidal fraction and t…

Carbon nanotubes-based nanohybrids for multifunctional nanocomposites

2017

In the present work, nano-hybrids based on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) bearing immobilized, either through covalent linkage and physical absorption, commercial anti-oxidant molecules have been formulated and used as nanofillers in Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE), aiming at preparing multifunctional nanocomposites. The effective immobilization of the anti-oxidant molecules has been probed by spectroscopic and thermogravimetric analyses. The study of the morphology and the rheological behaviour of the nanocomposites show that the immobilization of anti-oxidant molecules onto the CNTs surface is beneficial for the state of the polymer/nanoparticles interfacial region. Additionall…

Tunable radical scavenging activity of carbonaceous structures and their anti-oxidant behaviour in polymer based nanocomposites

2017

Introduction: Carbon nanotubes (CNTs), due to their electronic properties, show radical scavenging activity toward the radical formed during the degradation processes of polymeric materials. In this work, we propose a novel strategy to control the CNTs anti-oxidant features through the application of an ultrasound treatment (us). Materials and Methods: Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE); multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs); CNTs have been sonicated at room temperature for different time intervals. Nanocomposites have been prepared though hot compaction and fully characterized. Results: The content of CNTs structural defects, evaluated through Raman-spectroscopy, increases wi…

Near-infrared light-responsive and antibacterial injectable hydrogels with antioxidant activity based on a Dopamine-functionalized Gellan Gum for wou…

2022

The development of wound dressings with combined antioxidant, antibacterial and tissue adhesion functions has been a difficult medical task for the treatment of wound infections. We synthetized a dopamine and PEG functionalized Gellan Gum (GG) to produce an injectable hydrogel with radical scavenging activity having both specific and aspecific antibiotic/antimicrobial properties. Using starting GG with different molecular weights, we obtained two derivatives that have been used to prepare the gel precursor dispersion, that undergoes gelation in the presence of colistin and dried microparticles (MPs) functionalized on the surface with polydopamine (pDA). Both were used to dope the hydrogel, …

Phase partitioning of aerosol particles in clouds at Kleiner Feldberg

1994

The partitioning of aerosol particles between cloud droplets and interstitial air by number and volume was determined both in terms of an integral value and as a function of size for clouds on Mt. Kleiner Feldberg (825 m asl), in the Taunus Mountains north-west of Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Differences in the integral values and the size dependent partitioning between two periods during the campaign were observed. Higher number and volume concentrations of aerosol particles in the accumulation mode were observed during Period II compared to Period I. In Period I on average 87 ± 11% (±one standard deviation) and 73 ± 7% of the accumulation mode volume and number were incorporated into cloud…

A theoretical study of the wet removal of atmospheric pollutants. Part I: the redistribution of aerosol particles captured through nucleation and imp…

1985

Abstract A theoretical model is formulated which allows the processes that control the wet deposition of atmospheric pollutants to be included in cloud dynamic models. The model considers the condensation process and the collision-coalescence process which, coupled together, control the fate of atmospheric aerosol particles removed by clouds and precipitation through nucleation scavenging and impaction scavenging. The model was tested by substituting a simple parcel model for the dynamic framework. In this form the model was used to determine the time evolution of the aerosol particle mass scavenged by drops as well as the aerosol particle mass left unactivated in air as “drop-interstitial”…

Antioxidant Activity and Release Kinetics of Caffeic and p-Coumaric Acids from Hydrocolloid-Based Active Films for Healthy Packaged Food

2017

International audience; Sustainable hydrocolloid-based films containing natural antioxidants, caffeic and p-coumaric acids at different concentrations of 0.5%, 1%, 5%, and 10% w/w of polymers, were designed for packing fatty foods. Antioxidant activities and kinetics for all film formulations were assessed using radical scavenging activity (DPPH), reducing power, and iron chelating ability. Release kinetics of the antioxidants from the films into a food simulant (96% ethanol) were analyzed. The intermolecular interactions between antioxidants and polymers chains were assessed by Fourier transform infrared attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR) and related to the film properties. Antioxidan…

Changes in the Phytochemical Profile and Antioxidant Properties of Prunus persica Fruits after the Application of a Commercial Biostimulant Based on …

2022

Plant biostimulants are formulations that are experiencing great success from the perspective of sustainable agriculture. In this work, we evaluated the effect derived from the application of a biostimulant based on algae and yeast extracts (Expando®) on the agronomic yield and nutraceutical profile of two different cultivars (“Sugar Time” and “West Rose”) of Prunus persica (peach). Although, at the agronomic level, significant effects on production yields were not recorded, the biostimulant was able to reduce the ripening time, increase the fruit size, and make the number of harvestable fruits homogeneous. From a nutraceutical point of view, our determinations v…
