Semàntica i pragmàtica, contingut i context
2019
Paraules clau : minimisme, contextualisme, relativisme, contingut explicit. Abstract: The aim of this paper is to summarize the main lines of the debate about the semantics-pragmatics divide. The three main contenders in the dispute are explained, and a general schema for fitting theories into each of the…
Research Directions of OLAP Personalizaton
2011
In this paper we have highlighted five existing approaches for introducing personalization in OLAP: preference constructors, dynamic personalization, visual OLAP, recommendations with user session analysis and recommendations with user profile analysis and have analyzed research papers within these directions. We have provided an evaluation in order to point out (i) personalization options, described in these approaches, and its applicability to OLAP schema elements, aggregate functions, OLAP operations, (ii) the type of constraints (hard, soft or other), used in each approach, (iii) the methods for obtaining user preferences and collecting user information. The goal of our paper is to syst…
OLAP Personalization with User-Describing Profiles
2010
In this paper we have highlighted five existing approaches for introducing personalization in OLAP: preference constructors, dynamic personalization, visual OLAP, recommendations with user session analysis and recommendations with user profile analysis and have analyzed research papers within these directions. We have pointed out applicability of personalization to OLAP schema elements in these approaches. The comparative analysis has been made in order to highlight a certain personalization approach. A new method has been proposed, which provides exhaustive description of interaction between user and data warehouse, using the concept of Zachman Framework [1, 2], according to which a set of…
Does Kaniso activate CASINO?: input coding schemes and phonology in visual-word recognition.
2010
Most recent input coding schemes in visual-word recognition assume that letter position coding is orthographic rather than phonological in nature (e.g., SOLAR, open-bigram, SERIOL, and overlap). This assumption has been drawn – in part – by the fact that the transposed-letter effect (e.g., caniso activates CASINO) seems to be (mostly) insensitive to phonological manipulations (e.g., Perea & Carreiras, 2006 , 2008 ; Perea & Pérez, 2009 ). However, one could argue that the lack of a phonological effect in prior research was due to the fact that the manipulation always occurred in internal letter positions – note that phonological effects tend to be stronger for the initial syllable (…

Adopting XML for Large-Scale Information
2011
This book has presented many different ways to encode information in XML format and the purposes for doing so. In this concluding chapter we consider problems related to managing XML information assets and the methods available to address those problems. Approaches for persistently storing XML data can be divided into file storage and database storage, and the research community has been especially active in designing new solutions for XML databases. However, adoption of XML often means massive migration procedures from some legacy data into the XML format; examples of migration cases are given. While describing the problems related to adopting XML, we give examples of the kinds of data fo…
Why Use XML?
2011
Since its inception a decade ago, XML has become a standard technology for software engineers, all Web browsers are able to parse and show XML documents, and huge XML data resources are available from the Internet. Many of the documents are in XHTML, but other XML applications are quite common as well. XML has also become a format that is increasingly common in the files of local disks. This success would not have been possible without collaborative efforts throughout the Web community. Such world-wide collaborative development has included standards, software applications, and case implementations that can serve as models when developing new solutions. In this chapter we consider what ki…
On the classification of Kim and Kostrikin manifolds
2006
International audience; We completely classify the topological and geometric structures of some series of closed connected orientable 3-manifolds introduced by Kim and Kostrikin in [20, 21] as quotient spaces of certain polyhedral 3-cells by pairwise identifications of their boundary faces. Then we study further classes of closed orientable 3-manifolds arising from similar polyhedral schemata, and describe their topological properties.
Semantic Mappings in Description Logics for Spatio-temporal Database Schema Integration
2005
International audience; The interoperability problem arises in heterogeneous systems where different data sources coexist and there is a need for meaningful information sharing. One of the most representive realms of diversity of data representation is the spatio-temporal domain. Spatio-temporal data are most often described according to multiple and greatly diverse perceptions or viewpoints, using different terms and with heterogeneous levels of detail. Reconciling this heterogeneity to build a fully integrated database is known to be a complex and currently unresolved problem, and few formal approaches exist for the integration of spatio-temporal databases. The paper discusses the interope…
